whytime is now easy to install on most Linux distributions. Packages, the install script and the container image all repackage the static release binary. The man pages have been rewritten by hand.

Install

curl -fsSL https://github.com/Arinerron/whytime/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
System Asset Install
Debian, Ubuntu whytime_0.1.2_amd64.deb, whytime_0.1.2_arm64.deb sudo apt install ./whytime_*.deb
Fedora, RHEL, openSUSE whytime-0.1.2-1.x86_64.rpm, whytime-0.1.2-1.aarch64.rpm sudo dnf install ./whytime-*.rpm
Alpine whytime_0.1.2_x86_64.apk, whytime_0.1.2_aarch64.apk sudo apk add --allow-untrusted ./whytime_*.apk
Arch whytime-0.1.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst, whytime-0.1.2-1-aarch64.pkg.tar.zst sudo pacman -U ./whytime-*.pkg.tar.zst, or AUR whytime-bin / whytime

You can also install with:

  • Nix: nix run github:Arinerron/whytime -- doctor
  • Container: docker run --rm --pid=host --cap-add BPF --cap-add PERFMON --cap-add SYS_PTRACE --cap-add SYSLOG ghcr.io/arinerron/whytime -p PID
  • Cargo: cargo binstall whytime (prebuilt binary) or cargo install --locked whytime (build from source)

Checksums for every package and for install.sh are in SHA256SUMS. Each tarball has its own .sha256 file.

No package grants capabilities automatically. Run whytime with sudo, or opt in once with sudo setcap cap_bpf,cap_perfmon+ep "$(command -v whytime)".

Added

  • An install script, .deb, .rpm, .apk and Arch packages for x86_64 and aarch64, the AUR packages whytime-bin and whytime, a Nix flake, the container image ghcr.io/arinerron/whytime and cargo-binstall metadata.

Changed

  • The man pages are written by hand. whytime(1) covers the report, every class, attach mode, trace files, flamegraphs, JSON output, privileges and exit status. whytime-report(1), whytime-doctor(1) (every check) and whytime-completions(1) are complete pages too. The option lists are still generated from the CLI.
  • The embedded BPF objects no longer contain the build directory.

Fixed

  • README links now resolve on crates.io.
