Fuselane 0.1.0-beta.14

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 11 Oct 20:22

Fuselane can now be updated from the command line. Beta.13 offers this update by itself: click Update and restart.

New

  • fuselane update: updates the Fuselane app to the newest version from a terminal, with the same signed download as Update and restart (over every network, checked against Fuselane's release key, then a restart). It opens the app first if it's closed, and your downloads pause and carry on afterwards. fuselane update --check only says whether there's a newer version.
  • brew upgrade --cask fuselane now updates Fuselane like any other app installed with Homebrew.

Fixed

  • One update at a time: starting an update from the window while the command line was also updating could run two installs at once. Now the second one follows the first one's progress.

The browser extension now takes every download, like IDM, with a live popup, and hand-offs to another computer start there at once. Beta.12 offers this update by itself: click Update and restart.

New

  • Every download from the browser: with the extension, downloads go to Fuselane as you click them. The browser never starts its own copy, and the window stays in the background; it only comes forward when there's something to choose, such as a video's quality.
  • A new extension popup: total speed with each network's share drawn as a lane, each download as a tile with its kind of file, percentage and speed, finished downloads under Done, and the page's video one tap away. The popup opens on Downloads when a download starts.
  • Without the app: the extension downloads small files by itself, and for big ones offers the app or the browser.
  • Hand-offs start on the other computer at once: it takes what's already downloaded from this computer and fetches the rest from the internet at the same time. While the other computer hasn't accepted, a loader says so; once it accepts, you land on the Send page and see it going.
  • Same link again: clicking a link that's already in Fuselane, paused or stopped, asks whether to resume it or download a new copy.
  • Cancelling asks first, in the app and in the extension.
  • Video pages are read as soon as the popup opens, and HD video comes as one item with its sound.

Fixed

  • Pause is instant: it used to wait for a stuck connection, the server's first answer or the checksum lookup, which could take 5 to 10 seconds. It now stops at once at any point.
  • Downloads start sooner: the checksum next to a file is looked up in every place at once (about 5 s faster on some servers).
  • Progress counts what was already downloaded after a resume, instead of starting from 0%.
  • The app and the extension show a download as running the moment it runs, with bytes as they arrive.
  • A download from the browser is selected in the app, instead of the old selection staying put.
  • Computers you trust show up in Send without switching to Everyone first.
  • Sending progress updates smoothly instead of jumping from 0 to halfway.
  • Links in open pages keep working after the extension is reloaded or updated.

macOS: asked once more, then never again

Fuselane is now signed with its own certificate. macOS asks one more time for access to the Downloads folder after this update, and then remembers it through future updates.

Browser extension 0.4.0

The extension has its own update, through the browser stores: the new popup, every download to Fuselane, downloading without the app, the "already in Fuselane" question and cancel that asks first.

@github-actions github-actions released this 11 Oct 07:05

The browser extension now works from Microsoft Edge's store, and Fuselane has a page that shows which of your browsers have it. Beta.11 offers this update by itself: click Update and restart.

Fixed

  • The extension from Microsoft Edge's store reaches the app: the Edge Add-ons copy of the extension has its own id, which Fuselane didn't accept, so Edge kept every download for itself and the extension said Fuselane wasn't installed. Update the app (the extension needs nothing) and Edge downloads come to Fuselane again.

  • Plain words when every network fails: a server that sends the wrong part of a file used to end with a technical dump ("BadResponse(Overrun …)"). It now says what happened, for example "the server sent bytes past the requested end". Disk problems are named the same way.

New

  • Extension page: a new Extension tab lists the browsers on this computer (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Chromium, Firefox) and, for each, whether the extension is connected, added, turned off or missing. Add to Edge (or Chrome, Firefox…) opens that browser at Fuselane's page in its store; Turn on opens its extensions page. Fuselane only reads the browsers' settings files, it never changes them.

  • Where browser downloads go: on the same page, choose Everything to Fuselane, Small files stay in the browser (up to 1 MB, 100 MB, 500 MB, 1, 2 or 3 GB), or Keep downloads in the browser. The extension follows it in every browser, and changing the switch in the extension changes it here too.

  • Add it on first launch: the welcome tour has a step for adding the extension, and Downloads shows a small banner until a browser has it (dismiss it with Not now).

  • Made by ClearCraft Labs: Fuselane's publisher is now ClearCraft Labs, shown in Windows' installed apps and in Settings → About.

Browser extension 0.3.0

The extension has its own update, through the browser stores:

  • A new look that matches the app, with a status chip (Connected, App closed or No app).
  • Without the app it offers it, with a link to fuselane.app/download; with the app closed, Open Fuselane starts it.
  • It tells the app which browser it's in, and follows the app's setting for where downloads go. A change you made while the app was closed, or before this version, is kept and sent to the app.
  • Firefox 140 or newer.

A real speed test with its own tab, live usage, a cleaner Networks page, and a window that always opens. Beta.10 offers this update by itself: click Update and restart.

New

  • Proxy passwords in your system's keychain: a proxy's password is now kept in the macOS Keychain, Windows Credential Manager or the Linux Secret Service, not in Fuselane's settings. Passwords saved by an earlier version move there by themselves. Where there's no keychain to use, the password stays in Fuselane's settings as before, and the proxy form says so. On macOS, after an update, the system may ask once whether Fuselane can use the saved password: choose Always Allow.

  • More Hindi: with हिन्दी chosen, messages from Fuselane's core now show in Hindi too: why a download failed and what to do, errors in the New download dialog and in Settings, proxy and network notes, and feed, folder, Nearby and update problems. Details that come straight from your system stay in English.

  • Speedtest, with its own tab: a live, colourful speedometer measures each network the way public speed tests do: several connections at once for a few seconds, leaving out the slow start, so the figures match what speed-test sites show (the old check under-counted, often by half). It now measures upload too, latency while the line is busy in both directions, and shows each network's internet provider and the test server's city, then every network together. It skips a network that has used its data allowance, and the data it uses counts toward the allowance.

  • Networks setup, redesigned: a live picture shows each network flowing into Fuselane, and each network gets one card with everything about it: when it helps and its hours, its speed limit, its monthly allowance with a ring, and its proxy.

  • Settings that save themselves: speed limits, the slow-mode speed and allowances save a moment after you stop typing (or on Enter), with a small tick; no more separate Save buttons.

  • Torrents get the live ring: a torrent's page now shows the same fusing ring, network speeds and live speed graph as a download.

  • Fuse Send links use fuselane.app: new links read https://fuselane.app/s#…. Links made earlier still open. A copy older than beta.11 doesn't recognise the new address when it's pasted in; clicking the link still opens it in Fuselane.

  • Usage, live: Networks → Usage shows this month's total and each network's share, what's moving right now with a live line per network, the last 30 days with today growing as you watch, and a card per network with its allowance. It no longer shows a blank page when there's no day-by-day history yet.

Fixed

  • Tabs stay put: the Nearby/Link and Setup/Usage tabs no longer jump sideways when you switch; they sit in the middle of the header.

  • Keyboard shortcuts list: Settings now lists ⌘4 for Send and ⌘5 for Speedtest.

  • Command line: fuselane get refuses a save folder that doesn't exist (or a file given as the folder) before saving anything, and a link over 8 KB, the same as the app.

  • Flatpak: the Flatpak build no longer offers its own updates (your software centre updates it), starts at login and keeps the computer awake through the desktop's portals, opens links and .torrent files in the copy already running without an extra permission, and says plainly that the browser extension and Sleep or Shut down when done need the .deb or AppImage for now.

  • Fuselane always opens a window: if Fuselane can't open its download list when it starts, it now opens a window that says why, instead of seeming to do nothing. When the list was saved by a newer Fuselane (say you ran a newer copy, then opened an older one), Update now downloads and installs the newer version right there, and your downloads are kept; if no update can be found, it links to fuselane.app. For any other problem (a folder Fuselane can't write to, a full disk) it shows what went wrong, with Open the folder and Copy details. This window comes with this version, so copies from before it still close without a word in that case. An older copy also no longer changes a newer copy's list while refusing it.

Built-in tools that usually need a separate app, all free and on your computer only. Beta.9 offers this update by itself: click Update and restart.

New

  • Videos from pages: paste a YouTube (or one of 1,000+ sites) link and choose Get the video from this page. Pick a quality, or Audio (MP3), and Fuselane downloads it over every network at once. Needs the free yt-dlp tool (and ffmpeg for HD and MP3); Fuselane never bundles them. In the browser, the extension's button does the same in one click.
  • Network check (Networks): each network's speed, delay, jitter, how it copes when busy (graded A+ to F) and name lookups, then every network together. Fuselane also notes every outage, and makes a dated report you can send your internet provider.
  • Data used (Networks): what each network carried this month, and a 30-day chart.
  • Hours per network: use a network only between set times, for example the phone from 23:00 to 06:00 on a night plan. Downloads move over by themselves when a window opens or closes. Before midnight sets 22:00 to 00:00, so a phone on a daily data pack helps with what's left of the day's data before it expires; if the pack runs out, Fuselane notices the slowdown and stops using it.
  • Text between your computers (Send): send what you copied to another computer. From a trusted one it lands straight on the clipboard. Works with LocalSend on phones too.
  • Folders: drop a folder on a device to send it as a folder, or keep a folder in sync with your other computer. New and changed files go across whenever both are on your network; nothing is deleted there, and there's no cloud.
  • Feeds (Downloads → Feeds): follow a podcast, a project's releases or any RSS or Atom feed. New files download by themselves, named after their titles, with words to include or skip. Torrents in a feed wait for you to open them, unless you tick Start torrents by themselves for that feed. The browser extension offers Follow this site's feed on pages that have one.
  • Phones without the app can send text: the phone page (Send → Show a code to scan) now takes text or a link and puts it on this computer's clipboard, and shows text you offer it to copy.
  • Remote control for aria2 apps (Settings → Other apps, off by default): AriaNg, the Aria2 browser extensions and phone remote apps can add downloads and watch them. A secret is needed on every call, and only this computer can connect unless you allow your network. With your network allowed, scan a code to control downloads from your phone's browser. AriaNg and the phone page update the moment a download starts, pauses or finishes.
  • Metalink: paste a .meta4 or .metalink link and Fuselane downloads the files it lists, each from all its mirrors at once, and checks every file against its SHA-256.
  • Add files from a folder (Settings → Files): a .torrent file, a Metalink or a .txt list of links put in a folder you pick starts by itself. Media tools that save .torrent files to a folder work with it.
  • A short welcome on the first launch: the networks Fuselane found, an optional check of how fast they are together (with a plain verdict), and where to start. Settings → About shows it again.
  • Hindi: Fuselane's screens now come in Hindi (हिन्दी). Settings → Look and feel → Language picks System, English or हिन्दी, and System follows your computer's language. Messages about a failed download stay in English for now.
  • The Networks page is now in three tabs: Setup, Check and Usage.
  • Throttled networks step aside: when a network slows to a crawl while the others keep going (a phone dropped to 64 kbps after its daily data, for example), Fuselane stops giving it work, hands its unfinished parts to the other networks, and says so on the download. It tries the network again every few minutes and lets it back in once it's fast. Slow servers and short dips don't count.
  • Proxy per network (Networks → Setup): give one network an HTTP or SOCKS5 proxy, with a username and password if it asks. Downloads on that network go through it, https stays encrypted end to end, and the proxy is checked as soon as you save it, so a wrong address or login shows right away. Torrents still connect directly.

Fixed

  • Name lookups through each network could wait 3 seconds on networks that drop a second query; they now ask again at once.
  • Settings no longer scrolls sideways in a narrow window.
  • A download no longer fails when the server drops the very first connection: Fuselane asks again a few times first.
  • On Linux, Fuselane is now offered for magnet links, as on macOS and Windows (it never takes them over).

Ten new ways to download smarter, a redesigned Send page, and a way to tell us when something breaks. Beta.8 offers this update by itself: click Update and restart.

New

  • Do this now: give one download every network. The others wait and carry on by themselves after it.
  • Groups: links added together stay together as one row, with one progress bar, Pause all / Resume all, and one notice when everything is done. Rename or ungroup any time.
  • Find files on a page: paste a downloads page, pick its files by type, and get them as a group.
  • Ready by: give a download a time it should be finished. It goes first, runs outside your schedule if it has to, and says whether it's on track.
  • The phone only for long downloads: in Networks, choose Always, Long downloads or Never for each network. Short downloads leave your phone's data alone; long ones bring it in and carry on where they were.
  • What each network saved: after a download, see how long it would have taken without each network ("Without iPhone USB: about 6 min").
  • Checked by themselves: when a site publishes a SHA-256 next to the file (.sha256, SHA256SUMS), Fuselane finds it and verifies the finished file. It says Verified.
  • Already downloaded: New download tells you when the same file is already on your computer.
  • Continue on another computer: send a paused download, with everything downloaded so far, to another computer with Fuselane on your network. It carries on there.
  • Low battery: choose to keep going, leave out the phone, or pause until you plug in (Settings).
  • Send page, redesigned: this computer in the middle and devices around it. Drop files on a device to send them; watch them travel. The receiver can now cancel too, and the four check words are gone (devices are verified by their keys).
  • Report a problem (Settings): opens a bug report with the diagnostics filled in, for you to read and send. If Fuselane ever closes unexpectedly, it offers to report it next time. Nothing is ever sent by itself.

Better

  • Networks and Settings use wide windows; settings are grouped.
  • Smoother motion across the app, and quick clicks right after switching screens are never lost.

Send to computers and phones nearby without a link, plus the fixes you asked for. Beta.7 offers this update by itself: click Update and restart (this time it's the last update without a progress bar).

Fixed

  • Speeds add up: a torrent's big number is now the sum of its networks, shown underneath (Wi-Fi 5.4 + Ethernet 6.4…). The sidebar total says it counts all downloads together.
  • Remove asks and waits: Remove opens a dialog that stays until you choose Cancel, Keep files or Move files to Trash. Torrent files now go to the Trash instead of being deleted outright.
  • No scrollbar in the link box: one link is one line; a pasted magnet becomes a card with its name and a Change button.
  • Updates show their size and progress, with a bar, megabytes, speed and time left. Fuselane downloads them over all your networks, checks the signature, and offers Try again if something goes wrong.

New

  • Nearby: on the Send page, computers and phones on your network appear by themselves. Pick one and send. A new device shows four words on both screens to check first; trust it and its files arrive without asking. Works with the free LocalSend app on phones, and a phone without any app can scan a code and send or receive in its browser.
  • Torrent files: give each file High, Normal, Low or Skip, see how much of each has arrived, and Play a video or song while it downloads.
  • Mirrors: add other links to the same file under More options; each is checked to be the very same file, then every network downloads from all of them.
  • Start at a set time: under More options, choose when a download starts. It waits in your list and starts by itself.
  • When a name is taken: Fuselane asks whether to keep both or replace the old file (or set a default in Settings).
  • When a download finishes: open it, or unpack zip and tar archives, by itself (Settings).
  • Filter by type in your list: video, music, archives, apps and more.

Torrents show who you're downloading from, and the app feels more alive. Beta.6 offers this update by itself: click Update and restart.

New

  • Peers: a torrent's new Peers tab lists who you're downloading from, with the app they use, their address, which of your networks carries them, and the speed both ways.
  • Pieces strip: a slim bar shows which parts of a torrent have arrived; parts that just landed flash briefly.
  • Tabs on the torrent screen: Networks, Peers and Files, so the screen shows one thing at a time.
  • Smoother: speeds glide between updates instead of jumping, new rows rise in gently and buttons respond to a press. Animations rest while the window is hidden, and everything stays still if your system is set to reduce motion.

The fifth beta: Fuse Send, links that redirect, and a long list of download-manager features. Beta.4 offers this update by itself: click Update and restart.

New

  • Fuse Send: send a file of any size straight from your computer. Open Send, pick a file and copy the link; the other person opens it and their Fuselane receives it, encrypted on the way and checked when it lands. No upload, no account, no size limit. On the same network it connects straight away; across the internet it works over IPv6, or when the sender's router has UPnP on. Shares come back after a restart with the same link, and can stop by themselves after one full copy is sent.
  • A speed limit per download, changeable while it runs.
  • Download later: add links without starting them.
  • Failed downloads try again by themselves when the reason may pass (a dropped network, a busy server), and at once when a network comes back.
  • Export and import your download list as a text file.
  • Catch copied download links (Settings, off by default): copy a link to a file and Fuselane offers to download it.
  • Move to Trash for finished files.
  • Links with a login in them (https://user:password@site/file) work; the password is hidden in the window.
  • Pasting or dropping a Fuse Send link anywhere opens it on the Send page; the share page's Open in Fuselane button opens the app.

Fixed

  • Links that redirect (GitHub release files, mirrors, signed download links) failed with "status 302". They're followed now, and your cookies and logins never follow to another site.
  • Pausing a torrent while it was still checking could be lost, and it downloaded anyway.
