Planting Seedlings

Planting the Seedlings

Our first round of seedlings we sowed was Bok choy (also known as Pak Choi). To start the seedlings we put 2-3 seeds in each hole of the rock wool. We planted almost double the number we needed so we could select the strongest. One the rockwool is full of seed we placed in in a tray and poured enough water to make the wool completely damp and have about an eight of an inch of water in the bottom of the tray. These seedlings will sit in this tray until they begin to show true leaves and then we will transition them to hydroponics setup. We have a heat mat underneath of the tray in case we notice the temperature dropping to low. At this stage the seeds do not need light and as such we do not have the grow lamp turned on.

Once the Seedlings show there first set of true leaves they are ready to be transitioned into the system. This is as simply as breaking apart the rockwool bricks and placing one in each slot in the system. Once the plants are in the hydroponics system you may need to monitor the lighting and adjust it as young plants may need more or less light depending on how intense the lighting is.

Replenishing the system

The system can be used for constant harvest or one large harvest. Currently the Bok Choy is all going to be harvested at once since it was all planted at the same time. If you want consistent harvests simply stager your seedling planting and time it so that as you pull out plants you can insert new seedlings to take their place. this could be done on a roughly 4 week cycle dependent on the growth rate of your chosen crop.

Follow up crop

For the first grow cycle we chose Bok choy, this however will be replaced with a lettuce variety and in turn basil. In the future I would like to see a constant harvest style growing system where each week we can pull fresh produce from the system.
