This is a prerelease.

Beta 2 fixes opening VRML97 and X3D worlds through macOS Finder and LaunchServices.

Beta 1 could launch and render worlds when the executable received the path directly, but Finder double-click and open -a FreeWRL <world> could reject the document. Beta 2 fixes both required parts:

  • Correct bare CFBundleTypeExtensions for macOS document routing
  • application:openURLs: handling that passes routed files to FreeWRL's loader

Supported routed extensions: .wrl, .wrz, .wrlz, .x3d, .x3dz, .x3dv, .x3dvz

The final release artifact independently passed LaunchServices 7/7 through the actual macOS document-open path.

The packaged app does not require Homebrew runtime libraries, Imlib2, OpenAL Soft, or FFmpeg.

The app is Developer ID signed, hardened-runtime enabled, Apple notarized, stapled, and Gatekeeper accepted.

This prerelease does not claim complete X3D feature coverage. Intel and macOS 13 are not supported.

FreeWRL for Mac Silicon Revival — macOS Beta 1

This is the first public Apple Silicon beta from the Ascendance Open Worlds
FreeWRL modernization fork.

Platform

  • Apple Silicon arm64
  • macOS 14 Sonoma or newer
  • OpenGL 4.1 Core
  • FreeWRL 6.7 engine line

Distribution

  • Self-contained FreeWRL.app
  • Developer ID signed
  • Hardened runtime enabled
  • Apple notarized
  • Notarization ticket stapled

  • No Homebrew runtime required

macOS runtime dependencies

The application package contains the required non-system libraries built from
pinned source:

  • FreeType 2.14.3
  • ODE 0.16.6, double precision, internal libccd
  • freealut 1.1.0

Audio uses Apple's OpenAL framework.

The macOS build does not require:

  • Imlib2
  • OpenAL Soft
  • FFmpeg
  • Homebrew

Textures

The macOS build uses stb_image 2.27.

Supported target formats include:

  • JPEG
  • PNG
  • GIF, first frame
  • BMP
  • TGA
  • PSD
  • HDR
  • PNM

TIFF and WebP are not supported by the current macOS decoder.

Beta status

This is a prerelease for testing.
