About

Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) provides persistent block storage for Amazon EC2 instances.

  • Storage persists independently of an EC2 instance
  • Volumes can be attached to and detached from instances
  • Supports encryption using AWS KMS
  • Supports point-in-time backups using EBS snapshots
  • Designed for workloads such as databases, file systems, and applications

Volume types

  • gp3 / gp2 — General Purpose SSD
  • io2 — Provisioned IOPS SSD for high-performance workloads
  • st1 — Throughput Optimized HDD
  • sc1 — Cold HDD

Snapshots

  • Point-in-time backups of EBS volumes
  • Stored and managed by AWS
  • Incremental after the first snapshot
  • Can be used to create new volumes or Amazon Machine Image
