Firstly, Villagers now have a "Happiness" stat, which is a numeric value dependent on their relationship to the interacting player and their environment. If they're happy, they give you discounts. If they're unhappy, they don't wanna trade with you at all!
They get happiness from varying sources:
- Free space
If a Villager has insufficient free area to move around in, they get extremely unhappy. Trapping a Villager alone is enough to make them want to stop trading with you. - Light
Villagers don't want to be left in the dark! - Company
Villagers don't want to be completely alone nor be overcrowded! If a Villager has at least 5 other Villagers in a 64-block radius they consider themselves in good company, but if these 5 Villagers are in an 8-block radius they consider themselves overcrowded! - Safety
If a villager feels actively threatened by a Zombie or Player, they aren't as happy! - Health
If a villager is fully healed, they're happy! - Job Security
If a villager has traded recently, they're happy! If they haven't traded in a long time, they get anxious! - Trust
If the Player has not recently harmed the Villager, they trust the player won't harm them. There is a grace period if you accidentally punch a Villager, too. - Reputation and Renown
If you have a good relationship to the Villager and the village as a whole, they're happy! - Luxury
Villagers want a nice environment, which is decided based on what blocks and entities are in their surroundings! They want at least 5 of the following things in their surroundings to consider themselves in a nice area:
-
- Painting
-
- Item Frames
-
- Armor Stands
-
- Animals (Wolves, Cats, Parrots, Cows, Pigs, Chickens, Sheep, Horses, Donkeys, Llamas, Camels, Rabbits, Sniffers, Bees)
-
- Iron Golems
-
- Lanterns (Soul or regular)
-
- Bookshelves
-
- Amethyst (Block or cluster)
-
- Anvils
-
- Enchanting Tables
-
- Chests (Ender- or regular)
-
- Flower Pots
-
- Furnaces
-
- Beacons
-
- Jukeboxes
-
- Crafting Tables
-
- Cakes
-
- Campfires (Soul- or regular)
Maxing out a Villager's happiness stat for the first time boosts your renown by 1!
Renown is effectively your relationship or "fame" to the village at large. I use the term "village" loosely here. Renown is effectively the same as reputation, except it affects all villagers in a large radius. You don't need a literal naturally generated village to gather renown.
It is represented as a number from -100 to 100 (-100 being bad).
Renown is increased by:
- Winning raids (+20)
- Curing Zombie Villagers (+5) (the first time per Villager)
- Maxing out a Villager's happiness (+1) (the first time per Villager)
Renown is lost by:
- Hurting or killing Villagers (-50) (INCLUDES INDIRECT! (e.g. through lava or cacti) For hurting Villagers, this has the same aforementioned grace period if you do so accidentally)
- Killing Iron Golems (-25) (Does not include indirect... It used to, but too many players had Iron Golem farms already and so I decided to turn this off)
Reputation is your relationship with an individual Villager.
Like renown, expressed as a number from -100 to 100 (-100 being bad)
Reputation is increased by:
- Trading (+0.5 per trade)
- Curing as Zombie Villager (+70) (first time only)
Reputation is lost by:
- Hurting or killing Villagers (-50) (Including indirectly, same grace period etc.)
- Killing Iron Golems (-15) (Excluding indirectly)
Villagers now have completely customizable trade options through /val merchants. You may define one or several merchant "types" per Villager profession. You can give these types a weight rarity, after which a Villager, when they get a profession, a random one is picked from it. When the Villager is traded with, this type is fixed on them and they can no longer lose it (aside from admin commands).
Trades may be made exclusive, requiring to be unlocked to be accessed!
This also means you can define a merchant type with weight 0, causing it to not appear naturally. You can then use admin commands to create these unique Villagers at specific places!
Villagers may now be given Services, which effectively allows you to make "recipes" taking in some item input and modifying it at a cost. By default, this is used in a simple way to allow armorsmiths to repair Player armor, or for librarians to allow them to enchant your gear!
Villagers may have stuff ordered from them. This is effectively a way for players to trade the specific items they're looking for, it just takes some time for these items to be delivered. The possible items to order are selected from the merchant type's available trades, if "orderable" is enabled on them.
Villagers may train the Player's skills at a price, increasing based on the amount of experience the Player would be buying.
