How to change the graphic elements

Editing the graphic aspect of the already existing elements in the game is in essence a straightforward process. The user could decide to replace the files with others crafted to their desire. However there are some things that the designer must take into consideration for doing this changes depending on the element to be modified.

Changing the pictures of the levels

If you want only to change the pictures of each level, the easiest way is to let the same size and format of each picture but change the design. The path of each picture are showed a below:

###Level 1

Background: assets/backgrounds/kitchenLevel.png'

Elements:

assets/sprites/Cu.png
assets/sprites/Zn.png
assets/sprites/Na.png
assets/sprites/Cl.png
assets/sprites/C.png
assets/sprites/H.png
assets/sprites/O.png

Crystals:

assets/sprites/salt_crystal.png
assets/sprites/ice.png
assets/sprites/sugar_crystal.png

###Level 2 Background: assets/backgrounds/beachLevel.png

Elements:

assets/sprites/O.png
assets/sprites/Al.png
assets/sprites/Cr.png
assets/sprites/Si.png
assets/sprites/Ti.png
assets/sprites/Zn.png

Crystals:

assets/sprites/VioletPower.png
assets/sprites/sapphire.png
assets/sprites/ruby.png
assets/sprites/quartz_crystal.png

###Level 3 Background: assets/backgrounds/forgeLevel.png

Elements:

assets/sprites/Cu.png
assets/sprites/Zn.png
assets/sprites/Fe.png
assets/sprites/C.png
assets/sprites/Au.png
assets/sprites/Al.png

Crystals:

assets/sprites/brass.png
assets/sprites/steel.png
assets/sprites/gold.png
assets/sprites/aluminium.png

Changing the bars

Affected files:

assets/bar.png
assets/preload.png

Ressources:

None

This bars are used for loading the game, and separating some elements in the Graphical Interface. There is not much to say about the bars, is a matter of replacing them, we suggest a size of 300 x20 for keeping the scale.

##About page

Affected files:

assets/Home/about_XX.png

Ressources:

None

This is an image with the information of the team who developed the game, and the why. We suggest adding more information about the client and official logos.

##Editing the text buttons

Type 1: One frame Buttons

Affected files:

assets/Home/en/… All files
assets/Home/fr/… All files
assets/Home/Title.png

Ressources:

HexagonButton.xcf

This buttons are only used in the title screen an have a size of 400x100.

Type 2: Multi framed buttons This buttons have animation in the event of clicking. We suggest not changing the default size of the elements for this animations are setted in code.

2-frames 593x81

3-frames 1182x80

Affected files:

assets/buttons/en/… Some buttons

Ressources:

None

Modifying the graphical buttons

Affected files:

assets/buttons/en/… Some buttons

Most of this buttons do not have animation and it’s recommended size is 100x100. However, the one for sound has two states for showing the no-sound state also. In this case each frame is of size 100x100.

Affected files:

assets/Home/XX… Flags by languages

We recommend a 45x13 size for the icons of the languages.

Changing the Panels

Affected files:

assets/panels…

Each element in the Graphical interface has a background called “panel”. Although in our version they are the same, they are independent and can be modified to improve the UI.

However, the welcomeLvlX files show the goal of an specific level and need to have a transparent background (or it is at least suggested). This have also the crystals that can be used in the lvl.

##Modifying the tutorials

Affected files:

assets/tutoriel/TutoXX…

The tutorial images are a set of popup images that are displayed when the player starts the game for the first time. It shows the basic concepts of how to play.

Replacing this images is easy, the only thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the goal in each of this screen. It needs to be kept in the same files and order for this images are coded into the programming side of the game.

Replacing the atoms

Affected files:

assets/sprites/

Resources:

icon_template.xcf

This icons represent the chemical elements that appear in the game. This icons have a metallic frame and a colored center. Our version of this icons also have a text field to show what element it is.

We provide a template for adding the frame. We suggest a size of 100x100 but the game will scale any size.

Replacing the crystals

Affected files:

assets/sprites/

Resources:

None

This icons represent the crystals that can be made using the chemical grid. In our implementation, this icons were not made by us so we suggest a replacing of all of this icons.

##Improving the animations

Affected files:

assets/sprites/BlueExplosion.png
assets/sprites/RedExplosion.png

Our battery of animation is done using sprite-sheets where each frame has a size of 120*120. The BlueExplosion file implements the animation for the destruction of atoms and the other one for the powers. We suggest modifying this file and keeping the same amount of frames.

##The Chemical Grids

Affected files:

assets/sprites/Grille_2.png
assets/sprites/Grille_Mistake.png

Resources:

Grille_1

This grid is used to place the atoms and aligning them in specific ways to “forge” crystals. Grille_2 is the grid that appears by default and the other one appears on screen when the user makes a mistake. Our design choice was blue for normal and red for mistake. Is intuitive.

##Creating new recipes

Affected files:

assets/buttons/XX/...

Resources:

RecipePattern.xcf

The idea behind these recipes is to have a place in-game to look the different arrangements that can be made to create crystals. This recipes in text can be looked in the file crystals.txt.

##Backgrounds

There are two types of backgrounds:

a. Simple ones that has the size of the window:

backgrounds/splash.png
backgrounds/win.png
backgrounds/lost.png

b. Doubles, that are larger because they can be moved in the window. Level backgrounds are larger than the other ones. It’s important to keep the scale between the height and the width.

Other than that, changing this images is a question of replacing files or editing them. No resources are provided.
