Component Required? Download
Gen1Recomp Android Test host Required gen1recomp-android-0.1.72-kanto.4.apk
Kanto Gear Required Kanto-Gear-Mod-1.3.0.zip
Dramatic Shape Android performance fork Optional DRAMATIC_SHAPE-1.6.0-android.2.zip

The official Gen1Recomp Android release does not yet contain the complete dual-display host support used here, so the linked host fork is currently required. Kanto Gear works without Voxel; the Voxel fork is only the optional tested 3D renderer.

What changed

  • Consolidated Kanto Gear's options into five clear settings: Theme, Info, Area Map, Gear Screen and Battle View. Existing saved choices are migrated rather than discarded.
  • Fixed D-pad and joystick navigation in the four-move companion layout so vertical input follows the visible column instead of forcing a detour through another move.
  • Moved Kanto Gear onto the host's explicit companion-display and render-composition interfaces instead of relying on an incidental render hook.
  • The required 0.1.72 host adds Retroid Pocket 5 Dual Screen Add-on routing, safer focus/input handling, hotplug and standby recovery, non-blocking diagnostics, and the AYN Thor hardware screen-toggle guard.
  • The optional Voxel 1.6.0-android.2 package removes the translucent empty HP-panel backings seen with Stadium battles after those panels move to Kanto Gear.

Tested

The complete set was tested on an AYN Thor running Android 13, including screen off/on, standby/resume, display recovery, map and door transitions, battles, party/status ownership, move navigation, restart persistence, and the optional Stadium path. Retroid Pocket 5 support was community-tested with Retroid's USB-C Dual Screen Add-on. GammaOS devices remain unverified, so reports are welcome.

Special thanks to @Rocky5150 for patiently testing the Retroid Pocket 5 dual-screen support, collecting detailed diagnostics, and working with us for more than 24 hours to identify and verify the Android display-routing fixes.

Updating

Install the APK over the existing Gen1Recomp Android Test app; do not uninstall first. Then import the new Kanto Gear ZIP through MODS ? Import mod .zip. Replace the Voxel package only if you use it.

This remains an unofficial Android public test release. Keep an exported save backup. No ROM, ROM-extracted asset or game data is included.

Kanto Gear 1.2.0 — Android public test

@AverageConsumer AverageConsumer released this 04 Aug 22:28

What changed

  • Added visible left/right header controls as an alternative to swiping.
  • Made horizontal navigation consistent: Guide and Area subpages are traversed
before the carousel continues to the next main section.
  • Added a player-centred 2x zoom toggle to the optional local map.
  • Fixed battle screen ownership when opening a Pokémon's stats from the party
menu, preventing a blank top screen with FOLLOW TOP below.
  • Improved ownership handling for move-learning and other transient battle
    prompts.

Required release set

  1. gen1recomp-android-0.1.69-kanto.3.apk — required Android test host.
  2. Kanto-Gear-Mod-1.2.0.zip — required Kanto Gear mod.
  3. DRAMATIC_SHAPE-1.6.0-android.1.zip — optional but recommended Android
renderer for the complete tested 3D setup.

Install newer versions over the existing app/mods. Keep an exported save
backup while this remains public test software. No ROM or game data is
included.

Kanto Gear 1.1.0 — Android public test

Kanto Gear 1.1.0 — Android public test

Kanto Gear turns a supported Android dual-display handheld into a Gen 1
companion: the game stays on the main display while maps, party information,
battles, menus and contextual touch controls move to the second display.

This is an unofficial public test verified on an AYN Thor running Android 13.
Comparable Android dual-display devices are welcome to test it, but are not
yet claimed as verified. No ROM or game data is included.

Complete tested setup

For the complete tested Android experience, use all three matching releases:

  1. Gen1Recomp Android test 0.1.64-kanto.2 — required host APK
  2. Kanto Gear 1.1.0 — required second-screen mod
  3. Dramatic Shape 1.5.4-android.2 — recommended Android 3D renderer

Kanto Gear can run without the Voxel fork, but that is not the full visual and
performance setup tested together on the Thor. Do not mix versions from
different release sets.

Install or update

  1. Install gen1recomp-android-0.1.64-kanto.2.apk from the
    Gen1Recomp Android test fork.
Install it over the existing test app; do not uninstall first.
  2. Download Kanto-Gear-Mod-1.1.0.zip and import it from the host's MODS tab.
  3. Optionally import DRAMATIC_SHAPE-1.5.4-android.2.zip from the
    Voxel performance fork.

The host uses the same package ID and signing key as 1.0.0, so Android updates
preserve its app data. Exporting a save backup is still recommended for public
test software.

Changelog since 1.0.0

Added

  • local area map built from the real map tiles, with optional exits and uncollected items
  • party EXP bars, summaries and safe touch reordering outside battles
  • optional full lower-screen battle HUD and caught-Pokemon markers

Improved

  • battle party controls now follow the screen that owns the battle UI
  • battle overlays and vertical dialogue choices render on the lower screen when appropriate
  • touch text, choice and Pokemon naming flows are safer and more consistent
  • the clock follows Android's 12/24-hour format

Fixed

  • losing the optional Oak Lab rival battle now counts as a completed loss
  • accented é renders correctly in lower-screen text
  • collected items disappear from the enhanced local map immediately
  • second-display hotplug recovery and external-display targeting remain intact

Tested release set

  • Gen1Recomp Android test: 0.1.64-kanto.2
  • Kanto Gear: 1.1.0
  • Dramatic Shape Android performance fork: 1.5.4-android.2 (optional)

Known limits

  • AYN Thor Android 13 remains the confirmed reference device.
  • The Voxel performance fork is Android-only; PC users should use the official
    Dramatic Shape release.
  • Automatic fork updates are disabled intentionally. Install later releases
manually over the existing app and import newer mod ZIPs from these repos.

Please report fork problems to the matching AverageConsumer repository, not to
the upstream projects unless the issue also reproduces on their official build.

@AverageConsumer AverageConsumer released this 03 Aug 10:32

Kanto Gear 1.0.0 — public hardware test

Kanto Gear puts a Gen 1 companion on a supported second Android display while
the normal game stays on the main display.

This first Android public build is verified on an AYN Thor running Android 13.
It is intended for comparable Android dual-screen handhelds, but their display
behavior and performance still need community testing. It is not an official
Gen1Recomp release.

Install

  1. Install gen1recomp-0.1.60-kanto-gear-android-test.apk from the
    Gen1Recomp Android test fork.
  2. Download the attached Kanto-Gear-Mod-1.0.0.zip and import it from the
    host's MODS tab.
  3. Optionally import DRAMATIC_SHAPE-1.5.2-android.1.zip from the
    Voxel performance fork.

This Kanto Gear release contains only the mod ZIP and its checksum. The host
APK and optional Voxel Mod remain in the repositories that own them.

Your own supported Pokemon Red, Blue or Yellow ROM is required. No ROM or
ROM-extracted game data is included.

Future host APKs use the same package ID and signing key. Install them over the
existing Android test app to keep its ROM cache, saves and settings; do not
uninstall it when updating. An exported save backup is still recommended.

Tested set

  • Gen1Recomp Android test: 0.1.60 for Kanto Gear 1.0.0
  • Kanto Gear: 1.0.0
  • Dramatic Shape Android performance fork: 1.5.2-android.1 (optional)

Highlights

  • live Kanto map, party, steps, field tools, guide and area pages
  • touch-driven battles, dialogue choices, move learning and PC lists
  • automatic recovery when the second display disappears on the tested Thor
  • handheld, external-screen and automatic display targeting
  • optional purist and enhanced assistance profiles

Known limits

  • AYN Thor Android 13 is the confirmed reference device. Comparable Android
dual-display hardware is expected to work but is not yet confirmed.
  • The optional Voxel performance fork is an Android-only companion release. It
is promising on the Thor but is not claimed to improve every device. PC users
should use the official Dramatic Shape release.
  • Fancy Voxel water with V-CURVE may fall back to normal animated tiles on the
    Thor's Adreno GPU.

Please report fork problems to the matching AverageConsumer repository, not to
the upstream projects unless the problem also reproduces on their official
release.
