Cairn 0.1.0 — First preview

Choose a tag to compare

@Ayoub-EDAHLOULI Ayoub-EDAHLOULI released this 03 Oct 13:07

The first public preview of Cairn: an offline, keyboard-first launcher for your commands, scripts and snippets, each saved with the reason it exists.

Press Alt + Space, type what you remember ("start the database"), and Cairn finds the exact command (Start-Service postgresql-x64-18).

✨ What's in this version

  • Instant launcher on Alt + Space (falls back to Ctrl + Shift + Space if taken), with a tray icon
  • Search by intent: title, content, tags and your why searched together, results on every keystroke
  • Filters: chips (Tab), > for commands only, #tag for an exact tag
  • Copy (Enter), paste into the window you came from (Ctrl + Enter), run in PowerShell or cmd (Ctrl + R, press twice)
  • Create and edit entries (Ctrl + N / Ctrl + E); drafts survive hiding the window
  • Action panel (Ctrl + K) listing every action with its shortcut
  • Settings (Ctrl + ,): System / Light / Dark theme and four accent colors
  • Fully offline: no account, no network, no telemetry; one SQLite file on your machine

📥 Install

  1. Download Cairn_0.1.0_x64-setup.exe below (recommended), or the .msi.
  2. Run it. Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info → Run anyway. This preview isn't code-signed yet.
  3. Press Alt + Space. 🎉

Requires Windows 10 or 11 with WebView2 (already included in up-to-date Windows). The .exe installs for your user only, no administrator rights needed.

⚠️ Known limitations

  • Windows only for now
  • No typo tolerance yet (postgers won't find postgres), coming next
  • Run in terminal supports PowerShell and cmd; entries with {{placeholders}} can't be run or filled yet
  • Doesn't start with Windows automatically yet (see the user guide for a one-minute workaround)
  • Pasting into apps running as administrator doesn't work (a Windows security rule); the content is still on your clipboard

Your data lives in %LOCALAPPDATA%\com.ayoubedahlouli.cairn\cairn.db, and updating Cairn keeps it.
