60. Subnet Migration

Subnet Migration in OCI (Simple Explanation) Subnet Migration is the process of moving resources (servers, databases, applications, load balancers, etc.) from one subnet to another subnet within the same VCN or to a different network design.

Think of a subnet as a separate room inside a building. If the room becomes too small, has security issues, or a new design is needed, we move the people and equipment to a new room. That movement is called subnet migration.

Why Subnet Migration is Required IP Address Exhaustion Existing subnet is running out of available IP addresses. A larger subnet is created and resources are migrated. Network Redesign Organization wants a better network architecture. Separate application, database, and web servers into different subnets. Security Improvement Move resources from a public subnet to a private subnet. Apply stricter Security Lists or NSGs. Environment Segregation Separate Development, Testing, and Production environments. Compliance Requirements Meet company or regulatory security standards. Main Activities in Subnet Migration Analyze Existing Environment Before migration, review:

Current subnet CIDR range Resources attached to the subnet Route Tables Security Lists NSGs Internet Gateway/NAT Gateway connections Create Target Subnet A new subnet is created with:

New CIDR block Required route rules Security policies Gateway configurations Validate Connectivity Ensure the new subnet can communicate with:

Application servers Databases Load balancers External systems Move Resources Resources are migrated to the new subnet.

Examples:

Compute instances Load balancers Application components Database-related resources Update Network Configuration Update:

Route tables Security lists NSGs DNS entries (if required) Testing Verify:

Application accessibility Server connectivity Database communication Internet access (if applicable) Decommission Old Subnet Once validation is successful:

Remove unused resources. Retire old subnet configuration. Benefits of Subnet Migration ✅ Better network organization

✅ Improved security

✅ Efficient IP address management

✅ Easier maintenance and troubleshooting

✅ Support for future growth

Interview/Lab Style Answer "Subnet migration in OCI is the process of moving network resources from one subnet to another subnet to improve security, optimize IP utilization, or redesign the network architecture. During migration, network configurations such as route tables, security lists, NSGs, and gateway access are reviewed and updated. After moving the resources, connectivity testing is performed to ensure applications and services function correctly before decommissioning the old subnet."
