Redstone Signal Output

The Animal Pen, Aquariums and Aviary can output a redstone signal to indicate their current state. The signal strength acts as a compact status value, where different bits represent different available interactions.

Signal States

Signal Strength Binary Animal Present Can Feed First Interaction Second Interaction
0 0000 ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌
1 0001 ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌
3 0011 ✅ ✅ ❌ ❌
5 0101 ✅ ❌ ✅ ❌
7 0111 ✅ ✅ ✅ ❌
9 1001 ✅ ❌ ❌ ✅

How the Signal Works

Each bit in the redstone signal represents a different state:

Binary Value Meaning
0001 1 Animal(s) are present
0010 2 The animals can currently be fed
0100 4 The first interaction is available
1000 8 The second interaction is available

The final redstone signal strength is created by combining all currently active states.

For example:

  • 0011 = 3 → Animals are present and can be fed.
  • 0101 = 5 → Animals are present, and the first interaction is available.
  • 0111 = 7 → Animals are present, can be fed, and the first interaction is available.
  • 1001 = 9 → Animals are present and the second interaction is available.
  • 1111 = 15 → Animals are present, can be fed, and both interactions are available.

First Interaction

The first interaction represents an additional action that can be performed on the animals. Depending on the animal, this may include:

  • 🥚 Chickens and Turtles — Use a bucket to collect eggs.
  • 🌱 Sniffers — Use a bowl to collect seeds.
  • 🟢 Frogs — Can drop Frog Lights when fed a Magma Cube.
  • ✂️ Sheep — Can be sheared for wool.
  • 🖌️ Armadillos — Can be brushed to collect scutes.
  • 🐝 Bees — Can be sheared to collect wax or interacted with using a bottle to collect honey.

Second Interaction

Some animals may support an additional, separate interaction.

Currently:

  • 🥚 Sniffers — Use a bucket to collect eggs.

Example Automation

You can use comparators or other redstone logic to detect specific states of the Animal Pen.

For example:

  • A signal of 3 means the pen contains animals that are ready to be fed.
  • A signal of 5 means animals are present and the first interaction is available.
  • A signal of 9 means animals are present and only the second interaction is currently available.
  • A signal of 15 means everything is available: animals are present, they can be fed, and both interactions can be performed.

This allows the Animal Pen to be integrated into automated redstone systems and used as a status output for different animal-related actions.
