SleepManager 0.6.1

SleepManager 0.6.1 focuses on smarter sleep controls, broader clamshell support and improved reliability.

What's New

Battery Saver During Sleep

SleepManager can now enable Android Battery Saver while the device sleeps on supported devices, then restore the previous state when the device wakes.

If Battery Saver was already enabled before sleep, SleepManager leaves it unchanged.

Battery Saver is applied only after any required pre-sleep sync and app shutdown work has finished.

Better Clamshell Support

SleepManager's closed-lid features are no longer limited to the AYN Thor-specific lid path.

0.6.1 adds support for compatible Android clamshell handhelds that expose a standard lid sensor, while keeping full support for the AYN Thor.

Available features can include:

  • Closed-Lid Protection — returns the device to sleep after an accidental wake while the lid is still closed.
  • Sleep When External Display Disconnects — puts the device to sleep when a docked display is disconnected with the lid closed.
  • Power Button Sleeps With Lid Closed — allows the Power button to return the device to sleep while the lid remains closed.
  • Disable Charging Separation With Lid Closed — on supported devices, temporarily disables Charging Separation so the battery can charge while the lid is closed, then safely restores the previous setting.

External-display use remains dock-aware, so intentional docked sessions are not treated as false wakes.

More Reliable Sleep and Wake Automation

SleepManager is now more careful about the order in which apps and system controls are changed.

  • Managed sync apps are allowed to stop before Battery Saver or radio changes are applied.
  • If BasicSync is already syncing when the device goes to sleep, SleepManager can let the active sync finish before stopping it.
  • Closed-lid false wakes no longer interrupt an active sleep, sync or maintenance cycle.
  • Wake restoration is more reliable after Android restarts the SleepManager background service.
  • SleepManager continues to restore only the states it changed whenever that state can be tracked.

BasicSync Improvements

BasicSync 3.18+ continues to support state-aware normal sleep/wake control.

With BasicSync 3.19+:

  • Completion-aware Advanced Sync works independently even when Syncthing-Fork is also enabled.
  • An active sync can finish before SleepManager stops BasicSync for sleep.
  • Advanced Sync modes continue to track sync completion before stopping the client.

Syncthing-Fork keeps its normal STOP/FOLLOW sleep and wake behavior. Completion-aware Advanced Sync support for Syncthing-Fork is still in progress.

Background Reliability

A new About → Background Reliability section helps identify Android settings that may prevent SleepManager from running reliably during long sleep periods.

It checks:

  • Battery Optimization
  • Unused App Restrictions

On devices where active Device Admin already exempts SleepManager from unused-app restrictions, the app now recognizes and displays that exemption correctly.

Cleaner Home and Settings

The Home screen is now organized more clearly into:

  • System Controls
  • Sleep Behavior
  • Clamshell Options
  • App Integrations

Battery Saver also shows its current Android state directly in the app.

The behavior summary has been expanded so it is easier to see what SleepManager is currently configured to do during sleep and wake.

Better Activity and Diagnostics

Diagnostics now include more information about:

  • Enabled sleep and clamshell options
  • Battery Saver and Charging Separation state
  • Lid-sensor support
  • Integration and restore state
  • Recent Android process exits when available

This should make troubleshooting and GitHub bug reports easier without requiring ADB.

Update Experience

  • Added direct access to Release Notes from the update section.
  • SleepManager and the optional Helper continue to be checked and updated independently.
  • Downloaded APKs are verified before Android's installer opens.

SleepManager Helper 1.1.1

The optional Helper also receives an update in this release.

  • Improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth restore reliability across sleep/wake cycles.
  • Restore requests are now tied more safely to the sleep cycle that created them.
  • Repeated restore requests can recognize an already completed restore instead of incorrectly reporting a pending problem.
  • Updated Bluetooth handling for better compatibility with current Android devices and handheld firmware.

The Helper is only required if you want SleepManager to manage Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. It has no launcher icon or separate interface.

Compatibility

  • Android 9 / API 28 or newer
  • BasicSync 3.18+ for state-aware normal sleep/wake control
  • BasicSync 3.19+ for completion-aware Advanced Sync
  • Syncthing-Fork STOP/FOLLOW sleep/wake control remains supported
  • SleepManager Helper 1.1.1
  • Clamshell-specific options appear only when the required compatible hardware is detected

Installation

  1. Download and install SleepManager 0.6.1 from the release assets below.
  2. If you use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth management, download and install SleepManager Helper 1.1.1 as well. You can also install or update the Helper later from About → Updates.
  3. Open SleepManager and review the sleep actions, integrations and new options you want to use.
  4. Enable SleepManager, then tap Finish setup.

If you are updating from an earlier official release, install the new APK over the existing app. Your SleepManager settings are preserved.

Depending on the features you use, Android may ask for additional permissions or background-reliability settings.

No root, Shizuku or ADB is required for normal use.

SleepManager 0.6.0

SleepManager 0.6 focuses on smarter syncing, better battery information and improved reliability.

The biggest addition is new sync automation with BasicSync 3.19+, together with faster Syncthing-Fork wake behavior, more precise sleep battery stats and better diagnostics.

No root, Shizuku or ADB is required for normal use.

What's new

Smarter sync with BasicSync

With BasicSync 3.19+, SleepManager now supports two new options:

  • Periodic sync while sleeping — let BasicSync sync occasionally during long sleep sessions, then return the device to its previous sleep state.
  • Sync then stop on sleep & wake — sync before sleep and after wake, then stop BasicSync again when the sync is finished.

SleepManager also remembers the BasicSync state it changed and restores it without overwriting newer manual changes.

BasicSync 3.18+ remains supported for the normal state-aware sleep/wake integration.

Faster Syncthing-Fork wake

Syncthing-Fork still uses the familiar STOP/FOLLOW sleep/wake integration.

In 0.6, FOLLOW is sent as soon as SleepManager has restored the managed connection instead of waiting for Android's internet-validation delay. This makes Syncthing-Fork resume much faster on affected devices.

Better battery statistics

SleepManager can now use more precise battery data when Android provides it.

This improves:

  • Last sleep
  • drain per hour
  • 7-day averages
  • best / worst drain
  • standby estimates

Short sessions still appear in Last sleep, while long-term averages continue to use eligible non-charging sessions of at least 3 hours.

Better diagnostics

On Android 11+, copied diagnostics can now include the reason Android stopped the previous SleepManager process when that information is available.

This can help identify problems such as low-memory kills, crashes or system/user stops.

AYN Thor improvements

The new sync features work with Thor closed-lid protection without treating false wakes as real wakes or interrupting an active sync.

Existing Thor dock controls remain available:

  • Sleep when external display disconnects
  • Power button sleeps with lid closed

Helper 1.1

The optional Helper has been updated to support the temporary Wi-Fi changes needed by the new sleep-sync features.

Compatibility

  • Android 9 / API 28 or newer
  • BasicSync 3.18+ for normal state-aware sleep/wake control
  • BasicSync 3.19+ for the new advanced sync modes
  • Syncthing-Fork STOP/FOLLOW sleep/wake control remains supported
  • Helper 1.1.0

Installation

1. Install SleepManager

Download and install:

SleepManager-0.6.0.apk

2. Install the Helper if you use Wi-Fi / Bluetooth control

Inside SleepManager, open:

About → Updates → Install Helper

or install:

SleepManager-Helper-1.1.0.apk

3. Configure SleepManager

Choose the actions and optional rules you want, enable SleepManager, then tap Finish setup.

For Syncthing-Fork, enable:

Settings → Behaviour → Service Control by Broadcast

SleepManager 0.5.5

SleepManager 0.5.5 includes all 0.5.4 improvements and adds an immediate Main + Helper update check whenever the app enters the foreground.

What's new

Update checks when the app opens

With Automatic update checks enabled, SleepManager now checks the stable release metadata for both the main app and the installed Helper whenever the app enters the foreground.

  • Opening SleepManager or returning to it from the launcher triggers a fresh check.
  • Rotation or window resizing does not start duplicate checks.
  • The existing daily background check remains enabled.
  • If network connectivity is still recovering, SleepManager waits briefly for a validated connection instead of polling or waking the device.
  • Concurrent foreground, manual and background checks are deduplicated.
  • A failed background check no longer suppresses foreground checks for 24 hours.
  • The check only reads release metadata; APKs are downloaded only after you choose Update.

Independent Helper updates

The optional SleepManager Helper now has its own release version and versionCode.

  • The Helper is bumped only when the Helper itself changes.
  • SleepManager 0.5.4 ships Helper 1.0.0 / versionCode 1000 unchanged.
  • If the Helper is installed and a newer Helper is published, SleepManager can notify and update it independently from the main app.
  • If the Helper is not installed, SleepManager offers Install Helper instead of showing an update notification.
  • If both SleepManager and the Helper need updates, Home and notifications present them together.
  • Main-only and Helper-only updates remain independent.

Direct Helper installs and updates use the same security model as the main app. SleepManager verifies the trusted release source, SHA-256, package ID, version metadata and permanent signing certificate before handing the APK to Android's package installer.

BasicSync compatibility and setup

BasicSync 3.18+ state-aware support is now detected using Android's versionCode rather than parsing the visible version name.

This makes the 3.18+ API check robust even if a BasicSync build uses a different version-name format.

Quick setup also shows whether BasicSync is detected and displays its installed version.

Setup and integration polish

  • Enabling Syncthing-Fork now reminds you to enable Settings → Behaviour → Service control by broadcast in Syncthing-Fork.
  • Quick setup explicitly guides new users to choose their actions, enable SleepManager, then tap Finish setup.
  • Active action/integration icon circles now use the same primary color as active switches and automatically follow Material You when system colors are enabled.

Battery statistics consistency

Long-term battery averages and standby estimates already use eligible non-charging sleep sessions of at least 3 hours.

The remaining UI thresholds and explanatory text now use that same 3-hour source of truth, so the interface and statistics engine are fully consistent.

Updater return-state fix

After Android's package installer is opened, temporary messages such as APK verified. Opening Android installer… are now cleared correctly when returning to SleepManager.

Main features

SleepManager can manage during sleep:

  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • Syncthing-Fork
  • Tailscale
  • JamesDSP
  • BasicSync

It also includes:

SleepManager 0.5.4

SleepManager 0.5.4 improves the built-in updater, makes Helper releases independent from the main app, and adds setup/UI reliability refinements.

What's new

Independent Helper updates

The optional SleepManager Helper now has its own release version and versionCode.

  • The Helper is bumped only when the Helper itself changes.
  • SleepManager 0.5.4 ships Helper 1.0.0 / versionCode 1000 unchanged.
  • If the Helper is installed and a newer Helper is published, SleepManager can notify and update it independently from the main app.

SleepManager 0.5.3

SleepManager 0.5.3 adds state-aware BasicSync support, live integration status, more precise battery reporting and optional Material You colors.

What's new

BasicSync integration

SleepManager now supports BasicSync through its official Android remote-control API.

In BasicSync, enable:

Allow remote control

With BasicSync 3.18 or newer, SleepManager observes BasicSync's current mode and run state while the SleepManager service is active. This lets it preserve the state from before screen-off and restore it correctly after wake.

  • Auto mode + active → STOP during sleep → restore Auto mode on wake
  • Manual mode + started → STOP during sleep → restore started manual mode on wake
  • Manual mode + stopped → left untouched
  • Inactive or transitional states are left untouched when there is nothing useful to stop

The Integrations page also shows the latest observed BasicSync state, such as:

  • Auto mode · Running
  • Manual mode · Running
  • Manual mode · Stopped
  • Paused / Starting / Stopping when reported by BasicSync

If SleepManager has not yet observed a reliable pre-sleep state, it leaves BasicSync unchanged rather than guessing.

Older BasicSync versions remain supported with the legacy behavior:

STOP during sleep → AUTO mode after wake

More precise battery information

When Android exposes the relevant battery counters, SleepManager can now show a more precise current battery percentage in Stats instead of being limited to the rounded Android level.

Capacity estimation now prefers the battery's learned full-charge capacity when available, then falls back to design capacity or the existing level-based estimate.

This does not change the existing sleep-session rules: long-term drain and standby estimates still use eligible non-charging sessions of at least 3 hours.

Appearance and UI polish

SleepManager now includes Use system colors.

  • The existing SleepManager light/dark palette remains the default.
  • On Android 12 / API 31 or newer, enabling Use system colors applies Material You dynamic colors.
  • Fixed light and dark palettes were refined for closer visual consistency.
  • Active integration states such as Running, Starting and Connected now use the same highlighted status color across integrations.
  • Syncthing and BasicSync use distinct integration icons.

Main features

SleepManager can manage during sleep:

  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • Syncthing-Fork
  • Tailscale
  • JamesDSP
  • BasicSync

It also includes:

  • AYN Thor closed-lid protection and dock controls

SleepManager 0.5.2

SleepManager 0.5.2 adds better AYN Thor dock behavior, more reliable battery statistics, and clearer Wi-Fi diagnostics.

What's new

Better AYN Thor dock support

Closed-lid protection is now dock-aware.

  • Closing the Thor while an external display is active no longer triggers a false sleep.
  • Sleep when external display disconnects can put the Thor to sleep automatically if the external display is unplugged while the lid is still closed.
  • Power button sleeps with lid closed lets the Power button start a normal sleep cycle while the Thor is awake with the lid closed.
  • Turning these optional controls off keeps AYN's default behavior.
  • SleepManager never wakes an already sleeping Thor to implement these options.

More reliable battery statistics

Short sleeps can distort hourly drain estimates, so SleepManager now uses only eligible sleep sessions of 3 hours or longer for:

  • 7-day drain average
  • charge drain
  • deep-sleep average
  • measured sleep total
  • best / worst drain
  • standby estimates

Shorter sleeps are still visible in Last sleep and history.

Sessions containing charging remain excluded from drain statistics.

Clearer Wi-Fi failure diagnostics

SleepManager can now distinguish between Wi-Fi already being in the requested state and a Wi-Fi toggle that was actually attempted but failed.

The Activity log and copied diagnostics now include:

  • attempted action
  • success / failure
  • Airplane-mode state

When relevant, the Activity log can show:

Wi-Fi toggle failed · Airplane mode is enabled

Main features

SleepManager can manage during sleep:

  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • Syncthing-Fork
  • Tailscale
  • JamesDSP

It also includes:

  • AYN Thor closed-lid protection and dock controls

SleepManager 0.5.1

SleepManager 0.5.1 brings a secure built-in updater, better background reliability on Android handhelds, new battery insights, and several important improvements introduced with 0.5.0.

What's new in 0.5.1

Built-in secure updater

SleepManager can now check for new stable releases directly from the app.

When an update is available, SleepManager can:

  • notify you
  • download the APK directly
  • verify its SHA-256
  • verify the package, version and official SleepManager signing certificate
  • open Android's official installer

No root, Shizuku or ADB is required.

Better background reliability

  • SleepManager is hidden from Android Recents to avoid accidental service termination on devices such as the AYN Thor.
  • Permission screens, App info, GitHub links and update screens now work without closing the app's background task.
  • The service restarts automatically after reboot or app update when SleepManager is enabled.

Improved battery stats

The battery gauge can now cycle through:

  • battery capacity
  • estimated standby time
  • sleep drain per hour
  • deep-sleep percentage

New notification icon

The generic Android alarm icon has been replaced with a dedicated SleepManager status-bar icon.

Also included from 0.5.0

JamesDSP support

SleepManager can automatically turn JamesDSP OFF during sleep and ON again after wake.

Sleep battery tracking

SleepManager records:

  • battery drain during sleep
  • sleep duration
  • drain per hour
  • 7-day averages
  • measured mAh when supported
  • deep-sleep percentage
  • standby estimates

Charging sessions are excluded from drain averages.

AYN Thor closed-lid protection

SleepManager monitors the Thor Hall sensor directly.

If the Thor wakes while the lid is still closed, SleepManager sends it back to sleep and prevents the normal wake sequence from restoring Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or other integrations too early.

More reliable sleep / wake handling

  • More durable sleep transactions
  • Better recovery after process/service restarts
  • Improved Syncthing-Fork STOP/FOLLOW handling
  • Better responsive layouts for handheld and tablet screens

6d63893

SleepManager 0.5.0

SleepManager 0.5.0 adds sleep battery statistics, JamesDSP integration, stronger recovery logic and a more polished responsive interface.

Highlights

JamesDSP sleep / wake integration

  • Detects the JamesDSP Manager package used by O2P Tweaks and the standard RootlessJamesDSP package when available.
  • Sends JamesDSP OFF when sleep actions run.
  • Sends JamesDSP ON again on a real wake.
  • Uses JamesDSP's exported power-control receiver; no root, Shizuku or ADB is required.
  • JamesDSP does not expose a public power-state query to normal apps, so SleepManager does not show a guessed Running / Stopped state.
  • Because the previous JamesDSP state cannot be read reliably, enabling this integration is an explicit OFF while asleep / ON while awake policy.

Sleep battery dashboard and statistics

  • Shows the current battery level near the top of Home.
  • Tracks the last completed sleep session, duration and battery percentage used.
  • Shows drain per hour and a rolling 7-day average.
  • Uses Android's charge counter when available to show measured mAh usage.
  • Excludes sleep sessions that included charging from drain averages.
  • AYN Thor closed-lid false wakes remain part of the same sleep session instead of ending the measurement.

Stronger AYN Thor recovery

  • Queries the current Hall-switch state when closed-lid protection starts.
  • Persists the last known lid state as a fallback across service recovery.
  • Closed-lid false wakes continue to avoid the normal wake restore sequence.
  • Grace period / Custom delay are not cancelled by a closed-lid false wake.

More resilient sleep / wake transactions

  • Service startup validates the start request before applying screen state.
  • Main ↔ Helper sleep/restore requests are more idempotent and durable.
  • Critical transaction state is persisted synchronously.
  • Pending restore failures are surfaced on Home and can be explicitly forgotten when recovery is no longer possible.
  • Disabling SleepManager first attempts to restore changes still owned by the active transaction.

Better Syncthing-Fork verification

  • When the pre-sleep running state can be confirmed, SleepManager verifies that Syncthing actually stopped after the STOP grace period.
  • If STOP cannot be confirmed, SleepManager does not pretend that the stop succeeded.
  • Compatible STOP/FOLLOW behavior remains available when Syncthing state cannot be queried.

Responsive UI and polish

  • Added dedicated layouts and regression checks for compact portrait, landscape and wider handheld/tablet screens.
  • Home, Advanced, Stats, Activity log and About keep independent scroll positions.
  • The sleep/wake test dialog scrolls correctly on short landscape displays.
  • Integration state labels use sentence case and setting text spacing was refined.
  • Navigation alignment and behavior-card hierarchy were polished for handheld screens.

Compatibility

  • Android 9 / API 28 or newer
  • Main app target SDK: 36
  • Compatibility Helper target SDK: 28
  • Same package IDs and permanent signing certificate as previous stable releases
  • Version code 501, so devices running the 0.5.0 beta can update normally to this stable build

Installation / update

  1. Install SleepManager 0.5.0.
  2. Install SleepManager Helper 0.5.0 if you use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth management.
  3. Existing settings are preserved when updating an official signed build.
  4. For Syncthing-Fork, keep Settings → Behaviour → Service Control by Broadcast enabled.
  5. For AYN Thor protection, keep the one-time Device Admin permission enabled.

No root, Shizuku or ADB is required on the device.
