Releases: BenItBuhner/Murmur
Release list
Murmur v0.6.7
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- A dictation you can feel, on Android. Each moment has its own touch: a click when recording starts, a tick when it switches to transcribing, a light-then-firm pulse when the text lands, and a double click for a problem (a limit reached, a Murmur service unavailable, nothing heard). It happens whatever started the dictation: the floating button, the desktop-style pill's confirm and cancel, a hardware shortcut, Retry on the pill or in History. The Haptics switch on the Dictation button screen (on by default, beside Sounds) governs all of it, and the patterns follow the system's Touch feedback setting and intensity, like the keyboard's own taps; the pill preview on that screen plays them so the switch can be tried where it lives. A phone without a vibrator stays still.
- The haptics that were already there never vibrated; fixed. The light tap added with the sound cues in 0.5.x asked the vibrator without the
VIBRATEpermission, which Android refused quietly, so on a real phone those taps never happened. The permission is declared now.

What's Changed

Full Changelog: v0.6.6...v0.6.7
Murmur v0.6.6
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- A Murmur service that is down no longer hangs your dictation. When the speech or formatting service behind Murmur's models is slow or down, a dictation used to wait up to 45 seconds and end in a bare error. The server now gives each request a budget sized from healthy response times (about 15 seconds for a short clip, a little more for a long one, 8 seconds per formatting round), retries once only when the request cannot have reached the model, and stops asking a provider that has just failed three times in a row for 15 seconds. The pill says "Murmur's speech service is unavailable right now" (or "formatting service"), your recording is kept for Retry, and nothing that failed is counted against your account. Your own provider is unaffected.

What's Changed
- Gateway fails fast when its provider is down: bounded budgets, one safe retry,
provider_unavailable, calm client notice by @BenItBuhner in #88 - v0.6.6 by @BenItBuhner in #89
Full Changelog: v0.6.5...v0.6.6
Murmur v0.6.5
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- Android account sync, fixed. Since 0.6.1 a phone could sit on "Offline" with hundreds of pending changes while dictation kept working. Two defects: a stats reply the app could not read blocked every pending change queued behind it, and a sign-in race at start-up could leave the phone offline until the app was restarted. The reply is read correctly now, a change the server has already taken is never retried, and the connection is no longer a one-shot: sync reconnects and re-authenticates on its own after network loss, restarts and updates, with a short, growing pause between attempts.
- Sync now really retries, and says why if it can't. The Sync row names the reason in plain words (no network, a token Clerk would not give, the server not answering) instead of a bare Offline, and a new Connection details diagnostic under Account › Diagnostics shows exactly what is happening (boot, Clerk, the last token fetch, the Convex socket, the queue), with Copy for a report you can share. A launch that died while connecting now holds the cloud back for a while and brings it up again by itself, rather than until the app is restarted.
- No plan before your status arrives. The account card on Android and desktop used to show Free and "Waiting for your account status…" while the status was still loading; it now says "Checking your account…" with no badge until the status is here, then Unlimited, the private-testing notice or your plan as before.

What's Changed
- Android sync: authenticate until it works, never wedge the outbox, Connection details, no plan before the status by @BenItBuhner in #86
- v0.6.5 by @BenItBuhner in #87
Full Changelog: v0.6.4...v0.6.5
Murmur v0.6.4
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- Android updates no longer install in the background. Murmur still checks for a new version and, with Download updates automatically on (the setting that was called Install automatically; your choice carries over), downloads and verifies it in the background. Then it posts one quiet notification per version and waits: the install starts only when you tap Install on the Updates screen, so Play Protect no longer pops up on its own in the middle of something. Inside the app the drawer dot and the Home card say a version is ready.
- A cleaner layout on every platform. Android's drawer is down to Home, History, Dictionary and snippets, Style, and one Settings area, with a single account entry; the Listening row is gone. On desktop the sidebar follows the same structure: Dictionary and snippets are one page, and Speech model, Shortcuts, Microphone, Dictation button and Appearance are pages of their own. Nothing moved out of reach; it moved to where the other platform keeps it.
- Dialogs and the drawer dim properly in light mode. The scrim behind a dialog and behind the open drawer darkened in dark mode but faded the screen to white in light mode; it darkens in both now, on both apps.
- A predictive back animation that follows your finger. On Android, pulling back from a screen slides it aside with your finger instead of shrinking it, and letting go finishes the motion; the screen below is previewed as you pull.

What's Changed
- Android: install updates only on the user's tap; Google Play flavor without an updater by @BenItBuhner in #83
- One navigation structure on every platform, theme-agnostic scrims, predictive back ported from Cursor for Android by @BenItBuhner in #84
- v0.6.4 by @BenItBuhner in #85
Full Changelog: v0.6.3...v0.6.4
Murmur v0.6.3
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- Fast skips AI formatting. A Fast dictation now takes the quick path all the way: the speech model, then the instant Light cleanup (capitalisation, punctuation, fillers, spoken commands, dictionary, snippets) straight into the field, with no formatting-model request on either the managed or your own model. Normal is unchanged. The choice follows the speed you asked for, so it holds even while the server falls back to the normal speech model. History marks the entry fast and says "model skipped: fast speed".
- Per-app rules can set a Speed. A rule on the Style page (desktop) or Style screen (Android) can pick Normal or Fast for one app alongside its tone and formatting, with the same precedence: the first matching rule wins, Default inherits the device's Speed setting. Rule speeds sync between devices with the rest of the rule; an older app that re-saves a rule leaves the speed inheriting.
- Two desktop fixes in the same path. A per-app rule's formatting-mode override never applied on desktop (the engine read the field under a different name than the apps store it); it does now. And Add rule used to reset the whole Style section (tone, instructions, mode, the use of the dictionary) because a rule with an empty match failed validation while you were still typing it; the rule stays and the section keeps its settings.

Full Changelog: v0.6.2...v0.6.3
Murmur v0.6.2
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- A Speed setting for Murmur's speech model. Models → Speech to text on desktop and the Speech model screen on Android gain a Speed row, shown when the speech source is Murmur's models: Normal (today's model, the default) or Fast, a quicker model the server may offer. Fast is a device setting, so a phone and a laptop can differ. Your own provider has no Speed row; nothing changes there.
- Fast falls back to Normal, and says so, until the fast model is available. While the server has no fast model yet, or its provider does not know the model, a Fast dictation runs on Normal and the Speed row carries a note ("Fast isn't available on this server yet; dictations use Normal until it is"). History shows which ran: a
fastorfast unavailabletag on the row, "Fast isn't available yet, used Normal" in the detail, and the model line ends in Normal or Fast. Every other error from the server is reported as before, never hidden behind the fallback.

What's Changed

- Speed setting for Murmur's speech model: Normal / Fast with server-side fallback by @BenItBuhner in #79

Full Changelog: v0.6.1...v0.6.2
Murmur v0.6.1
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- Android 0.6.0 crashed at launch; fixed. The sign-in screen that 0.6.0 opens with crashed the moment it appeared (Clerk's form was given no height to fit in), and once Clerk had cached its state the app died on every launch after that. The form now has a finite height, so tall phones fit everything and short ones scroll.
- A server problem can no longer stop the app from starting. Clerk, the Convex client and the sync engine each come up behind a guard: whatever fails, Murmur runs in local mode, with your own provider, settings and history all working, and the Account screen says "Couldn't connect to Murmur's server" with the cause and a Try again. The sign-in screen offers Continue without an account after 20 seconds or on a Clerk error, and a launch that dies while the cloud is coming up makes the next launch skip the cloud.
- Updates verify against GitHub's own file checksums and retry. A phone on 0.5.11 downloaded 0.6.0 and then said the release ships no checksum file; it does, and the message was a failed download of it. Both apps now check the file against the checksum GitHub records for every release asset (no second download), fall back to
SHA256SUMS.txtwith retries, and tell a checksum that could not be fetched (retried after an hour) apart from one that does not exist (manual install only). Install 0.6.1 by hand once; from then on updates install on their own.

Murmur v0.6.0
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- Murmur connects to its own server. This is the first release built against Murmur's production instance. Sign in from Account (an email code today; Google sign-in is on its way) and your dictionary, snippets, style, per-app rules and, if you switch it on, dictation history stay in step across your devices, and the apps can dictate through Murmur's own speech and formatting models. The server is in private testing: those models answer invited accounts only, and any other account that signs in is told so on Home and Account while its dictionary, snippets, style and stats keep syncing. Nothing needs an account: your own provider or a local model works as before, on every platform, and nothing is billed.
- The website moved to murmur.techlitnow.com. The landing, download and account pages, the release manifest (
/api/releases/latest) and the/download/{windows,linux,android}redirects now live at murmur.techlitnow.com.

Murmur v0.5.11
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- The floating button appears the moment you tap into a text field. It goes to the spot where your keyboard will stop as soon as a field is focused or tapped, about 80 ms before Android reports the keyboard, instead of waiting for that report. If a field brings no keyboard up (a custom keypad, say), the button disappears again within a third of a second and Murmur remembers not to do that for that field. Nothing changes in keyboard mode or with a hardware keyboard attached.
- Less work between the tap and the button. The button's windows are created once and kept ready in the background rather than rebuilt on every opening, and the reads of other apps' views that used to run on the path that shows the button (the keyboard's own window while it is busy coming up, the focused field) have moved to a thread of their own, so a slow app never delays it. The keyboard timing log records each of these steps.
Local-only build
This release is local-only. There is no production Convex or Clerk instance yet, so
accounts and cloud sync are disabled: dictionary, snippets, and settings stay on the device.
Nothing is uploaded. A future release will turn accounts on once that instance exists.

Murmur v0.5.10
Hold a key (or tap a pill), speak, and clean text lands wherever your cursor is.
What's new
- No half-second wait for keyboards Murmur could not place. Keyboards whose resting position could not be read from their window (a keyboard that hides its views from accessibility services, one in a full-screen window, or one resting low in its window) made the floating button wait about half a second on every opening. Where such a keyboard rests is now remembered, per keyboard and screen size, and kept across restarts, so the button appears at that spot from the keyboard's first report; only the very first opening still waits to learn it. Keyboards that were already placed from their window are unchanged.
- Copy keyboard timing log. Setup → Permissions gains a Diagnostics group with a Copy keyboard timing log button: it copies a timestamped trace of the last few keyboard openings and closings (what Android reported and when, what the button did with it) so you can share it when the button is late or in the wrong place. The log stays on the device, is never sent anywhere, and never contains typed text.
