MetaEdit Plus - Advanced Tag Editor 2.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@BerndHagen BerndHagen released this 23 Sep 15:45

Installation and update verification

The 2.0.0 installer and update ZIP were replaced on 23 September 2026 to simplify the release downloads. If you downloaded 2.0.0 earlier, download the installer again: the version number has not changed, so an existing 2.0.0 installation will not automatically replace the earlier build. The Windows installer is not Authenticode-signed, so Windows may show an unknown-publisher warning or stricter application-control settings may block it. Download only from this official GitHub release. MetaEdit checks an update installer against the SHA-256 digest and exact size in the official GitHub release asset record before launch. Compatible Studio Hub builds use the same digest.

After three months of intensive development, MetaEdit Plus returns with its largest update so far. During that time, the application has been rebuilt into a professional audio and video metadata workspace with 56 standard fields, batch and per-file editing, reviewed staging, provider-assisted identification, complete artwork collections, library analysis, automation, and recoverable writes. A complete interface redesign brings the editor, navigation, workflow pages, write pipeline, settings, and installer into one consistent system created for long, focused library sessions from the first file selection through the final reviewed write.

Complete Workspace Redesign

The application was rebuilt as one coordinated editing workspace.

  • Unified application layout: the Library, metadata editor, contextual inspector, Process Log, workflow pages, and action bar now work together in one consistent interface.
  • Consistent visual system: pages, windows, menus, text fields, tables, dialogs, context menus, scrollbars, and action buttons use the same spacing, borders, interaction states, and keyboard behaviour.
  • Synchronized selection: the selected file remains aligned across the Library, editor, workflow pages, Previous and Next commands, and reviewed results.
  • Responsive page layouts: full-window and compact layouts retain usable controls, complete table columns, predictable scrolling, and a fixed action area without clipped or overlapping content.
  • Command Center: search the complete command catalog by name, purpose, or shortcut, launch available commands from the keyboard, and see why an unavailable command cannot run in the current scope.

Advanced Metadata Editor

  • 56 standard metadata fields: Core, Credits, Release, IDs & Sorting, and Technical sections cover identity, contributors, release data, catalog values, sorting, encoding, language, and loudness metadata.
  • Batch and Per-File modes: apply deliberate shared edits to checked files or maintain independent staged values for each selected file.
  • Custom and format-specific fields: edit additional native fields directly with consistent inline Name, Value, Add, and Delete behaviour.
  • Reusable editor layouts: choose which fields are visible, order them within each section, and save layouts for different tagging jobs.
  • Saved field sets and mappings: store reusable metadata sets, restore selected values, and maintain container-specific field mappings.

Reviewed Staging and Safe Writes

  • One staging model: editor changes, artwork, provider results, lyrics, ReplayGain values, rules, and imports all enter the same reviewed change set.
  • Detailed Change Review: inspect the destination file, field, current value, and proposed value before committing changes.
  • Explicit write boundary: analysis and preview commands never write media. Write Tags remains the deliberate final action.
  • Guarded file updates: the checked scope is validated before mutation, same-folder working copies protect replacement operations, and failures remain visible per file.
  • Recovery, undo, and redo: supported writes retain exact before-and-after metadata, extended fields, and complete artwork collections for recovery operations.

Provider-Assisted Auto Tag

  • Per-file identification: identify an individual recording from acoustic and metadata evidence, then review confidence, provider agreement, conflicts, artwork, and proposed fields.
  • Batch release matching: identify a checked album as one release, review editions and track assignments, and stage selected metadata across the collection.
  • Multiple metadata sources: AcoustID, MusicBrainz, Discogs, and iTunes can contribute evidence without bypassing user review.
  • Field and artwork choices: compare provider values with existing tags and decide exactly what enters staging.
  • Visible provider failures: rate limits, authentication errors, malformed responses, cancellation, and unavailable sources are reported without creating false matches or writes.

Complete Artwork Collections

  • Multiple embedded images: add, replace, reorder, describe, inspect, export, and remove complete picture collections instead of reducing a file to one cover.
  • Artwork roles and descriptions: maintain front and back covers, booklet pages, media artwork, artist images, illustrations, logos, and other supported picture types.
  • Detailed image properties: inspect dimensions, encoded size, format, aspect ratio, colour depth, resolution, pixel format, colour profile, alpha channel, frame count, pixel count, and orientation.
  • Controlled image processing: configure maximum dimensions, JPEG quality, PNG handling, and the default picture type while keeping changes staged until Write Tags.
  • Collection-safe copy and paste: transfer complete ordered collections without flattening unrelated embedded artwork.

Text, Filename, and Rule Automation

  • Text Tools: find and replace values, change letter case, and normalize whitespace across selected fields with a reviewed preview.
  • Tags from Filename: extract structured metadata from filenames with reusable field expressions.
  • Filename from Tags: build filenames from metadata with invalid-character and collision checks before any rename.
  • Filename from Filename: rearrange existing filename structures without requiring tag changes.
  • Rule Studio: combine conditions with ordered actions, dry-run the checked scope, inspect every result, and save reusable local rules.
  • Clean & Organize: create a destination plan, review moves and renames, resolve conflicts, and commit guarded organization work with recovery support.

Library and Collection Intelligence

  • Persistent libraries: register folders, build local indexes, rescan changed media, and reopen large collections without rebuilding every view from scratch.
  • Configurable Library columns: choose, order, size, sort, and save built-in or expression-driven columns with guarded width values.
  • Library Health: find unreadable tags, missing fields, album inconsistencies, numbering problems, artwork differences, and duplicate evidence without changing media.
  • Search and filtering: filter loaded media and large result sets while preserving keyboard focus and the active selection.
  • Professional Process Log: review ordered application, Library, editing, analysis, and write events with status, task, message, progress, and useful target context.

Lyrics, ReplayGain, Chapters, and Video

  • Lyrics Lookup: search, compare, and preview plain or synchronized lyrics, then stage or export the selected result.
  • ReplayGain analysis: decode checked audio, calculate track and album evidence, and stage ReplayGain 2 values without normalizing or re-encoding the source.
  • Chapter Editor: create and edit chapter timing, titles, subtitles, identifiers, URLs, and descriptions with validation and sidecar support.
  • Video metadata: inspect and edit supported video-container metadata alongside audio collections.
  • Optional media tools: commands that depend on FFmpeg, MKVToolNix, or fpcalc clearly report their requirements when a tool is unavailable.

Import, Export, and Reporting

  • Reviewed metadata import: inspect CSV and line-pattern sources with matched, unmatched, duplicate, empty, and invalid rows kept visible before staging.
  • Structured export: create CSV, JSON, M3U, M3U8, metadata reports, and formatted text output from the checked scope.
  • Copy as Text: build reusable templates, group output, preview the exact document, and copy or save it without changing media.
  • Profile archives and support bundles: back up reusable settings and export redacted diagnostics without including media, artwork bytes, credentials, or private file content.

Local Operation, Optional Sync, and Updates

  • Fully usable without an account: editing, analysis, staging, writing, recovery, and local profiles do not require Arctisoft Studio Hub.
  • Optional preference sync: Studio Hub synchronization is off by default and covers portable application preferences only. Media, artwork bytes, paths, credentials, indexes, and recovery data remain local.
  • Standalone application updates: Stable, Preview, and Manual channels can be checked directly from MetaEdit Plus. Available installers are downloaded and verified before launch.
  • Optional Hub management: Arctisoft Studio Hub can continue to install, launch, and update MetaEdit Plus alongside other Arctisoft applications.

Installer and Release Reliability

  • Reworked Windows installer: the installer supports clean installation, recognized upgrades, uninstall registration, and requested shortcuts.
  • Verified update packages: GitHub release asset records provide the published file size and SHA-256 digest; MetaEdit verifies both before launching an update.
  • Broader application validation: media formats, write transactions, recovery, accessibility, responsive layouts, workflows, installer behaviour, and release artifacts are covered by the reb...

MetaEdit Plus - Smart Tag Editor v1.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@BerndHagen BerndHagen released this 10 Jun 18:59

This is a major release built around a complete visual redesign of MetaEdit Plus. The old flat grey interface was replaced with a deep, modern glass theme that runs edge to edge across every window. Alongside the redesign, this update changes how folders are loaded, reworks the CSV import screen, forces English number and date formatting, and makes the app icon reliable. Every existing feature stays exactly where you expect it.

A New Look

The entire application was re-themed from scratch.

  • New colour identity: The flat grey interface was replaced with a deep navy-and-teal palette, a luminous cyan accent, and warm amber highlights. The change reaches every screen, panel, field, and button in the app.
  • Glass-like surfaces: Flat backgrounds were replaced with soft gradients, gentle depth, a faint atmospheric glow, and glass highlights, giving the interface a polished, three-dimensional feel.
  • Glow and lighting: Active section tabs, focused fields, open dropdowns, and hovered buttons now light up with a soft accent glow, so it is always clear what you are interacting with.
  • Cleaner section headers: The Directory, Production, Technical, and Composition headers were simplified to clean centred labels, dropping their old inline icons.
  • Recessed input fields: Text fields now use a darker recessed style with a clear focus highlight, so the field you are editing stands out.
  • Crisp rounded corners: The window, panels, fields, dropdowns, and menus all use true rounded corners that clip their contents cleanly and stay sharp on every monitor and display-scaling setting.
  • Steadier controls: Hover effects no longer scale elements (which could leave borders looking clipped or faint); controls now stay crisp and simply light up with highlight and glow feedback.
  • Performance graph: The performance graph now sits cleanly inside its rounded frame instead of spilling over its edges.

One Consistent Design Across Every Window

Every window now shares the same design.

  • Unified chrome: Auto Tag, Text Tools, CSV Import / Export, Track Info, and Settings now use the same title bar, close button, buttons, spacing, rounded corners, and recessed panels, so the application feels like one cohesive whole instead of a collection of separate windows.
  • Track Info refresh: Track Info now follows the same look, with recessed content panels, subtle dividers, and dimmed placeholders for empty values, so populated details stand out at a glance.

Redesigned Right-Click Menus

  • New menu style: Every right-click menu in the app was rebuilt with a single modern look — an accent bar, clear icons, neatly inset separators, and one consistent size — so cut, copy, paste, and the other menu actions look and behave the same everywhere.

Folder Loading

  • Browse now opens a folder: The Browse button now opens a folder picker and loads the whole folder at once, instead of asking you to select individual files. It also remembers the folder you last worked in.

CSV Import / Export

The CSV import screen was reorganized and given more useful information.

  • Mode at the top: The Import / Export switch now sits at the very top of the screen, above the file overview, since it is the first choice you make.
  • Clearer import source: The selected CSV now appears in a text field with a Browse button beside it, so you can see at a glance which file is loaded.
  • Requirements and summary: The import view now shows what the CSV needs to contain and a live summary of how many rows were matched, skipped, and overwritten.
  • Less clutter: The long explanatory box and the redundant status box were removed; status now appears as a single subtle line, only after a file is loaded.

Auto Tag and Text Tools

  • Unified Auto Tag search bar: The search field and the Scan button now sit together as a single dark bar, making the search row read as one clear control.
  • Scrollable Text Tools preview: The change preview now scrolls with the mouse wheel, so reviewing a long list of changes no longer pushes the whole page around.

Cover Art

  • Reliable cover-art saving: Cover art you added — by selecting an image, dropping one onto the thumbnail, or applying it from Auto Tag — could silently fail to be written to your files when saving, most noticeably when writing in Batch Mode. Cover art now saves reliably in both Batch and Per-File modes.

English Formatting

  • English everywhere: Numbers, dates, and times now always display in English formatting (for example, a dot as the decimal separator), regardless of your system's regional settings, for a consistent experience on every machine.

App Icon

  • Always visible: The MetaEdit Plus icon no longer occasionally falls back to the generic default icon. It now displays reliably in the taskbar, the window title bar, Alt+Tab, and everywhere else Windows shows it.

MetaEdit Plus - Smart Tag Editor v1.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@BerndHagen BerndHagen released this 18 May 20:20

This update unifies tag save behavior across all write paths, shows relative file paths in the file list, improves session handling reliability, tracks progression for guest users, and hardens the installer against stale registry states.

Tag Save Settings

Tag writes now consistently apply all user-configured settings across every operation.

  • Unified write behavior: Saving tags - whether writing metadata, embedding cover art, or clearing fields - now always applies the same settings: ID3v2 version, text encoding, JPEG quality, maximum cover art dimensions, and whether ID3v1 and APE tags are kept or removed. Previously these settings were only applied on some write paths and silently ignored on others.
  • Cover art encoding: Cover art is now encoded through the same pipeline for all operations. Format detection, quality reduction, and size capping all use the values configured in Settings, regardless of where the save originates.

File Path Display

The file list now shows relative paths when files are loaded from a folder.

  • Relative paths: When a folder is loaded, each file in the list is shown relative to the root of that folder. Files in subfolders appear as subfolder/song.mp3 instead of just song.mp3, making it clear where each file sits in the folder structure.
  • Fallback: If a relative path cannot be resolved for a file, the file name is shown as a fallback.

Session Handling

MetaEdit now validates and refreshes sessions more proactively.

  • Startup session check: On launch, the active session is validated before it is used. If the token is expired but a refresh token is available, the session is refreshed before the app continues. Sessions with missing or empty credentials are treated as unauthenticated rather than being passed through silently.
  • Cloud settings: The cloud settings service fetches a fresh token before each API call, picking up sessions refreshed by the Hub while the app is open.

Guest Progression

Tag operations now award experience points to local users who are not signed in.

  • Guest XP: When tags are saved and no account is active, the XP earned for the operation is credited to the local guest profile. Progression is tracked consistently whether or not you are signed in.

AutoTag

  • File paths with special characters: The fingerprint tool is now launched with each argument passed separately, so file paths containing spaces, brackets, or other special characters are handled correctly. Previously such paths could cause the fingerprint lookup to fail silently.
  • Improved metadata parsing: Copyright field extraction and MusicBrainz release link parsing were improved to handle a wider range of response formats from the lookup API.
  • Secure connections: The custom certificate bypass in the acoustic fingerprint HTTP client has been removed. Connections now use standard TLS validation.

Context Menu and UI

  • Cover art corners: Cover art previews in the AutoTag window no longer clip with jagged edges at the corners. The rendering approach was changed to produce clean rounded corners.
  • Context menu borders: Padding was removed from all context menu popup borders for a tighter appearance consistent with the rest of the interface.
  • File list separator: The file list separator line now uses the same style as in Medio - no margin and an explicit width.
  • Tool window rendering: Tool windows now have layout rounding and device pixel snapping enabled for crisper edge rendering on all display configurations.

Installer

  • Stale install detection: The installer validates that the uninstall executable and install directory exist before treating the application as already installed. Leftover registry entries from a previously removed or partially installed copy no longer trigger a false "already installed" result.
  • Uninstall key cleanup: Orphaned uninstall registry keys and shortcuts pointing to files that no longer exist are removed automatically during the install check.

Note: If you encounter any bugs or issues, please don't hesitate to open an issue. For any questions or to start a discussion, feel free to initiate a discussion on the GitHub repository.

MetaEdit Plus - Smart Tag Editor v1.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@BerndHagen BerndHagen released this 21 Apr 18:05

This update focuses on interface consistency, clearer workflow feedback, and a smoother CSV and Text Tools experience across MetaEdit Plus.

Workflow Feedback and Main Window Tools

The main editing workflow now provides clearer feedback and faster access to common actions.

  • Undo backup signals: Metadata operations now surface clearer console feedback when undo snapshots are being created before larger changes are applied.
  • Undo and Redo buttons: Dedicated Undo and Redo buttons are now available in the main toolbar alongside the existing dropdown controls.
  • Hover image actions: Main action buttons now use dedicated hover-state icon assets for a more polished interactive feel.
  • Arctisoft Studio Hub launch: The main window now surfaces Arctisoft Studio Hub more clearly as the launch target for related app navigation.

File Tools - Better Loading and Inspection

File-oriented workflows are now faster and easier to inspect.

  • Track Info window: A dedicated Track Info window is now available from the file list context menu, exposing file, audio, and tag details for the selected item.
  • CSV async loading: The CSV Import Export window now loads tag data asynchronously after opening, avoiding the startup freeze when many files are loaded.
  • Folder drag-drop auto-detect: Dragging a folder into MetaEdit now auto-detects the dominant file format more intelligently.

UI Consistency - Polished Controls

Multiple windows now follow the same interaction rules and visual language more reliably.

  • Dropdown behavior: Main window, CSV window, and Settings dropdowns now close more reliably on outside clicks and restore their rounded trigger corners correctly.
  • Dropdown polish: Library, Format, and Mode dropdowns use a cleaner fade-in animation, a normalized format font, and a crisper separator between trigger and popup.
  • Dropdown reliability: Settings dropdowns now always restore their rounded trigger corners when they close, including outside clicks and window deactivation.
  • Consistent button hover: Tool-window buttons now use the MetaEdit-style foreground hover instead of switching background colors.
  • Directory list spacing: The file list uses balanced left and right padding so hover and selection states stay visually centered, even when the vertical scrollbar appears.
  • Clearer section titles: Auto-Tag, CSV Import/Export, and Text Tools now use more descriptive section headers for better readability.
  • Refined scrollbars: Main-window and tool-window scrollbars now use a slimmer rounded style that better matches the current UI.

Text Tools - Clearer Apply Behavior

Text Tools now communicates its direct-apply workflow more clearly and keeps the main editor in sync after changes are applied.

  • Editor refresh: After applying Find Replace or Case Conversion changes, the visible main metadata fields are refreshed to match the updated state.
  • Direct-apply notice: The console now explicitly states that Text Tools changes were applied immediately, so users do not have to guess whether a separate Write Tags step is still needed.

Store Restore - Better History Entries

Stored field backups are now easier to understand before restoring.

  • Descriptive entries: Restore history entries now show which stored fields are included instead of only showing a timestamp.
  • Detailed tooltips: Hovering a restore entry reveals a fuller summary of stored fields plus the saved time.

CSV Import Export - Import First

The CSV tool now follows the more common workflow order.

  • Import-first layout: The mode switch now shows Import first and Export second.
  • Default opening mode: CSV Import/Export opens on the Import tab by default.

Choose a tag to compare

@BerndHagen BerndHagen released this 13 Apr 02:21

This update fixes cloud settings synchronization so that your tag settings are properly restored from the cloud after reinstallation.

Cloud Settings Sync

Cloud sync requests now use the correct user credentials, resolving an issue where tag settings could not be loaded or saved to the cloud.

  • Authentication fix: Cloud sync now properly authenticates with the server, ensuring your saved tag settings are restored on launch.

Note: If you encounter any bugs or issues, please don't hesitate to open an issue. For any questions or to start a discussion, feel free to initiate a discussion on the GitHub repository.

MetaEdit Plus - Smart Tag Editor v1.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@BerndHagen BerndHagen released this 04 Apr 17:23

This is a major update that introduces powerful new text and metadata tools, cloud settings synchronization through Arctisoft Hub, a redesigned Auto-Tag and settings interface, a brand-new installer experience, and dozens of stability and visual improvements.

Text Tools - Find & Replace, Case Conversion, File Patterns

A new Text Tools window (Ctrl+H) combines three powerful metadata editing operations into a single interface with live preview.

  • Find & Replace: Search and replace text across 8 metadata fields (Performer, Album Artist, Album, Genre, Composer, Publisher, Description, Copyright) with optional case-sensitive matching. Preview all changes before applying.
  • Case Conversion: Convert metadata text to Title Case, UPPERCASE, or lowercase across selected fields. Useful for cleaning up inconsistent capitalization from imported tags.
  • File Pattern Tool: Extract metadata from filenames (Ctrl+Shift+T) or rename files based on their metadata tags (Ctrl+Shift+R) using customizable pattern placeholders like %artist% - %album% - %track%.

CSV Export & Import - Bulk Metadata Management

A new CSV Export/Import window allows metadata to be managed in external spreadsheet tools.

  • Export: Select which metadata fields to include, preview the output, and export metadata from all loaded files to a CSV file.
  • Import: Load a CSV file, match rows to files by filename or full path, preview the matched data, and apply imported metadata to matching files in bulk.
  • Field Selection: Individual checkboxes for all 18 metadata fields allow precise control over what gets exported or imported.

Cover Art Search - Online Artwork Lookup

A new Cover Art Search window lets you search for album artwork by artist and album name.

  • Online Search: Queries MusicBrainz to find high-quality cover art matching the entered artist and album.
  • Thumbnail Preview: Search results are displayed as thumbnail previews for easy comparison before selecting.
  • Direct Embedding: Select a cover and apply it directly to your files without needing to save the image separately.

Cloud Settings Sync - Arctisoft Hub Integration

MetaEdit Plus now synchronizes your tag settings to the cloud through Arctisoft Hub.

  • Automatic sync: When you are signed in to Arctisoft Hub, your settings are loaded from the cloud on launch and saved back when you save them.
  • Shared authentication: No separate login required — MetaEdit Plus uses your existing Arctisoft Hub session.
  • What gets synced: ID3v2 version, text encoding, cover image settings, tag retention options, and auto-tag scope.

Auto-Tag - Redesigned Interface

The Auto-Tag window has been significantly redesigned for a more professional look and better usability.

  • Updated search sources: VGMdb and Wikipedia lookups have been removed. Auto-Tag now uses AcoustID (audio fingerprinting), MusicBrainz (metadata), and iTunes (cover art and fallback) as its three search sources.
  • 5x2 result grid: Search results are now displayed in a 5-column by 2-row grid layout, showing more matches at a glance compared to the previous list view.
  • Cover art preview: Album artwork is displayed prominently in search results for easier identification.

Settings - Visual Overhaul

The Settings window has been redesigned to match the Auto-Tag window style.

  • Gold section headers: Settings categories now use gold-colored headers consistent with the overall application theme.
  • Improved reliability: Settings are now properly saved and restored on startup, including all cover image and tag retention options.

Sidebar - Refreshed Icons & Hover States

The sidebar navigation has been updated with new icons and interactive hover effects.

  • Golden hover icons: All sidebar buttons now display golden-tinted icon variants on hover, replacing the previous static appearance.
  • New sidebar items: Added Text Tools and CSV Import/Export buttons alongside the existing Auto-Tag and Settings buttons.
  • Streamlined navigation: The Open GitHub and Check Updates buttons have been removed. Updates are now handled through Arctisoft Hub.

File Search

A new search bar has been added to the file list panel.

  • Live filtering: Type in the search box (Ctrl+F) to instantly filter the file list by filename. Filtering is case-insensitive and updates as you type.
  • Clear behavior: Clearing the search box restores the full file list.

Installer Improvements

  • Redesigned installer: The installer has been completely rebuilt with a new dark-themed UI that matches the MetaEdit Plus design language.
  • Smaller footprint: Significantly reduced install size through optimized packaging and a lightweight uninstaller.
  • Arctisoft Hub integration: The installer can optionally download and install Arctisoft Hub alongside MetaEdit Plus.
  • Seamless upgrades: Automatically detects and removes previous installations before proceeding.

Bug Fixes

  • Cover art display: Fixed an issue where cover art thumbnails did not render with proper rounded corners.
  • Settings dropdowns: Fixed an issue where dropdowns in the Settings window would not close when scrolling.

Note: If you encounter any bugs or issues, please don't hesitate to open an issue. For any questions or to start a discussion, feel free to initiate a discussion on the GitHub repository.
