Release list
Inside Voice 1.5.5
- Fixed: an install that started with Whisper had no way to add Parakeet.
The Setup Assistant's "Speech engine" row went green without a Download
button. It now offers Parakeet when only Whisper is installed. Choosing
an engine that isn't downloaded yet in Advanced → Engine now opens the
Setup Assistant.
Install: open the DMG, drag Inside Voice to Applications, launch — or with
Homebrew: brew trust BillDX/tap && brew tap BillDX/tap && brew install --cask inside-voice.
Signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple: it opens without warnings.

Inside Voice 1.5.4
- Crash fix. Pressing the dictation key after the audio input had
changed (a headset or dock plugged or unplugged, AirPods connecting,
sleep/wake) could quit the app on the spot: the audio engine rejected a
stale input format with an exception Swift cannot catch. Every dictation
now starts a fresh audio engine, that call is fenced so a failure shows
"Mic unavailable" instead of quitting, and an input change during a
recording ends the dictation cleanly with what was heard so far (the
menu says why until the next dictation). The reason for a capture
failure goes to the unified log, category "audio"; still never any
audio or text. - Parakeet gets the decode watchdog whisper has had: a wedged decode aborts
after twice the clip length (never under a minute) instead of leaving the
app stuck on "Transcribing…" with the hotkey apparently dead. The whisper
watchdog is now also kept alive for the whole decode; Swift was free to
release it early.
Install: open the DMG, drag Inside Voice to Applications, launch — or with
Homebrew: brew trust BillDX/tap && brew tap BillDX/tap && brew install --cask inside-voice.

Inside Voice 1.5.3
- The hands-free lock (hold Right ⌥, tap Right ⌘, let go; tap Right ⌥ to
finish) is now shown where you'll see it: a second line in the menu, the
Setup Assistant (the Right ⌘ key is marked "lock" on the keyboard
diagram, with a tip below it, and pressing the two keys confirms it),
and the listening HUD in Modern, Glitter Text, and Top Secret
("⌘ to lock"). The README and User Guide now lead with both gestures. - macOS 14 and 15 fix. Earlier releases bundled speech-engine libraries
built for macOS 26. On macOS 14 (Sonoma) that kept the GPU (Metal) engine
from loading, so Whisper fell back to the CPU and ran many times slower
(Parakeet was unaffected). whisper.cpp and ggml are now built from source
for macOS 14, and the build refuses to package any part that needs a
newer macOS than the app supports. The bundle no longer includes
libomp; ggml uses its own thread pool, with the same speed.
Install: open the DMG, drag Inside Voice to Applications, launch — or with

Inside Voice 1.5.2
- New About Inside Voice menu item: version, copyright, a plain
statement of the license and the no-warranty terms, and links to the
license texts shipped inside the app. - Licensing: LICENSING.md now spells out attribution. Both licenses
require keeping the copyright and license notices; under the GPL option,
forks must also keep the author attribution in the About panel and say
that their version is modified (GPL section 7(b) and (c)). Every source
file now carries a copyright and SPDX license header.

Inside Voice 1.5.1
- The Mission: Danger! theme is now called Top Secret. If you had it
selected, it stays selected. - Top Secret's teletype is cheekier: every dictation gets a new silly
codename (COME IN SOGGY WAFFLE STOP, MIDNIGHT BISCUIT HAS THE FLOOR STOP)
that also goes on the folder, decoding reads INTERCEPT RECEIVED, the
sign-off is DELIVERED STOP SHRED AFTER READING STOP, and the final stamp
says CASE CLOSED.
Install: open the DMG, drag Inside Voice to Applications, launch — or with
Homebrew: brew trust BillDX/tap && brew tap BillDX/tap && brew install --cask inside-voice.

Inside Voice 1.5.0
- New theme: Mission: Danger! — a 1960s secret-agent case file. A
manila folder stamped TOP SECRET; a teletype prints the wire
telegram-style (AGENT ON THE WIRE STOP SPEAK NOW STOP) while a strip of
five-hole paper tape is punched in time with your voice, and the punch's
lamp shows red for recording, blinking for locked, amber for decoding.
While transcribing, the teletype hammers out five-letter cipher groups;
when the text lands, a worn red FILE CLOSED stamp slams onto the file. - Fixed: dictating into the Setup Assistant's test field did nothing,
though typing worked. Inside Voice lives in the menu bar with no main
menu, so nothing picked up the ⌘V it posts to deliver text into its own
window. It now has a hidden Edit menu, so dictation, ⌘C, ⌘V, ⌘A and ⌘Z
all work in that field. Dictating into other apps was never affected. - Fixed: with Glitter Text, starting a new dictation within about a second
of the last one landing left the HUD invisible for that whole dictation,
because the glitter bomb's fade-out kept running. A new dictation now
cancels it. - RetroComp '82's banner now reads
**** INSIDE VOICE '82 ****, matching
the theme's name. If you had the theme selected, it stays selected.
Install: open the DMG, drag Inside Voice to Applications, launch — or with
Homebrew: brew trust BillDX/tap && brew tap BillDX/tap && brew install --cask inside-voice.

Inside Voice 1.4.0
- First notarized release. Signed with a Developer ID under the hardened
runtime, notarized by Apple and stapled: the DMG opens with no Gatekeeper
warning, and the Homebrew cask no longer needs--no-quarantine. The
signing identity changed with this, so macOS asks for Microphone, Input
Monitoring, and Accessibility once more after updating; the Setup
Assistant opens to walk through it, and Launch at Login needs one click. - New theme: Glitter Text — early-2000s glitter graphics. Bubbly
sticker-edged letters filled with shimmering pink, gold, and lilac and
twinkling flecks, a holographic shine sweep, a pastel sky of drifting
sparkles. Headlines rotate (SPARKLE ON, SO SHINY, USE YOUR INSIDE
VOICE); LOCKED IN gets a glittery padlock; LOADING
gets three chasing sparkles; the meter is a glitter bar whose flecks
thicken with your voice. When the text lands, a glitter bomb of hearts,
stars, and dots bursts from the headline and the panel fades out. - Themes can now play a send-off after the transcript is inserted
(outroDuration/beginOutroonThemeHUDView); the HUD stays up for
that long, and a new utterance cancels it.--snapshot-hud … --state outrorenders the moment. - Themes trimmed: Starship, Punch Card, and Happy Cloud removed while
the theme set is revised before the first notarized release. Anyone who
had one selected falls back to Modern. Six themes remain: Modern, Green
Phosphor, Red Eye, RetroComp '82, Oscilloscope, Groovy. - Release pipeline: Developer ID signing with hardened runtime and a secure
timestamp, notarization and stapling of both the app and the DMG
(scripts/notarize.sh, wired intopublish-release.sh). The first
notarized build changes the app's signing identity, so macOS will ask
for Microphone, Input Monitoring, and Accessibility once more; the Setup
Assistant walks through it.
Install: open the DMG, drag Inside Voice to Applications, launch — or with
Homebrew: brew trust BillDX/tap && brew tap BillDX/tap && brew install --cask inside-voice.

Inside Voice 1.3.0
- Renamed to Inside Voice (was LocalWhisper). Models, vocabulary,
substitution rules, and settings move to the new locations automatically
on first launch (~/Library/Application Support/Inside Voice/,
defaults domaincom.thinkiac.InsideVoice). The bundle identifier
changed, so macOS sees a new app: re-grant Microphone, Input Monitoring,
and Accessibility once (the Setup Assistant opens to walk you through it)
and re-enable Launch at Login. Delete the old LocalWhisper.app. The retro
themes print the new name; developer env overrides are now
INSIDEVOICE_MODEL/INSIDEVOICE_PARAKEET_MODEL. - Homebrew tap:
brew trust BillDX/tap && brew tap BillDX/tap && brew install --cask inside-voice. - Public repo moved to github.com/BillDX/InsideVoice; old links redirect.
Install: open the DMG, drag Inside Voice to Applications, launch — or with
Homebrew: brew trust BillDX/tap && brew tap BillDX/tap && brew install --cask inside-voice. Builds are not yet notarized —
see the one-time Gatekeeper step.

LocalWhisper 1.2.0
- First public download release: DMG and docs at
github.com/BillDX/LocalWhisper.
The source repository stays private for now; LICENSING.md states the terms
it will publish under. - Licensing: LocalWhisper is now dual-licensed
EUPL-1.2 OR GPL-3.0-or-later(was GPL-3.0 only; purely additive — every existing
right is unchanged). New LICENSING.md (dual grant, commercial licensing,
trademark policy) and CONTRIBUTING.md (contributor license agreement,
Signed-off-bysign-off). The license texts now ship inside the app
bundle next to THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.md. - New theme: Happy Cloud — an 8-bit sprite: chunky 5-pt pixels, thick
outline, 2×2 eyes, an open mouth on the belly. A rainbow pours straight
down out of the mouth, bends through a quarter-arc pixel elbow, and runs
off left as a stepped river that is the level meter.
Blinks, splash droplets that scale with volume, pixel rainbow arch and a
smiling "digesting" face while transcribing, two-line 3×5 pixel-font
headlines ("SHARING / THE MAGIC"). - Think Pink and Rainbow Unicorn themes removed. Anyone who had either
selected falls back to Modern. Nine themes total.
Install: open the DMG, drag LocalWhisper to Applications, launch. Builds are
not yet notarized — see the one-time Gatekeeper step.
