Murmur is now open source under GNU GPL version 3 only (GPL-3.0-only). Version 0.2.4 (6) replaces the proprietary preview license and removes the separate contributor agreement for new contributions.

You can use, study, modify, share and sell Murmur under the GPL. Distributed modified versions must provide corresponding source and preserve the same freedoms for recipients. Private modifications do not have to be published. Dependencies and optional model weights retain their own licenses; the separate branding policy does not limit GPL use, forks or resale.

Download and install

Download Murmur-0.2.4-arm64.dmg, open it, and drag Murmur into Applications. Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 26 or later. The app is Developer ID signed and Apple-notarized. It preserves the signing requirement used in 0.2.3, preferences and downloaded models. Model downloads remain explicit and separate.

This is a licensing and distribution update. Dictation, microphone isolation, Quick Talk ending capture and focused-editor paste behavior are unchanged. This is still an early app; remaining hands-on checks are documented.

Source and build instructions

Both installer and source archive have attached SHA-256 checksum files. Source access is public and free, without an account. Keep the source directions beside the installer when redistributing it. Historical 0.2.3 and earlier installer files retain their original bundled terms.

Validation: default Swift checks pass, with three optional model/file checks skipped. Archive/export, Apple notarization, stapling, strict signatures, Gatekeeper, the 79 third-party notices/four package pins, bundled root documents and DMG verification pass. The DMG was installed and the native app's version and bundled GPL text were checked. No new human dictation retry is claimed for this licensing-only release.

Report a bug with the version/build, Mac/macOS, microphone, speech engine and reproduction steps. Remove private dictated text from reports.

Murmur 0.2.3 Public Preview: Reliable Editor Capture

@BitL8-ByteShort BitL8-ByteShort released this 20 Oct 23:25

Current open-source download: Murmur 0.2.4, under GPLv3, with source and build instructions. This historical installer keeps its original bundled preview terms.

Murmur 0.2.3 (5) fixes Quick Talk sessions that recognized your words but did not paste because the destination app had not exposed its focused text field yet.

Murmur now requests Electron editor accessibility when needed and retries briefly, for at most 300 ms. Ready text fields have no retry delay. The original app/window stays pinned; password fields, destination changes and cancellation still stop insertion. Microphone selection, the 120 ms ending capture and release-to-paste finalization are unchanged.

Download Murmur-0.2.3-arm64.dmg, open it and drag Murmur to Applications. Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 26 or later. The app is Developer ID signed and Apple-notarized. This update uses the same signing requirement as 0.2.2, preserving existing permissions and preferences. Speech models remain separate, explicit downloads.

Validation: 31 core checks and 40 app checks pass, including seven focused-editor recovery checks; three optional model/file checks were skipped. Release archive/export, notarization, stapling, strict signature, Gatekeeper, notice inventory and DMG integrity checks pass. Installed from the verified DMG; Chris retried Quick Talk in the affected Codex composer and confirmed successful paste. That retry is human confirmation; no automated Codex composer inspection is claimed.

Current open-source download: Murmur 0.2.4, under GPLv3, with source and build instructions. This historical installer keeps its original bundled preview terms.

Murmur 0.2.2 (4) is our first public preview: local voice dictation into the app you are using, with a compact bottom-center visualizer.

  • Quick Talk: hold your shortcut to speak, release to finish and paste, preserving a short ending buffer for the last syllable.
  • Keep Talking: listen between thoughts and finish manually or after the configured inactivity period.
  • Four responsive styles: Waveform, Aura, Aura Ring and Particle Wave. Automatic hiding, manual show/close and Always on visibility are separate controls.
  • Changeable hotkeys, microphone and language selection, local Apple Speech, Parakeet, Moonshine and Whisper Turbo, plus configurable TigerVNC paste keys.
  • Selected microphones use input-only capture, keeping system defaults and playback devices unchanged. No saved raw audio, disk transcript history, analytics or cloud fallback.

Download Murmur-0.2.2-arm64.dmg, open it and drag Murmur to Applications. Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 26 or later. The installer is Developer ID signed and Apple-notarized. Download a local model explicitly in Speech models. Enable Microphone and Accessibility for dictation and insertion; Apple Speech may also request speech permission. Updating from a development build can require renewing these permissions for the public signing identity.

Validation: default Swift checks pass (three opt-in model/file checks skipped), 79 notice documents verified against four pinned packages, Release archive/export, notarization, stapling, strict signatures, Gatekeeper and DMG integrity. Installed from the DMG, offline licenses open and preferences persist with Mic off. Built-in and USB capture with AirPods connected was established using the prior development signature; this Mac's new public-signature live capture/paste awaits renewed owner permissions. Audible Bluetooth continuity, physical shortcut checks and remote dictation remain human qualification items.

This is a free proprietary public preview. Source visibility does not grant an open-source license; first-party terms and dependency/model notices are included offline under Help → Licenses & Credits. Models are separate downloads and are not bundled. Report a bug without private transcripts or recordings.
