Release list
ps5-theme 1.60
Custom home-screen themes for jailbroken PS5 consoles on firmware 13.60 and below. Runs as an etaHEN plugin or on its own from any ELF loader. Tested on firmware 13.42, both with etaHEN 2.5B (unified build) and from PS5 Payload Manager.
Which file?
ps5-theme.plugin: for etaHEN. Copy it to/data/etaHEN/plugins/and turn on auto-start.ps5-theme.elf: the same program for PS5 Payload Manager or any ELF loader (port 9021). No etaHEN needed.ps5-theme-stop.elf: only for when the manager can't be reached. Start it from Payload Manager or a payload loader, then start ps5-theme again. It stops the plugin and leaves your theme on the screen. Put it in a folder of its own under/data/pldmgr/payloads/.
Updating
- From 1.23 or later: copy the new file over the old one (or put it in
/data/ps5-theme/update/). Within about 10 seconds the running plugin finds it and hands over, keeping your theme on the screen. No restart needed. - From 1.22 or older: copy the new file and restart the console once.
- If you keep a copy in PS5 Payload Manager, replace that one too, so an old version isn't started from there.
New in 1.60 (since 1.59)
- One progress display while a theme is applied. On the library, the banner shows the apply's progress, with its percentage on the right; the message in the corner no longer covers it. On the other pages the message shows as before.
- Docs: a photo of the colours from Edit colours on the console, in the Appearance themes guide.
Everything in 1.59 is included.
Checked
54 end-to-end tests on the host (full and emulated), and a PS5 with 13.42: an apply with the library open, and the update from 1.59 handing over by itself.

ps5-theme 1.59

New in 1.59 (since 1.57)
- Colours for the Appearance themes. In Appearance themes > Colours, Edit colours sets the colours of the Welcome widgets and the pills above them, the Control Center's backdrop and card, the button hints, the text in Settings and menus, and the accent, for every Appearance theme. Console's colours puts them back. For the widgets' colour, turn off Use System Appearance for Widgets in the Welcome hub's settings. A colour test and a panel test, each with a key, show what the other colours change.
- Help marks. A ? beside each setting, section, file and colour says what it changes. Point at it, or tap it on a phone.
- Progress you can follow. Anything that takes a while says what it is doing, with a percentage, including how much of an upload has reached the console. The bar only moves forward. Parts that wait for a large file from the console (the colours, the interface files) show what they are reading and how far it has got, with Try again if it can't be read.
- Faster colours and corner shapes. They read only the interface file that holds them, instead of all eight (about 82 MB).
- Fixes:
- After a Discard, a theme could keep a temporary upload file, and every apply then said "applied partly". Discard and Duplicate now leave such files out, and an apply ignores them and removes one that was cut off.
- "Applied partly" counted the wrong things ("107 of 27 folders"), and a long result was cut off mid-sentence. It now says what was skipped, with every hint in full.
- Two uploads at the same moment could fail with "empty or unreadable file" or "not a resource file (.rco) of this kind". Each upload now has its own temporary file.
- Changes to the interface file are made one at a time, so a quick second click no longer undoes the first.
- Changing a piece's placement shows its progress at once, and changes made in quick succession no longer race.
- Minor fixes.
Everything in 1.57 is included.
Checked
54 end-to-end tests on the host (full and emulated), and a PS5 with 13.42: the colour tests, the panel test and the colour editor, the help marks and progress, and a theme that applied partly after a Discard now applying in full. Tests on the console lists each test.

New in 1.57 (since 1.56)
- Rest mode is now said every time it matters for the Appearance artwork. After you attach a picture to the Control Center's bottom panel, the top-right piece or the home screen artwork, change one of their options, or reset one, the manager says to apply the theme and then put the console in rest mode and wake it. Applying the theme says it too, in the manager and in a console notification.
- The Placement hints are correct. The tooltip no longer says options apply only when a picture is attached (they apply at once), and the section's note tells what to do if one doesn't take effect: change the option and attach the picture again.
- README: a step-by-step guide to changing the bottom panel, the top-right piece and the home screen artwork, how each is made, how it depends on the anniversary Appearance themes' textures, and the requirements.
Everything in 1.56 (the Appearance themes' textures, kept originals and the fit setting) is included.
Checked
53 end-to-end tests on the host (full and emulated), and a PS5 with 13.42: the reminders after attaching, changing and resetting a piece and after applying. The README's Tests on the console lists each test.

New in 1.56 (since 1.55)
Appearance themes
- Replace the artwork of the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, 3 and 4 Appearance themes (Settings > Appearance and Sound): the Control Center's bottom panel, the top-right corner piece by the clock, and the home screen's artwork. In the editor, switch on Appearance themes.
- Placement for each piece: fill, fill with padding, fit or stretch, measured from the screen's edge the piece sits against. The corner piece can keep the clock and the search and settings icons clear, so a white picture doesn't hide the clock.
- See-through pictures work. A PNG or WebP with transparency keeps its see-through parts. The textures are made in the browser in the console's own format and checked against the system file byte for byte before they are accepted.
- They depend on the anniversary themes' textures in
/system/vsh_assetbeing on the console, and show only while that Appearance theme is selected, after rest mode. The README's Appearance themes section tells how each piece is made and what is required.
Originals kept, options changed later
- The theme keeps the original of every picture and texture you attach (never applied to the console; one copy for all sizes). Change a piece's placement, or the fit setting for every picture, and the textures are made again at once from the originals, with nothing attached twice. Pieces attached before are read back from their texture.
- Keep original pictures can be switched off per theme to save space, and the kept ones removed with one click. The editor shows what they take.
Fixes
- A theme made before 1.56 with a page-made background is no longer reported as "applied partly": the plugin writes the texture again with the system file's frame header. Remembered file checks are now tagged with a revision of the rules, so a later version never trusts an earlier one's refusal.
Developer tool
ps5-assetwatch.elf(build it fromtools/assetwatch) lists the files the home screen and the web renderer map over two minutes, read-only. It is how the Appearance textures were located.
Checked
53 end-to-end tests on the host (full and emulated), the texture and font checks fuzzed with no findings, all 28 of the console's own Appearance and background textures accepted by the new checks, and a PS5 with 13.42: the Control Center's bottom panel, the corner piece and the home artwork with placement, padding and the clock band; options changed later, the fit setting and the switch for keeping originals were reported working on the last builds. The README's Tests on the console lists each test.

New in 1.55 (since 1.53)
Fonts
- Replace the console's text fonts with a TrueType or OpenType font of your own: the home screen's and Settings' text, in the Latin alphabet and in Arabic, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and Korean. In the editor, switch on Fonts.
- Use one font for all Latin interface text changes the Latin text in one step. The fonts marked Home screen are the ones the home screen draws with: on a 13.42 console it uses only the Light and Bold weights, so changing the regular and medium ones shows nothing there (web pages use them).
- The change shows after you put the console in rest mode and wake it: the manager and a console notification say so.
- Only the home screen gets the font. A font goes into the home screen's own view of the fonts folder and comes out of it the moment the home screen closes for rest mode. Games read the same folder, so the real folder is never changed.
- Every font is checked before it is accepted. It must be a whole TrueType or OpenType font, with the tables every font needs, glyph counts and metrics that agree, and the Latin letters, digits and punctuation text needs. Font collections (
.ttc), web fonts (WOFF), damaged or cut-short files, and symbol fonts are refused with a plain reason. If the home screen keeps restarting with a font, the plugin takes the theme down by itself.
Corner shapes (1.54)
- In Interface icons, change how round the interface's buttons, switches, slider handles, menus, tooltips, tags and other parts are, one by one (0 makes a part square-cornered). The editor accepts only the console's own list of names with plain numbers, and nothing else in the file may change.
- Not changed: the home screen's tiles keep their shape, and the overall multiplier in the list showed no visible change. The tiles' corners are set in the home screen's own program, not in a file a theme can swap.
Developer tool
ps5-fontscan.elf(build it fromtools/fonts) lists the font files each process has open or mapped, read-only. It is how the plugin's author found which fonts the home screen draws with.
Checked
47 end-to-end tests on the host (full and emulated), the font check fuzzed (7.3 million inputs, no findings), and a PS5 with 13.42: a replaced font showing on the home screen after rest mode, and the scan of the fonts each process uses. The README's Tests on the console lists each test, and Fonts tells how it works.

New in 1.53 (since 1.30)
Game and app icons
- Change the icon, background and logo of any installed game or app: PS5 and PS4 games, homebrew, and games whose tile shows PlayStation Network artwork. Each picture is written into every file that holds it, in exactly the console's format (PNG, BC7 and DXT1 textures, and the WebP and JPEG files the console keeps under
.pngnames). - The Game Library and the backgrounds show the new pictures as soon as the theme is applied. The home screen's icons change once you put the console in rest mode and wake it. The manager and a console notification remind you.
- Games and apps keep starting. The pictures go only into the home screen's own view, and the plugin takes them out the moment the home screen closes for rest mode, even in the middle of an apply. An overlay left there was what stopped every game and app from starting (error CE-105733-9) in earlier test builds.
- The buttons say what each picture is (Change icon, Change background, Change logo) and where it appears.
Interface icons and home screen tiles
- Interface icons: replace the pictures the console draws from its interface file (search, settings, the Control Center and more), each written in exactly the console's format. Number vector icons and Number all show which picture is where.
- Home screen tiles: change the icons of the console's own tiles (PlayStation Store, Game Library, Media tab and others) and the background shown while one is selected, with a numbered test.
Home music
- After applying a theme with music, the manager and a console notification say how to hear it: highlight a game or app that plays its own music, let it play, then go back to the home screen.
More reliable
- The manager comes back by itself after rest mode. Rest mode could leave the plugin's web server deaf for good; it now opens its socket again.
- Starting the plugin again always works, even when the running copy doesn't answer: the new copy finds it and asks it to hand over.
ps5-theme-stop.elfstops the plugin without a restart, keeping the theme.- An overlay still in use is never forced off; the new theme or the system's own files go on top until it's free. Forcing it off had broken the home screen's views and made it restart about once a minute.
- The crash guard also catches a slow restart loop (5 restarts in 10 minutes) and no longer mistakes old sandboxes for restarts.
- Overlays are taken out by what the console's mount table shows, so one missing from the plugin's records can't be left behind.
Checked
46 end-to-end tests on the host, the parsers fuzzed again, and a set of console tests run on a PS5 with 13.42: rest-mode cycles with games and apps started each time, rest mode in the middle of an apply, theme switches, Restore stock, a console restart, updates over a running copy, and the stop tool. The README's Tests on the console lists each one, and Changing game and app icons safely tells what it took.

ps5-theme 1.30
Restarts and theme switches are now fast, updating is more reliable, and a few bugs found in a review and by fuzzing are fixed.
Faster
- Putting your theme back after a restart takes about a second (it took about 37). The console's storage can't share files between folders, so the theme's folder is a full copy. That copy is now kept and reused as long as nothing has changed, including after a restart.
- Switching back to the theme you used just before is as quick: its folder is kept too.
- A theme you haven't used just before still takes about 20 seconds to prepare. The console now shows how far it has got ("Preparing the theme: 120 of 300 MB… 40%").
Updating
- After a restart, if etaHEN starts an older version while a newer one waits in the update folder, the newer one now takes over reliably. Before, both could stop, leaving no plugin running until you started it again.
- An update takes over within about a second.
Fixes
- A file that failed to save to disk was left open.
- A crafted WAV file could make the manager hang while checking it.
- A crafted texture could make the plugin allocate up to 256 MB before rejecting it.
- The README now says plainly what the file checks cover and what they don't.
Updating from 1.23 or later: put ps5-theme.elf (or the .plugin) in /data/ps5-theme/update/ (or over the old file in etaHEN's plugin folder). The running plugin hands over within about 10 seconds and your theme stays on screen. To make restarts fast too, also replace /data/etaHEN/plugins/ps5-theme.plugin, or the .elf you start from PS5 Payload Manager.
Tested on a PS5 on 13.42 with etaHEN 2.5B: updates from 1.28, 1.29 and 1.24, switching themes both ways, and restarts with an older and with the new plugin.

ps5-theme 1.24
Custom home-screen themes for jailbroken PS5 consoles on firmware 13.60 and below. Runs as an etaHEN plugin or on its own from any ELF loader. Tested on firmware 13.42, both with etaHEN 2.5B (unified build) and from PS5 Payload Manager.
Which file?
Both contain the same program:
ps5-theme.elf: for PS5 Payload Manager or any ELF loader (port 9021). No etaHEN needed. Put it in a folder under/data/pldmgr/payloads/and launch it, or add it to the manager's autoload list.ps5-theme.plugin: for etaHEN. Copy it to/data/etaHEN/plugins/and turn on auto-start.
You can set up both as a backup for each other. Only one copy ever runs: a second copy steps aside, or takes over if it's newer.
Updating
- From 1.23: copy the new file over the old one (or put it in
/data/ps5-theme/update/). Within about 10 seconds the running plugin finds it and hands over, keeping your theme on the screen. - From 1.22 or older: copy the new file and restart the console once.
New in 1.24
- Runs without etaHEN. Start
ps5-theme.elffrom PS5 Payload Manager or any ELF loader. It does everything it does under etaHEN: the web manager, the Themes tile, putting your theme back, and console notifications. - Updates from a plain
.elf. Every build carries its version inside the program, so a newerps5-theme.elfis recognised as well as a.plugin. The plugin looks in etaHEN's plugin folder, PS5 Payload Manager's payload folders and/data/ps5-theme/update/. - Messages no longer assume etaHEN is installed.
Also in recent versions
- 1.23: updates load by themselves; the theme stays through a plugin restart; progress notifications on the console.
- 1.22: the theme stays after rest mode.

ps5-theme 1.23
Custom home-screen themes for jailbroken PS5 consoles on firmware 13.60 and below, as an etaHEN plugin. Tested on firmware 13.42 with etaHEN 2.5B (unified build).
Install
- Copy
ps5-theme.pluginto/data/etaHEN/plugins/on the console. - Turn on auto-start: create an empty file
/data/etaHEN/plugins/ps5-theme.plugin.auto_start, or turn it on in the etaHEN Toolbox plugin list. - Start it from the Toolbox, or jailbreak again.
- Open the Themes tile, or
http://<console-ip>:8095from a phone or computer.
Coming from 1.22 or older: copy the new file over the old one and restart the console once. Older versions can't start a new version by themselves.
New in 1.23
- Updates load by themselves. Copy a newer
ps5-theme.pluginover the old one. Within about 10 seconds the running plugin finds it, starts it through etaHEN's ELF loader and hands over to it. Your theme stays on the screen the whole time. No Toolbox and no restart needed, which matters after rest mode, when the Toolbox is often unavailable. (From 1.23 on.) - The theme stays through a plugin restart. When the plugin restarts without a reboot (an update, or etaHEN's Stop), it carries on with the theme already on the screen instead of taking it down and applying it again.
- Progress on the console. Applying shows console notifications: "Applying 'Name'…" (or "Putting 'Name' back…" after a reboot), the current step and percentage during a long apply (at most every 8 seconds), and the result.
- Only one copy of the plugin runs at a time. A copy that isn't newer leaves the running one alone.
Also in recent versions
- 1.22: the theme stays after rest mode. Apps the console restarts get the theme within a second.

ps5-theme 1.22
Updating from an earlier version: replace the .plugin file and restart the plugin. Your themes are kept, and an open manager page reloads itself.
Without etaHEN, send ps5-theme.elf to an ELF loader (port 9021) after each jailbreak.
New in 1.22
- The theme stays after rest mode. After rest mode, some of the home screen's apps restart and see the stock files again. The plugin now notices this within a second and puts the theme back for them, without re-applying and without the stock flash. If something still shows stock, Re-apply brings it back at once.
Highlights
- Themes for the background, icons, home music, system sounds, fonts, animations, video and other images, built from any picture or audio file and fitted to each system file's exact format.
- A home music editor: choose the part of the song, an optional loop part, the play order, how the joints sound and the loudness, and hear it before applying.
- Save and Discard, preview pictures on every theme card, export and import as
.zip. - Clear progress while applying, and the applied theme is put back every time etaHEN starts.
- The system is never written: themes are read-only overlays held in memory, and every file is checked against the system file it replaces.
See the README for the full guide, how it works and the challenges behind it.
