GPU Selector v1.3.2

A release about MMOs, games you cannot start yourself, and games that already have their own ReShade. GPU Selector can now start a game through its own launcher and wait while you log in, pick the GPU for games that run on DXVK, start Battle.net games the way Blizzard expects, ask what to do when a game has its own ReShade, and find games installed outside the stores. Add-ons can be added any way they come, and the game library got a real progress bar, better artwork and a reworked Custom Game Folders.

MMOs and Game Launchers

  • Start a game through its launcher. Right-click a game, Set Launcher.... Launch then starts the launcher; the GPU choice, HDR, ReShade and watching for the game to close all still target the game itself. The card shows "starts with ..."
  • Launchers are suggested. Set Launcher lists the launchers your Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts start, plus any launcher or patcher exe next to the game, with Browse for the rest. It explains that the launcher is often in a different folder from the game, and that a mod client in the game folder is not the launcher
  • Up to an hour to log in. With a launcher set, GPU Selector waits up to an hour for the game to start, in every mode: normal launch, Inject, Proxy, VK, Launcher Injection and Take Over. The waits were two to five minutes before
  • Known MMO launchers. GPU Selector recognises the launchers of The Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy XIV, Black Desert, City of Heroes Homecoming, Warhammer Online: Return of Reckoning, Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Lord of the Rings Online, EVE Online, Neverwinter, Star Trek Online, RIFT, Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis, Tibia, Mortal Online 2, Ultima Online Outlands, Star Wars Galaxies Legends, WildStar (NexusForever), Warframe, RuneScape and Old School RuneScape (Jagex Launcher), EverQuest and EverQuest II (LaunchPad), Dungeons & Dragons Online, Asheron's Call private servers, MapleStory and Mabinogi (Nexon Launcher), and Blade & Soul NEO, AION 2, Aion and Lineage II (NCSOFT PURPLE)
  • Asked once for games nobody listed. The first time you launch a game from outside the big stores, GPU Selector looks for a launcher that clearly belongs to it and asks: Use This Launcher, Start the Game Itself or Choose Another.... Private servers with their own Launcher.exe or <server>_patcher.exe are covered this way
  • Games installed through their own launcher are found. Windows often lists only the launcher (for example "TERA Europe Classic+ Launcher"), so the game was never in the library. The scan now reads the launcher's own settings, finds the game, and adds it with its launcher already set. Your own custom cards are kept separate
  • Custom cards get their GPU choice when they start through a launcher. It was never applied to custom cards on a normal launch

Battle.net

  • Blizzard games start through Battle.net, the way Blizzard expects: Battle.net.exe --exec="launch_uid ...". World of Warcraft, WoW Classic, Diablo IV, Diablo III, Diablo II: Resurrected and the others are recognised from their Windows install entries. Tick Direct to start the exe yourself instead

DXVK Games

  • DXVK is recognised by the DLL itself. A DXVK dxgi.dll or d3d11.dll next to a game means it draws through Vulkan, even when the exe itself only lists DirectX 9 (TERA reaches DirectX 11 through d3dx11_43.dll). ReShade then loads through Vulkan (VK mode) automatically; a DirectX hook on top of DXVK never shows up
  • Pick the GPU for a DXVK game. DXVK chooses its GPU from dxvk.conf, not from Windows, so the GPU dropdown did nothing. Now GPU Selector sets the dxvk.deviceFilter line for that launch and puts your own line back when the game closes. The dialog fits each case: a file that picks another GPU, a file with no GPU line, or no dxvk.conf at all (one is made for the launch and deleted afterwards). Always for This Game stops the question
  • Your file is always put back. A copy is saved first. If GPU Selector or the PC stops, the next start restores it. Other lines you edit while the game runs are kept. A GPU line left over from a launch that never reached the game is removed before the next launch
  • Keep My File leaves dxvk.conf alone and does not narrow Vulkan to another GPU either, so the game can still start

Games That Block ReShade

  • Diablo IV explains itself. Diablo IV closes when unsigned software such as ReShade is loaded (Blizzard's 3.1.0 patch). Launching it with ReShade now shows a dialog: Launch Without ReShade, or Try Standard ReShade without GPU Selector's add-ons. Online play turns off depth in Standard ReShade, so 3D does not work online. A custom version for this game is planned
  • The Standard (Anti-Cheat Safe) build keeps depth. It loads no add-ons, so ReShade's built-in Generic Depth now stays on with it. It was switched off, which left Standard launches with no depth for 3D

Games With Their Own ReShade

  • Your own ReShade is found again. ReShade 6.6 stores its name under a language code GPU Selector never checked, so a ReShade already in the game folder went unseen and a second one was injected on top. It stopped itself (code 1114), and GPU Selector then removed its add-on folder while the game kept running
  • Three choices, in every mode. When a game already has ReShade (in the game folder, or through ReShade's global Vulkan install), Inject, Proxy, Launcher Injection and VK mode all stop and ask: Cancel, Use My ReShade, or Take Over This Launch. The old Launch Anyway is gone: two ReShades cannot run in one game, and which one survived depended on timing
  • Take Over This Launch. Your ReShade DLL is renamed aside for that launch and put back when the game closes. In Proxy mode ours goes in its place and yours returns once ours is removed. A global Vulkan ReShade is switched off for that launch only and back on afterwards. If GPU Selector is closed first, everything is put back the next time it starts. Nothing of yours is deleted
  • Your global Vulkan ReShade is switched back on. Earlier versions switched it off for every Vulkan launch and never switched it back on. Now only the setting GPU Selector wrote is removed when the game closes
  • Use My ReShade now loads your add-ons too. ReShade reads a single add-on folder, so pointing it at GPU Selector's used to hide the add-ons you keep next to the game's exe. Yours are now copied in beside ours for that launch, and when both have the same add-on (matched by what it is, not by file name), yours is used
  • Use My ReShade works with a global Vulkan ReShade, adding GPU Selector's add-ons and shaders the same way it does for a ReShade in the game folder
  • Fixed a crash with Use My ReShade and Generic Depth Mod. ReShade's built-in Generic Depth stayed on alongside it; it is now switched off for that launch, and your setting is restored afterwards

Game Library

  • Custom Game Folders, reworked after how Playnite, Steam and LaunchBox handle games outside the stores:
    • Adding a folder shows the games found there first. Tick what goes in the library
    • Games you untick stay out of later scans. Each folder has Choose Games to change that, and shows how many games it holds
    • Folders such as C:\Games, D:\Games or GOG Games that exist on your PC are offered as one-click buttons
    • From Start Menu lists the programs in your Start Menu that are not in GPU Selector yet, likely games first, so games installed anywhere can be added with a tick
    • The folder is scanned right away, without a separate Rescan
  • A real scan progress bar. One bar in the footer covers the whole scan: each store, the icons, game details from Steam and the artwork downloads. It no longer stops and restarts, or sits at 100% while game details still load
  • Artwork when Steam's store is blocked. On some networks and VPN exits Steam's store refuses every search, so games without a Steam id lost their artwork. GPU Selector now asks Steam's community site instead and still gets the images from Steam
  • Missing artwork comes back. The artwork cleanup could run during the startup scan and delete pictures of games not added yet (Diablo IV lost its artwork this way). It now waits for the scan to finish, and a picture whose file is missing is looked up again
  • Better icons. Unity's newer logo and the stock CD icon that starter programs use are recognised as placeholders, so the game's Steam icon is used (Meat Train, Shogo: Mobile Armor Division). A launcher with only Windows' blank program icon now shows the icon of the exe named after the game (Assetto Corsa)
  • Steam game details in English. Genres were shown in the language of the network you were on
  • Bonus content is no longer picked as the game. Steam games with a bonus app, such as Silent Hill: Townfall's Bonus Application, launched the bonus app instead of the game. Bonus, extras, artbook and soundtrack apps are now recognised by their folder, file name and description

Add-ons

  • Add add-ons any way they come. Drop them on Add Custom Add-on, Browse to them, or paste a GitHub link:

    • one add-on file on its own
    • several files at once: the add-on with its .ini, shaders or textures
    • a .zip or .7z, including archives inside archives
    • a GitHub repository: its latest release, or the add-on files kept in the repository when there is no release

You are warned first that add-ons from unknown sources are unsafe. Only add-ons, .ini files, shaders and textures are kept. Programs such as a dxgi.dll packed in for manual installs, and ReShade's own settings files, are left out. RAR files are named and explained rather than failing silently

  • Every new add-on asks which game it is for, and is turned on for that game. Other games can still use it from Manage Add-on Games

  • Drop an .ini, shader or texture on an add-on's card to add it to that add-on. Loose files with no add-on ask which add-on they belong to

  • Shaders and textures that come with an add-on load with it, only in games where the add-on is on

  • Dropping a newer copy updates the card instead of creating a second one. A file that could be either of two add-ons with the same name asks which one it replaces

  • Add-ons that share a name get their own card. ShaderTogglerAdvanced ships as ShaderToggler.addon64 and was hidden as the official ShaderToggler, and could have overwritten it. It now gets its own card under the name you give it, and in a game where it is on, the official ShaderToggler stays off, since ReShade can load only one of the two

  • Per-game add-on settings. When a package brings an .ini, such as ShaderToggler.ini, GPU Selector asks which game it is for and puts it next to that game's exe. A game's own .ini is only replaced if you say so, and is kept as a backup

  • Dialogs no longer open behind the Add-ons window

  • Add-on cards look like shader repo cards. An add-on from GitHub shows the author's avatar, the colours from it, "by author" with the repository's description, and a GitHub link. Add-ons added from a file can be linked with Link GitHub

  • Game lists you can search. The game picker in the add-on dialogs has a search box: type part of a name and press Enter

  • Each add-on card says where it is on ("On in: ...")

  • Two different add-ons with the same file name (two authors' HUD.addon64) no longer overwrite each other. The second one gets its own card, and the name box suggests a free name. Typing a name that is already in use asks for another

  • ReShade's own ReShade.fxh and ReShadeUI.fxh inside add-on packages are left out; ReShade already has them, and packages often carry old copies

Fixes

  • HDR or brightness could stay changed when a game was launched again through its launcher before it started
  • A launcher you removed came back on the next scan
  • A folder clicked twice could be added twice
  • Games you unticked in a folder with accented letters in its path (Überland) came back on the next scan
  • Opening a folder's game list or From Start Menu while a scan was running could crash; it now asks you to try again when the scan finishes
