Second Hunt Beta 2 (0.2.0-beta)

Beta 2 brings online play with crossplay between Android and Windows, up to 8 players, and new characters, suits and arenas made from your own Metroid Prime discs.

You need your own Metroid Prime Hunters (USA) ROM, version 1.0 or 1.1. Neither download contains any game data.

New in Beta 2

• Online play (MULTIPLAYER > ONLINE PLAY): FIND GAME searches in the modes you pick and groups up to 8 players, then everyone votes for an arena. BROWSE GAMES lists open games, and CREATE hosts your own (open to anyone, friends only, or by invite).
  • Crossplay: Android and Windows players play together in the same games.
  • Friends by name (NAME#tag), by trading friend codes like the original, or from your recent players. Parties search together.
  • Voice chat (push to talk on R3 or the TALK button, always on, or off) and text chat in the lobby and in a match (hold Select for quick messages, tap it to type).
  • Tap any name for that player's license, your record against them, and MUTE, BLOCK or REPORT.
  • If the host leaves, another player takes over. If your connection drops, you rejoin the match.
  • Online play is for ages 13 and up. The rules and the privacy notice are in the game (the line at the bottom of OPTIONS) and in the repo's docs.
• Up to 8 players in every mode, in local, LAN and online matches, with any mix of people and bots. LAN now has every mode.
• IMPORT GAMES (SECOND HUNT SETTINGS > IMPORT GAMES) makes extra content in the app from your own Metroid Prime, Echoes, Corruption or Trilogy disc. The disc is read where it is, never copied or uploaded.
  • HD Samus suits and morph balls (SECOND HUNT SETTINGS > SAMUS SUIT), and an HD Samus behind the menus
  • TROOPER (from Metroid Prime): four skins, a wall cling and a Scout Drone alt form
  • DARK SAMUS (from Echoes, or Corruption on the Metroid Prime Trilogy disc)
  • Six Echoes arenas with their music and Echoes movement: Sidehopper Station, Spires, Crossfire Chaos, Pipeline, Spider Complex and Shooting Gallery
  • Players who haven't imported a character still see it, as the closest hunter in matching colors.
• The Pirate Blaster, a new pickup, and new item spots in many arenas, both under ADVANCED > EXTRA PICKUPS. EXTRA CHARACTERS and EXTRA ARENAS can be turned off too.
• Weapon ring: hold L2 and point with the right stick, even while moving. A quick tap of L2 zooms.
• REPLAYS: your last ten matches, with speed control, skipping, any player's view or a free camera.
• The Hunter License, with stats and the original's unlocks (or SECOND HUNT SETTINGS > UNLOCKS for everything at once).
• Both endings with the credits roll, and the MOVIES gallery unlocks as you see each movie.
• Touch: the right half of the screen works like the DS touch screen (double tap to jump, drag to roll the morph ball, flick to boost).
• LAN and online matches are always in first person.
• RECOMP SETTINGS is now called SECOND HUNT SETTINGS.

Install

• Already on Beta 1.3: SECOND HUNT SETTINGS > UPDATES > CHECK (from the main menu) installs Beta 2 and keeps your saves and settings.
• Windows: download SecondHunt-0.2.0-beta-windows-x64.zip below, unzip it anywhere and open SecondHunt.exe. If Windows says it protected your PC, click "More info", then "Run anyway". Unzipping over an older version is fine; saves and settings live in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Second Hunt.
• Android: download SecondHunt-0.2.0-beta.apk below and open it on your device. It installs over any earlier beta and keeps your saves. Voice chat asks for the microphone the first time you use it.

Second Hunt Beta 1.3 (0.1.3-beta)

Beta 1.3 adds an updater. From this version on, Second Hunt can update itself.

You need your own Metroid Prime Hunters (USA) ROM, version 1.0 or 1.1. Neither download contains any game data.

New in Beta 1.3

• RECOMP SETTINGS > UPDATES. Press CHECK and Second Hunt asks GitHub whether a newer version is out. If one is, it downloads it, checks it, and installs it over this one, keeping your saves and settings.
  • It goes online only when you press CHECK, never on its own.
  • It only installs a release signed with the project's update key, and only if the download matches the signed size and SHA-256.
  • It works from the main menu, not from a paused campaign or match.
  • Android: the first update asks you to allow Second Hunt to install apps, then Android shows its own confirm screen.
  • Windows: the game swaps its files and restarts by itself. Keep the Second Hunt folder somewhere you can write to (not Program Files).
• Every release from now on carries a signed update file (SecondHunt-<version>-update.txt). The updater reads it; you don't need to download it.

Beta 1.2 and older don't have the button, so install Beta 1.3 by hand once, as before. Everything else is the same as Beta 1.2; Beta 1.1's notes have the full list of what's new and the known issues.

Second Hunt Beta 1.2 (0.1.2-beta)

A small update to Beta 1.1: anything on the menus that isn't in yet now tells you so, instead of doing nothing.

New in Beta 1.2

• ERASE ALL DATA, RUMBLE PAK, the SURROUND and HEADPHONES speaker modes, and the movies in the MOVIES gallery show a WORK IN PROGRESS box (the game's own message box) with a check to close it.

Everything else is the same as Beta 1.1; its notes have the full list of what's new, the install steps and the known issues.

Second Hunt Beta 1.1 (0.1.1-beta)

Beta 1.1 brings Second Hunt to Windows, and lets you change your controls on both Windows and Android.

You need your own Metroid Prime Hunters (USA) ROM, version 1.0 or 1.1. Neither download contains any game data. On first launch the app asks for the ROM and unpacks it into its own folder.

New in Beta 1.1

• Windows version. The same game as on Android, running the same code, with keyboard and mouse (MphRead's own PC controls) or a controller. LAN matches work between Windows and Android in any mix.
• Change your controls. OPTIONS > CONTROLS (also RECOMP SETTINGS > CONTROLS and the gunship's OPTIONS): pick a function, then press its new button. X on a function adds a second button. This works for controllers on both platforms, and for the keyboard and mouse on Windows.
• Easier weapon switching. D-pad left / right step through the weapons you have, D-pad up is the scan visor (Power Beam in a match) and D-pad down is missiles. On Windows the mouse wheel steps through weapons too.
• Options save as soon as you change them, so the options pages don't have a SAVE button anymore.
• MODS and RECOMP SETTINGS are now on the game's OPTIONS page, where the Nintendo WFC stats option was.
• The music QUALITY setting is in RECOMP SETTINGS too. In the pause menu the paused music plays while it's selected, so you can hear the change.
• The press that closes a dialog no longer also jumps or fires.

Windows

• Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with OpenGL 3.3 or newer.
• Download SecondHunt-0.1.1-beta-windows-x64.zip below, unzip it anywhere and open SecondHunt.exe.
• The app isn't signed with a paid certificate, so Windows may say it protected your PC. Click "More info", then "Run anyway".
• For LAN matches, Second Hunt has to be allowed through Windows Firewall. Windows asks the first time you host or join, but the prompt can hide behind a full-screen window. If other devices can't see your match, go to Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall, add SecondHunt.exe and tick both Private and Public.
• Saves and settings are kept in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Second Hunt.

Android

• Android 8.0 or newer, with OpenGL ES 3.0. A controller is recommended; touch controls can be turned on in RECOMP SETTINGS > touch controls.
• Download SecondHunt-0.1.1-beta.apk below and open it on your device. It installs over Beta 1 and keeps your saves.

Known issues

• Beating Gorea ends on a "mission complete" screen; the real endings and credits aren't in yet.
• LAN play: 2 players, Battle only; item pickups may not stay in sync.
• OPTIONS > AUDIO: SURROUND and HEADPHONES sound the same as STEREO for now.
• No rumble yet, and gyro aim is Android only for now.
• Only tested on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 hardware so far on Android (AYN Odin 2 Portal, Galaxy S23). Please report how it runs on your device or PC.
• Crashes: RECOMP SETTINGS > crash log > SHARE (OPEN on Windows) gets you the newest crash report. Please attach it to an issue.

Second Hunt Beta 1 (0.1.0-beta)

The first public beta of Second Hunt: Metroid Prime Hunters rebuilt as a native Android app, running from your own copy of the game.

You need your own Metroid Prime Hunters (USA) ROM, version 1.0 or 1.1. The app contains no game data; on first launch it asks you to pick the ROM file and unpacks it into the app's private storage.

What's in Beta 1

• The full campaign with the game's own title screen and menus (rebuilt from your ROM)
• Multiplayer: matches against bots on one device, plus LAN matches between two devices on the same Wi-Fi (2 players, Battle mode, experimental). Main menu > MULTIPLAYER.
• The game's OPTIONS > AUDIO page: volumes, sound test and music test, plus a music QUALITY setting (the DS sound, the DS sound without clicks and clipping, or smoother HQ) that switches mid-song.
• Widescreen, a pause map, optional gyro aim, optional on-screen touch controls. See Options > RECOMP SETTINGS.

Requirements

• Android 8.0 or newer, OpenGL ES 3.0.
• A controller is recommended; touch controls can be turned on in RECOMP SETTINGS > touch controls (AUTO shows them when no controller is connected).

Known issues

• Beating Gorea ends on a "mission complete" screen; the real ending and credits aren't in yet.
