Backup & Restore

Your writing is important. DasBook makes it easy to save a complete backup of your universe and restore it if anything goes wrong.

Exporting a Backup

1. Go to Settings > Publishing
2. Click Export .dasbook
3. The backup file saves to your Downloads folder

The backup is a single .dasbook file (a compressed archive) containing everything in your universe:

• All your books, chapters, scenes, and documents
• All character profiles, timelines, and research
• Your codex (world facts and rules)
• All snapshots (saved versions of your documents)
• Your corkboard layouts
• Your AI rules and publication settings

Restoring from a Backup

1. Go to Settings > Publishing
2. Click Import .dasbook
3. Select your backup file
4. DasBook creates a new universe with all your content restored

The imported universe gets "(imported)" added to its name so it doesn't confuse with the original. You can rename it afterward.

Important: Importing creates a brand new universe — it doesn't overwrite anything. Your existing universes are safe.

Snapshots (Document-Level Backups)

In addition to full universe backups, DasBook saves snapshots of individual documents:

• Click Snapshot in the editor footer to save the current state of a document
• Click History to see all snapshots and restore any previous version
• DasBook also creates automatic snapshots before applying any AI edit

Think of snapshots as "undo points" for a single document, while the .dasbook export is a full backup of everything.

Tips

• Export before major changes. About to restructure your book? Export first.
• Export before publishing. Each publish bumps the version — a backup at each version gives you a clean recovery point.
• Keep backups somewhere safe. Copy the .dasbook file to a USB drive, cloud storage, or email it to yourself.
