SkyDoom v0.1.0-beta

The first public beta of SkyDoom - DOOM running inside Skyrim through an
SKSE/CommonLibSSE-NG bridge and a modified Chocolate Doom runtime.

This is an early beta intended to get the project into other people's hands
and gather compatibility/bug feedback.

Tested configuration

  • Skyrim runtime 1.7.104.0 (Steam)
  • SKSE 2.3.1
  • Steam DOOM + DOOM II installation using the current AppID 2280 layout
  • Windows 10/11

Other Skyrim runtimes and non-Steam DOOM layouts have not yet been validated.

Requirements / game ownership

SkyDoom does not include Skyrim or DOOM game files.

To use the beta you need your own legitimate supported copies of:

  • Skyrim Special Edition / Anniversary Edition
  • DOOM + DOOM II
  • SKSE for the supported Skyrim runtime

Steam DOOM + DOOM II:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2280/DOOM__DOOM_II/

At the time of the v0.1.0-beta release, DOOM + DOOM II is on sale for £3.19
in the UK
. Steam pricing and sales can change.

SkyDoom automatically discovers the player's own legitimate DOOM.WAD from
their Steam libraries, so there is no need to manually copy DOOM WAD files
into the mod.

Installation

  1. Install the correct SKSE version for Skyrim runtime 1.7.104.0.
  2. Download SkyDoom-v0.1.0-beta.zip from the Assets section below.
  3. Install the ZIP with Vortex or Mod Organizer 2.
  4. Make sure your supported Steam copy of DOOM + DOOM II is installed.
  5. Launch Skyrim through SKSE.

Do not manually copy DOOM WAD files into the SkyDoom mod.

Current controls

  • Left mouse button — fire
  • 1 — melee
  • 2 — pistol
  • 3 — shotgun
  • 4 — chaingun
  • 5 — rocket launcher
  • 6 — plasma rifle
  • 7 — BFG
  • F10 — toggle DOOM music

All seven current SkyDoom weapon slots are available from the start.

Included in this beta

  • Chocolate Doom weapon/HUD state bridged into Skyrim
  • Seven DOOM weapon slots
  • DOOM weapon damage against Skyrim NPCs
  • Rocket explosions with Skyrim-native knockback/ragdoll interaction
  • DOOM health, armour and ammunition state
  • Physical DOOM-style health/armour/ammo drops from Skyrim enemies
  • DOOM HUD and first-person weapon overlay
  • DOOM sound and standard Chocolate Doom music behaviour
  • Automatic Steam DOOM.WAD discovery
  • Portable bundled Chocolate Doom runtime

Known rough edges

  • Tiny alpha pinholes may occasionally appear in parts of the first-person
    DOOM weapon overlay.
  • Blood/gore currently relies heavily on Skyrim-native impact effects and is
    more restrained than DOOM.
  • Knockback can vary on unusually large or non-standard Skyrim creatures.
  • Controller-specific input mapping is not a primary focus of this beta.

Enhanced soundtrack

SkyDoom v0.1.0-beta uses Chocolate Doom's standard music setup.

For a future/full release, I am considering optional support for the enhanced
soundtrack available with newer DOOM releases, using files from the player's
own legitimate installation.

Source / licences

The full corresponding source for this release is available in this repository
at tag v0.1.0-beta.

  • SkyDoom SKSE bridge: GPL-3.0
  • Modified Chocolate Doom: GPL-2.0
  • Third-party runtime notices are included in the binary package

No proprietary DOOM or Skyrim game data is distributed with SkyDoom.

Inspiration

SkyCraft by chasmlol was the inspiration for attempting this project in the
first place. Huge credit to that project for demonstrating what was possible
with passthrough-style integration.
