FastCast v0.6.0
FastCast v0.6.0 makes a compact dashboard the default view: the controls a recording actually needs, on one screen, with the full detailed view one click — or F2 — away. FastCast Pro also moves to Gumroad. Recording, streaming, encoder, capture, and audio behavior are unchanged from v0.5.1, with one deliberate exception noted below.
Requires Windows 10 (20H1+) or Windows 11, x64. Portable ZIP — no installer needed.
The new default view
- A large live preview over three summary cards — Sources, Destination, Recent files — and the Start/Stop dock.
- Pick your sources without opening Advanced. Screen, the app to capture, audio mode, and microphone are all chosen from the Sources card.
- Mic and desktop mute as icons beside the preview, with the level meter between them, plus global hotkeys Ctrl+Alt+F10 (mic) and Ctrl+Alt+F11 (desktop).
- The view now tells you where a take goes and when it ends — a "Saves to …" line, and "Stops after N seconds" whenever a fixed Duration is set.
- An FPS control (30 / 60 / 120) and platform icons for YouTube, Twitch, and Kick.
- Recent recordings reads in plain language. An entry used to lead with internals — segment counts, validation state, nit levels. It now leads with what you actually check after a take, length and size (
0:07 · 1.8 MB), and says anything worth knowing in one sentence. Recording on an HDR screen is a normal, successful path and no longer looks like a fault.
The detailed view is unchanged and still reachable from the Advanced button, the dock gear, the title-bar toggle, or F2 — which never eats a keystroke meant for a text field.
Windows' yellow capture border is gone
FastCast holds a screen-capture session the whole time the live preview is up, so Windows' yellow "capture" border used to sit on screen from launch and read as "you are being recorded" when nothing was being recorded. FastCast now suppresses it for its own capture sessions — including while recording.
FastCast still shows its own Recording state and session clock, so you always know when a take is running. On Windows builds before 10 20348 the border is unchanged. This is a deliberate product decision, not an oversight.
FastCast Pro now sold through Gumroad
- Upgrade to Pro opens the Gumroad product page, and Gumroad license keys activate Pro from the same Activate field as before.
- Existing Lemon Squeezy keys keep working. FastCast picks the store from the key itself, so a device that is already activated is unaffected — there is nothing to do.
- Activation stays local-first: no accounts, no telemetry. Your key is sent only when you click Activate, is stored redacted, and the 14-day offline grace window is unchanged.
- Deactivating a Gumroad license removes it from that device only. Gumroad gives an app no way to release a seat without a seller credential, which FastCast will not ship. Deactivating a Lemon Squeezy license still frees the seat as before.
A new application icon
FastCast ships new artwork, drawn at ten sizes from 16 px to 256 px, so the title bar, Explorer, the taskbar, and Alt-Tab each get an exact frame instead of a stretched one. Its interior is transparent, so it sits well on both light and dark backdrops.
Fixed
- A saved Duration could end a recording early with nothing on screen to explain it.
- Switching views could push the window under the taskbar; both views are now fitted to the monitor they are actually on.
- A muted microphone was signalled by color alone; it now uses a crossed-out mic icon.
- The Profile chip clipped and squeezed the status row beside it, cutting off the capture details. It now uses a short form, and the picker keeps the full names.
- The compact pickers did nothing when clicked, the dashboard did not fit short displays, a double window outline was drawn, and the session clock overlapped the Stop label.
Upgrading from v0.5.1
Unzip v0.6.0 anywhere and run fastcast.exe — your settings and license are stored separately (under %APPDATA%\FastCast) and carry over automatically. You can delete the old folder.
