Generals: Zero Hour XR 1.2.36 preview

Talk to your opponent in LAN matches, and enjoy a sharper tabletop by default.

New: LAN voice chat (experimental)

  • Voice-activated: no button to hold. Your microphone only sends while you
are actually speaking, and silence is not transmitted. Voice uses the
headset's echo cancellation and noise suppression.
  • Turn it on: UI → Display → Voice chat: OFF / ON / MUTED. It is off
by default. The first time you switch it on, the Quest asks for microphone
permission. MUTED lets you listen without sending.
  • See who is talking: while voice chat is active, a small plate below the
UI, Commands and Ground View shortcuts shows VOICE, YOU SPEAK, PLAYER
    SPEAKS, MUTED or NO MICROPHONE.
  • Where it works: in the LAN lobby and during LAN matches, with every human
player of that game. All players need 1.2.36 on the same local network.
  • Voice runs on its own network channel (UDP port 8094) and is completely
separate from the game's synchronization, so it cannot cause a mismatch.
  • This is a first version: there is no per-player mute yet, and voice is sent
uncompressed, which is fine on a home network. Feedback is welcome.

Sharper by default

  • High resolution (1920 px per eye) is now the default, made affordable by
the rendering savings in 1.2.35. If you were on Balanced, you are moved to
High once; Ultra+ stays as it is. You can switch back anytime under UI →
    Display → Resolution.

Unchanged

  • Everything from 1.2.35: single-pass fog rendering, calmer Commands console,
    stable Ground View horizon.
  • Experimental LAN multiplayer between Quest 3 headsets running the same
version, with tabletop view, lobby discovery and Direct Connect.

Scope and requirements

  • Meta Quest 3; native ARM64 OpenXR build.
  • LAN multiplayer and voice chat are experimental previews. Every player must
run 1.2.36 with identical game files; matches against older XR versions or
the PC version of Zero Hour (Steam or other) are not supported.
  • Internet multiplayer and replays remain outside this preview. Ground View
stays limited to Campaign and offline Skirmish.
  • Supply your own legally obtained complete Generals and Zero Hour game files.
No retail game data is included.
  • This is an independent community project, not an Electronic Arts product or
    endorsement.

Generals: Zero Hour XR 1.2.35 preview

This release makes the tabletop smoother and sharper: less rendering work per
frame, a calmer Commands console and a stable horizon in Ground View.

Performance

  • Fog of war is now rendered in a single pass. Rocks, bushes, props and
partly fogged buildings used to be drawn twice every frame: once normally
and once more to darken them with the fog. They are now drawn once, with the
fog applied in the same step. In our on-device CPU profile, these extra fog
draws dropped by about two thirds, and rendering's share of the game thread
fell from about 60% to 48%. The fog looks the same as before.
  • Trees are no longer rebuilt with every head movement. Small head
movements used to rebuild and relight all trees each frame. This per-frame
    cost is practically gone.
  • The gain depends on the scene. It is largest on maps with a lot of scenery in
fogged or explored areas, and makes higher resolution settings more
    affordable.

Sharper and calmer visuals

  • Commands console no longer shimmers. Its fine borders, small text and
scanline pattern flickered with head movement at normal viewing distance.
All controller panels now use mipmapped, anisotropic filtering tuned to keep
    text sharp.
  • Stable horizon in Ground View. Distant hills no longer appear at the edge
of your vision and vanish when you look straight at them. The horizon is now
a fixed 60 m circle around you, whichever way you look.

Unchanged

  • Experimental LAN multiplayer from 1.2.34 between Quest 3 headsets running the
same version, with tabletop view, lobby discovery and Direct Connect.
  • Campaign, Skirmish, controller commands and game-data import.

Scope and requirements

  • Meta Quest 3; native ARM64 OpenXR build.
  • LAN multiplayer stays an experimental preview. Every player must run 1.2.35
with identical game files; matches against 1.2.34 or against the PC version
of Zero Hour (Steam or other) are not supported.

Generals: Zero Hour XR 1.2.34 preview

This preview adds experimental LAN multiplayer between two Meta Quest 3
headsets, with the tabletop view in LAN matches, on top of the 1.2.33
command-console release.

Changes since 1.2.33

  • LAN matches between two Quest 3 headsets running this same version stay synchronized. Tested with two Quest 3 headsets on one Wi-Fi network.
  • LAN matches now use the same tabletop view as Campaign and Skirmish.
  • The LAN lobby now lists games hosted by another Quest. Direct Connect by IP address also still works.
  • The native keyboard no longer reopens after Enter when you then press another button, such as Direct Connect's connect button.
  • Simulation math now gives identical results on every device running this version.
  • A mismatch between players is now reported reliably. It was previously missed in some two-player slots.
  • New optional Setup switch "LAN sync checkpoints" writes synchronization checkpoints to the game log for bug reports. It does not change gameplay.

Scope and requirements

  • Meta Quest 3; native ARM64 OpenXR build.
  • LAN multiplayer is an experimental preview. Every player must run 1.2.34 with identical game files.
  • Matches against the PC version of Zero Hour (Steam or other), or against older XR versions, are not supported and will report a mismatch.
  • Internet multiplayer and replays remain outside this preview. Ground View stays limited to Campaign and offline Skirmish.
  • Supply your own legally obtained complete Generals and Zero Hour game files. No retail game data is included.
  • This is an independent community project, not an Electronic Arts product or endorsement.

Generals: Zero Hour XR 1.2.33 preview

This public offline preview adds the accepted spatial command-console redesign
and native Quest text entry while retaining the 1.2.28 performance baseline.

Changes since 1.2.28

  • Redesigns the spatial UI and Commands windows with a consistent military-console visual language.
  • Makes the UI, Commands and Ground View shortcut plates transparent outside their visible shapes.
  • Opens Meta's runtime-owned native keyboard for original game text fields, including LAN player name, chat and Direct Connect address entry.
  • Supports visible controller-ray interaction, confirmation and safe return to the game from the native keyboard.
  • Keeps Campaign, offline Skirmish, Ground View, controller commands, localization and game-data import behavior intact.

Scope and requirements

  • Meta Quest 3; native ARM64 OpenXR build.
  • Offline Campaign and AI Skirmish remain the supported preview paths.
  • Supply your own legally obtained complete Generals and Zero Hour game files. No retail game data is included.
  • Human multiplayer remains experimental and is not release-ready; native text entry does not resolve the known simulation mismatch.
  • This is an independent community project, not an Electronic Arts product or endorsement.

Generals: Zero Hour XR 1.2.28 preview

This public offline preview focuses on smoother large-tabletop play on Meta Quest 3.

Changes since 1.2.25

  • Batches unchanged Android terrain patches to reduce draw-call and engine CPU overhead at wide zoom levels without lowering terrain detail.
  • Reduces per-frame XR board-mesh allocation and redundant alpha processing.
  • Keeps the existing Campaign, offline Skirmish, Ground View, spatial windows, controller commands, localization and game-data importer behavior.

In the maintained maximum-coverage Campaign measurement, frame time improved from 42.00 to 34.30 ms (23.8 to 29.2 derived FPS). Results vary with map, effects and battle load. The maintainer confirmed the rendered image remained correct and the tested scene felt much smoother.

Scope and requirements

  • Meta Quest 3; native ARM64 OpenXR build.
  • Offline Campaign and AI Skirmish are the supported preview paths.
  • Supply your own legally obtained complete Generals and Zero Hour game files. No retail game data is included.
  • Human multiplayer remains experimental and is not release-ready.
  • This is an independent community project, not an Electronic Arts product or endorsement.
