ClearPDF V5 (app version 2.1.0)

ClearPDF is a free, open-source PDF editor and reader for Android. You can edit the text already in a PDF, annotate and sign, fill forms, edit Excel (XLSX) spreadsheets, view Word and PowerPoint files, and scan documents. It runs on Android 6.0+ with a Liquid Glass interface you can tune yourself.

V5 is the biggest update since 2.0. You can now edit a PDF's own text in place, and you can customise the Liquid Glass look in detail. You can share documents as PDF, images or text, use dark mode for documents, and work with Hindi and Indic spreadsheets. The app also has a smoother, springier feel throughout.

✨ What's new in V5

✏️ Edit PDF text in place (#48)

  • Tap a line with the Text tool, or long-press a word and choose Edit text, and rewrite it where it sits.
  • The new text uses the PDF's original font where possible. Otherwise ClearPDF picks the closest match, so the page still looks the same.

🧊 Liquid Glass, your way (#53)

  • A new Settings → Liquid Glass page lets you adjust blur, refraction height and amount, depth, chromatic aberration, vibrancy, brightness, tint, highlight and corner roundness.
  • Four presets get you started: Default, Readable, Crystal and Performance. You can also pick one during onboarding.
  • Every glass surface follows your settings, including buttons, menus, dialogs and the long-press menu.

📤 Share in more formats (#54)

  • Share or export a document as a PDF, as page images (PNG) or as plain text, with your annotations and edits included.

🌙 Dark mode for documents (#26)

  • An optional dark page appearance for comfortable reading at night.
  • Signatures and ink change colour to stay visible in dark reading mode, and the reader controls adjust their contrast to match.

📊 Spreadsheets (XLSX)

  • Hindi, Devanagari and other Indic scripts display, edit and save correctly. (#28)
  • Copy selected cells to the clipboard. (#25)
  • Refreshed editor controls, including a Liquid Glass colour palette.

📖 A better PDF reader

  • Page bookmarks that persist between sessions.
  • Auto-scroll with an adjustable speed.
  • One-handed zoom controls.
  • Lasso selection to pick up several annotations at once.
  • A magnifying loupe while you select text.
  • PDFs reopen where you left off when you open them from Recents. (#16)
  • Signatures can now be dragged from one page to another.
  • PDFs open faster: the first page appears with the document instead of after a dark pause.

🔒 Privacy controls (#29)

  • Turn off recent files and reading history, and choose whether ClearPDF keeps local copies of documents.

🌍 Languages

  • Russian translation. (#24)
  • Italian translation, contributed by @DZAladan. (#52)

💫 Look and feel

  • iOS-style springy buttons and menus: glass swells under your finger, gives one soft jiggle on release, and menus unfold from where you tapped.
  • Haptic feedback on every button, one tick per tap, with an on/off switch in Settings → Personalization.
  • Settings is redesigned as a clean index with a separate page for each topic.
  • Shadows are gone everywhere, for crisper glass and smoother scrolling.
  • A What's new screen after each update, plus first-use tips for the new features.

🐞 Fixes

  • Fixed a black screen when returning to the app from the background. (#31)
  • Quick Settings and the taskbar no longer switch to the large-screen layout while ClearPDF is open (Pixel 10 Pro XL). ClearPDF now follows Android's display mode and power policy. (#30)
  • Fixed a crash when opening images (PNG, JPG and others).
  • Resized text boxes now stay anchored where you put them, and an exact size slider has been added.
  • Long-pressing Back now acts when you release your finger, not in the middle of the press.

Notes

  • What can be edited: PDF text can be edited in place on text-based PDFs. Scanned pages are images, so use OCR to copy their text. XLSX spreadsheets can be edited and saved. Word (DOC/DOCX) and PowerPoint (PPT/PPTX) files open for viewing and annotation, and annotated copies can be exported as PDF.
  • Office rendering: results can vary by file. The optional LibreOffice-based engine (Settings → Office engine) can improve rendering for supported Office files.
  • Privacy and network: documents are processed on your device, and ClearPDF does not upload them. The FOSS build uses the network only for the optional Office engine download and for the web-address-to-PDF feature you start yourself. Scanning and some image features use Google Play services. See PRIVACY.md.
  • Build: these are the FOSS sideload builds, made from main at 456c769 on October 10, 2026. Full source and build instructions are in the README.
