Sunlight Before Screentime

Sunlight Before Screentime is an app that blocks access to distracting applications, first thing in the morning. It's crucial to get 15 minutes of sunlight within the first hour of waking up. The app will motivate users to do so.

Phase I: Analyzing Users, Competitors, and Initial Designs

Executive Summary

First round of Research and development on user engagement and how to help the user break habits via sunlight before screentime.

Competitive analysis revealed an opportunity to release an app that covers all bases of sleep habit improvement.

  • Subscription based models: Most competitors offer limited functionality on free models
  • Multi focus/function: Do more than just limit access in the morning and have access to multiple alarms.
  • Bypass ability: Opportunity to turn off the app in case of an emergency.

Heuristic evaluation helped determine strong suits and shortcomings:

  • Simplicity in phrasing around downtime and wake up time is important
  • Proper scaling for different user interfaces
  • Free based models to promote app usage

First round of sketches and diagrams focused around

  • Workflow of app(Home page, settings page and goal pages)
  • Design that is easily digestible without needing much engagement
  • Design that's easy on the eye and promotes usage
