surrealra1n GUI 0.0.4

@Chrissshere Chrissshere released this 06 Oct 00:05

surrealra1n GUI 0.0.4 (Build 7) adds easier access to restore diagnostics.

  • Added Show in Finder in the log window to reveal the current session's automatically saved log.
  • Logs now include the GUI version, build number, macOS version, and session start time.
  • The About panel reads version information from the app bundle.
  • Packaging keeps the installer version and app version aligned.

Validation: restore and Just Boot integration tests passed, including separate session logs and the inherited-output-pipe regression. The Release app was built for both Apple Silicon and Intel, its ad hoc signature was verified, and the DMG was verified. Physical-device restore testing was not performed for this release.

Downloads: universal macOS DMG and PKG; macOS 12 or later. The app is ad hoc signed and is not notarized; the PKG is unsigned.

A restore can erase the connected device. Keep a backup. Tethered installations require Just Boot after shutdown.

This updated Build 6 fixes the GUI remaining frozen at the last restore percentage after the main surrealra1n process had exited. A helper process could inherit the output pipe and keep it open, so the app waited indefinitely instead of displaying the result.

The GUI now finishes when the main process ends, recognizes the real restore completion messages, reaches 100 percent, and shows a successful tethered restore screen. Recovery mode is expected at that point. The screen now includes a Just Boot button that opens the saved bootchain selector directly.

The regression test recreates the problem with a successful restore whose parent exits while a child keeps stdout open. Completion is now immediate, and all other restore and boot integration paths continue to pass.

This re-release fixes the crash that could happen when the GUI tried to answer a surrealra1n menu just as the shell process exited. Menu choices are still handled automatically, but input is now stopped safely during shutdown.

Restore output is also written continuously to ~/Library/Logs/Surrealra1nGUI, so a failed run leaves a useful log even if the log window cannot be opened. The progress display no longer mistakes the credits line about ASR patching for active restore work.

I added process-level tests for tethered restores, blob restores on supported devices, 10.3.3 restores, Just Boot, log-window reopening, and the early-exit race that caused this crash. The current surrealra1n development script was checked against the GUI integration before packaging.

The app version remains 0.0.3, with Build 4. This is a separate release and does not replace the original 0.0.3 beta. The DMG and PKG contain a universal arm64/x86_64 build. It is still beta software, and restores can erase the connected device.

0.0.3 fixes restore and Just Boot sessions stopping at surrealra1n text menus. Bash hides read -p prompts when a script receives input through a pipe, so the GUI never saw the line it was waiting for. The app now exposes those prompts in piped sessions and recognizes complete menu layouts independently, allowing it to select the requested operation and continue automatically.

The release includes universal Intel and Apple Silicon builds. It remains beta software: keep a backup, connect the device directly to the Mac, and do not run it inside a virtual machine.

This is the first source release of the surrealra1n macOS GUI.

The app provides the script’s restore workflow through a native step-by-step interface, including device detection, firmware and bootchain selection, per-device DFU guidance, live progress output, and a full log window. Generated restore files and bootchains can be kept outside the temporary engine workspace.

The DMG and PKG contain a universal build for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 12 or later. This is experimental restore software: keep a backup, expect unfinished edges, and read the log before retrying a failed operation.

The application and installer are not Developer ID notarized, so macOS may require an explicit Open action on first launch.
