Tuned In 5.0

Tuned In now works in every Chromium browser, has a redesigned side panel, and reads pages more cleanly.

The redesigned side panel: settings, a recommendation, and Enter text mode

What's new

  • Works in Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Arc. A local AI model (Google's EmbeddingGemma) now ships with the extension, so it no longer needs Chrome's Gemini Nano. Chrome still uses Nano when it's installed, and Settings → Advanced → AI engine lets you choose.
  • Redesigned side panel. A new icon, refreshed light and dark themes, and a cleaner layout for settings and history. Dark mode no longer flashes white when the panel opens. The Forest theme has been retired.
  • Choose what it reads. Sample area can be the opening of the page, the whole page, or text you paste in. The Opening length slider now sets exactly how much of the opening the AI reads, whichever engine you use.
  • Cleaner reading. The page reader now skips hidden styling code, infobox tables, citation markers like [1], and repeated paragraphs, so recommendations reflect the article itself.
  • History that shows its work. Expand More Info on any pick to see the exact text the AI read, for example "4,500 of 20,000 chars · Opening".
  • Help built in. Every setting has an ⓘ tooltip explaining what it does.

Upgrade notes

  • Download size. The extension is about 200 MB larger because it includes the local model. Page content still never leaves your browser.
  • New permission. Tuned In now asks for unlimitedStorage, so history can keep the full text each pick was based on.
  • Settings carried over. Your saved settings still work. An older reading-length value moves to the nearest new step, and "Full text mode" becomes the Whole page option.
  • Older history. Entries saved before 5.0 still show the old 4,000-character text preview.
