Hermes Mobile v0.2.0

🎉 The big one: a native-feel control surface

This is a huge jump in both feel and reliability. Hermes Mobile now animates like a mobile app rather than a web page, uses a real three-pane workspace when there is room for one, supports multi-Bot group chats, and no longer needs a refresh tap to show you a reply.

What's new

Native-feel motion across the app

A spring-damped interaction layer now covers every surface: screens push and pop in the direction you are moving, sheets and popovers present and dismiss with settling physics, list rows stagger in, and press states respond instantly. Scroll ownership is explicit (one scroll container per surface, so nested panes cannot fight), pull-to-refresh and swipe-back each own their direction, and prefers-reduced-motion is honoured throughout. Composer state and chat auto-scroll were reshaped so typing and streaming stay smooth.

A real three-pane workspace for foldables and tablets

Unfolding a foldable, or using a tablet or iPad, now gives you the tri-fold layout: Bots rail · conversation · the Bot's computer and routines. Every screen renders in the middle pane, so opening settings or a Bot profile no longer throws the workspace away. Drag a divider to resize a column, or click it to collapse it — the right pane starts hidden so the conversation gets the space, and your arrangement is remembered per device. Detecting the unfold is instant: the app listens to every viewport signal rather than waiting on a single media query.

Multi-Bot group chats

Groups are their own conversations alongside your Bot chats. Create one from mobile, open its room immediately, and talk to several Bots at once with each reply attributed to its member. Replies stream in live, reopening a group restores its history, and group identity is handled case- and separator-insensitively so a group always lands in the room that actually holds its conversation.

Chat reliability

  • Replies no longer wait for a refresh tap. Both Bot chats and group rooms recover a reply the client lost — a stream that stops mid-answer is reconciled against the host's transcript, so the finished text appears on its own.
  • A chat held by another Hermes window explains itself. Hermes allows one live process per session, so a Desktop-held chat refuses a mobile message; the app now says exactly that, and what to do, instead of echoing a raw refusal.
  • A credential this device cannot decrypt is treated as no credential (phone-to-phone transfer, backup restore), so a sealed secret can never wedge the app in a state you cannot get out of.

Your Bot's screen, on your phone

Where a Bot has its own computer, the wide-screen pane now shows it live and lets you take over. Hermes streams the Bot's desktop as raw RFB and gates typing and pointing behind a lease, so watching and taking control are one flow: press Take control to take the mouse and keyboard (logins, 2FA, CAPTCHAs) and Release control to hand them back to the Bot. Two defects had made this impossible — take-over called method names the host does not define, and the pane showed a still image refreshed every few seconds instead of the stream, so it could never carry input.

A Bot's own desktop runs on a Linux gateway host, or in a Linux sandbox for that Bot, so on a Windows host a Bot needs the Docker sandbox placement before there is a screen to show.

Notifications, settings and theming

Native OS notifications with the Bot's own avatar, a live status line, and an estimated progress phase; a notifications pane; a haptics on/off toggle; and theme selection that applies to every route, sheet, wizard, input and error state — not just the main screens. Clarify cards let you answer a Bot's mid-turn questions, and each Bot's routines are visible from the wide layout.

Host gateway (the computer running Hermes Desktop)

The gateway now fronts the live Desktop runtime on the port your phone already uses, rewriting Host and Origin so the loopback runtime accepts the phone, with one script that starts and stops the whole companion stack. It never advertises a runtime that cannot authenticate a remote client, and the session-attach relay that lets the phone and Desktop share one conversation is verified end to end.

How the setup works

Hermes Mobile connects to an existing Hermes Desktop host. The phone does not run a second Hermes agent runtime.

  1. Run Hermes Desktop on your host computer.
  2. Run the Hermes Mobile gateway on that same host computer using the installer for your operating system below. The gateway makes the existing Hermes host available securely over your private Tailscale network.
  3. Install the Android APK on your phone.
  4. Make sure the phone and host are connected to the same trusted Tailscale network.
  5. Open Hermes Mobile and pair it with the gateway using the host address and the in-app authentication flow.
  6. Verify that real Bots and conversations load before using the app.

Do not install the phone app before the host gateway is running. The app is a client/control surface and requires a reachable, authenticated Hermes host.

Android

  • Download the signed ARM64 Android APK below for direct installation.
  • Package: com.hermesagent.mobile
  • Version: 0.2.0
  • Signed with the Hermes Mobile release/upload certificate.
  • APK SHA-256: 5c878f65dd1c1e2118501c8dede91fb02c4cb0d8d0632f2566650d41f86490f6

Updating from 0.1.1 installs in place — same package, same signing certificate, and a higher version code — so your saved pairing is kept. Google Play submission is a separate track from direct APK distribution.

iPhone / iOS

iPhone/iOS support is baked into the app already but needs to be compiled on a Mac in Xcode by an Apple developer, so the iOS app is coming soon!

Host gateway installers

Download the installer for the computer that runs Hermes Desktop and use the matching platform file:

  • Hermes-Mobile-Gateway-Windows.ps1 — Windows PowerShell installer.
  • Hermes-Mobile-Gateway-Windows.cmd — Windows launcher for the PowerShell installer.
  • Hermes-Mobile-Gateway-macOS.sh — macOS LaunchAgent installer.
  • Hermes-Mobile-Gateway-Linux.sh — Linux systemd user-service installer.
  • Hermes-Mobile-Gateway-README.md — platform setup and security notes.

After installing, run the gateway installer’s status command and confirm the service is running before opening Hermes Mobile. The gateway is intended for private Tailscale access. Do not expose port 9119 directly to the public internet.

Keep the signing keystore and any credentials private; never upload them as release assets.

Included task and control-surface features

  • Live Bot and conversation control through an existing Hermes host.
  • Multi-Bot group chats, addressed and streamed live.
