You can share your screen now

The half that was never built. Receiving other people's screens already worked; sending your own did not. Share screen in the call panel asks which screen and how good, and goes live.

It is captured through Desktop Duplication, which is the API the Windows compositor already feeds. That matters in two ways you will notice: hardware overlays are actually in the picture, where the older way of grabbing the screen leaves video players and many games black — and when nothing on screen moves, nothing is sent at all.

Encoding uses whatever this machine has: NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or Windows' own, falling back to Cisco's software encoder when there is nothing better. Hardware first is not about frame rate. Encoding 1080p in software costs a core, on the same machine already running whatever you are sharing, and a share that makes the thing on screen stutter is worse than no share.

Capture and encoding run on a thread of their own, so sharing does not make the rest of the client hitch.

Not in this one

Sharing a single window rather than a whole screen, and sharing the sound coming out of it. Only your microphone is carried. The picker says so rather than leaving it to be found out.

Sending your own camera is still missing — it is the same pipeline pointed at a different source.

Warning

Discord does not permit third party clients on a normal user account, and using one can get the account banned. Your password is sent to discord.com and nowhere else, is never written to disk and never logged; only the returned token is kept, sealed with your Windows account key.
