Releases: ColeMei/pane

v0.6.2

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Aug 07:23

Pane now downloads as a disk image.

Changes and fixes

  • The download is a .dmg instead of a .zip — open it and drag Pane onto the Applications folder beside it.

Install

brew install --cask ColeMei/pane/pane

Or open the .dmg below and drag Pane to Applications.

Pane is unsigned, so macOS will call it "damaged" the first time. Clear the flag once:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Pane.app

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Aug 05:09
a8fc8af

Five fixes from a week of using v0.6.0.

Changes and fixes

  • A dismissed pane no longer reappears on the desktop when a display sleeps and wakes, a lid closes and opens, or a monitor is unplugged.
  • The list buttons and ⇧⌘7 / ⇧⌘8 / ⇧⌘9 now convert between numbered, bulleted and task lists instead of stacking one marker in front of another, and they work on indented items — a nested item converts at its own level and numbers from 1.
  • Only one list button lights at a time, and it reflects the line the caret is on.
  • Selecting a list draws one even highlight per line rather than two rectangles a few pixels out of step.
  • The Settings window keeps one size across all five tabs; the Shortcuts tab scrolls instead of resizing the window.

Install

brew install --cask ColeMei/pane/pane

v0.6.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Aug 10:06

Numbered lists count themselves, a pane can stay put on one desktop, and the app can finally tell you which version it is.

Features

  • Numbered lists renumber themselves. Delete or insert an item and the rest follow. A list you deliberately started at 5. keeps its numbering, and one press of ⌘Z takes the edit and the renumbering back together.
  • A pane can keep to the Space it was summoned on. By default a pane follows you between desktops and over fullscreen apps, which is usually what you want. Turn it off — in Settings, from ⌘K, or with ⌥⌘S — and it stays where you left it.
  • An About tab, with the version and a Check for Updates button. It asks GitHub only when you press it, and tells you rather than downloading anything.

Changes and fixes

  • The Shortcuts tab lists the keys you might want to change rather than every key that exists. ⌘N, ⌘P, ⌘K, ⌘D, ⌘F and ⌥⌘F still work and still show their keys in ⌘K; they simply no longer take a row you would never touch.
  • Typing while a note downloads from iCloud reaches the disk straight away instead of waiting for the download to finish.
  • Nothing typed is lost when a downloading note arrives.
  • ⌫ at a paragraph break joins the paragraphs instead of leaving a half-broken line behind, from every position the caret can be in.
  • Clicking the gap between two paragraphs no longer puts the caret there or opens up a line.
  • A list marker no longer jumps to the right when the caret lands on its line.
  • A revealed ``` fence keeps its breathing room inside the code block.
  • Pressing a second format button after the first now writes valid markdown — ⌘B then ⌘E gives **`word`**.
  • Settings, Export and the folder dialogs open in front of the pane rather than behind it.
  • The Sync dialog is one sentence, and its second button says what it does.
  • The conflict banner names what happened and stops, instead of printing a filename too long to fit.
  • Every shortcut printed on a button or in the ⌘K panel now shows the key you have bound, not the one it shipped with.
  • The default markdown theme is called "Default".

v0.5.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 20 Aug 05:21

Notes name themselves, Return starts a paragraph, and undo stops emptying them.

Features

  • Find and replace. Open the disclosure on the find bar, or press ⌥⌘F.
  • ⌘A selects the block you are in, and again for the whole note.
  • A new note is named from what you write in it. The file now appears at your first keystroke rather than the moment you press ⌘N, so notes stop being called "untitled" for life — and a note you start and walk away from leaves nothing behind.
  • The pane has a maximum width, so it can no longer be dragged out to a column of text floating in empty space. Height still grows as far as you like.

Changes and fixes

  • ⌘Z could empty a note. It cannot any more — this was possible in every previous version, and it is the reason to upgrade.
  • Return starts a new paragraph and Shift-Return stays in the one you are in; one Backspace undoes one Return.
  • Formatting a selection that spans two paragraphs formats each of them, instead of writing markup that never renders.
  • Every formatting button turns off again when you press it a second time, and none of them can write a marker next to a space where markdown will ignore it.
  • Numbered lists number, and a list or quote lines its second line up with its first.
  • The selection is the accent colour and hugs the text rather than washing the whole pane.
  • The title bar shows a note by the same name the note list does, centred, and it survives a narrow pane.
  • ⌘F no longer shrinks the pane and ⌘P no longer inflates it.
  • A ticked task greys out and strikes through.
  • Duplicate Note and Hide from Screen Capture say that they happened.
  • Changing your notes folder mid-sentence no longer leaves the newer copy behind in the old one.
  • An empty note says so, and every message in the app says what happened and stops.

v0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Aug 14:30
57c3d53

A polish release. No new corners of the app — the note reads better, the panels sit where they should, and several things that could quietly lose a sentence no longer can.

Features

  • Underline (⌘U) and highlight (⇧⌘M) join the formatting keys, and the format bar gains a code-block button on ⌥⌘C.
  • Every button in the pane names itself when you hover it, with its shortcut.
  • Two markdown themes ship — Reading, a roomier serif, and Compact — in the themes folder, to copy and edit rather than to start from nothing.

Changes and fixes

  • Notes read the way they should: tighter lines, real space between blocks, and lists that no longer march across the pane.
  • Raw markdown now shows only where the caret actually is, instead of stripping every bold word on the line — and a pane you have clicked away from renders completely.
  • The caret is the accent colour, which it was supposed to be all along.
  • ⌘K and ⌘P sit properly inside the pane with even margins, close when you click outside them, and no longer let you type into the note behind them.
  • The title bar carries ⌘K; the pin appears only while the pane is pinned; a pane you are not touching keeps its title and word count instead of going blank.
  • The title follows the first line as you type it, so a new note is never nameless.
  • Deleting a note keeps what you typed in the last half-second, and so does changing your notes folder.
  • Nested lists are no longer indented twice, and a new bullet takes the marker the list above it uses.
  • The Shortcuts tab is grouped and easier to scan, and Settings stops explaining every control in a sentence.

Install

brew install --cask ColeMei/pane/pane

v0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 17 Aug 09:16
cd1f5db

Several shortcuts Pane was printing on its own buttons turned out to do nothing. They work now, and the Shortcuts tab tells you which keys you can change.

Features

  • ⌘[ and ⌘] walk back and forward through the notes you opened this session.
  • The markdown formatting keys are bound: ⌘B bold, ⌘I italic, ⇧⌘S strikethrough, ⌘E code, ⌘L link, ⇧⌘B quote, ⇧⌘7/8/9 lists and ⌥⌘1/2/3 headings.
  • ⌘0 resets the text size, joining ⌘= and ⌘−.
  • Recently Deleted can now remove a note for good, and tells you how long you have before it goes on its own.
  • Deleting a note shows a message saying where it went and how long it will keep.
  • ⌘K is findable without knowing it exists: a hint in the footer, and an Actions… item in the menu bar.

Changes and fixes

  • Shortcuts come in two kinds, and the Shortcuts tab lists both. Pane's own — summon, ⌘K, ⌘P, back and forward, and every ⌘K row — are rebindable, with a recorder and Restore Defaults. The markdown formatting keys are fixed, because they mean the same thing in every editor.
  • ⌘K no longer hides Delete Note below the fold, and reopening it starts at the top instead of wherever you left it scrolled.
  • ⌘= and ⌘− change the text size, which the Appearance tab has advertised since v0.1.
  • Duplicate Note and Copy as Markdown no longer draw the same icon.

Install

brew install --cask ColeMei/pane/pane

v0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 16 Aug 13:36
f6dd9ed

The action panel is finished, and the editor behaves the way it looks.

Features

  • ⌘K is complete at fourteen rows — Find in Note, Copy as Markdown, Reveal in Finder, Export…, Hide from Screen Capture, Duplicate Note, Recently Deleted and the auto-sizing toggle join the rest.
  • ⌘F finds text in the note without moving your caret, counting matches as you step through them.
  • Export a note as a single self-contained HTML file that looks like the pane did.
  • Deleted notes go to Recently Deleted for 30 days and can be restored from ⌘K.
  • An auto-size pill appears when the pointer nears the resize edge, so you can see which mode the pane is in.

Changes and fixes

  • Dragging the pane now turns auto-sizing off and it holds that height however long the note gets. ⇧⌘/ turns it back on.
  • Pane chrome fades in when the pointer is over the pane rather than when the pane has focus, so it stays out of the way while you work elsewhere.
  • A code block's fences now show themselves when the caret is in them, instead of being an invisible strip that broke the block when you typed in it.
  • A horizontal rule reveals its --- when you arrow onto it.
  • Typing after Return no longer drops the text below where the caret was sitting.
  • Return on an empty blockquote line exits the quote, and ⇧⏎ on an empty list item no longer leaves an orphan marker.
  • The switcher and ⌘K share one look and one slot: same width, same glass, never both open, and each closes on a second press of its own key.
  • Neither panel can run off the bottom of a short pane any more.
  • The pane no longer overshoots on a new line, or stays at panel height after a panel closes.

Install

brew install --cask ColeMei/pane/pane

v0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Aug 16:43
95e4a79

The first release. One hotkey floats a notes panel over whatever you are doing, with the caret already in the note you used last.

Features

  • ⌃⌥Space summons the pane and dismisses it, with the caret exactly where you left it. Summoning does not activate the app, so nothing switches and the menu bar does not change.
  • The pane floats above other apps, joins every Space, and works over fullscreen apps.
  • Live markdown as you type: headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code and code blocks, nested lists, task checkboxes, links, rules and blockquotes. Raw source shows on the caret's line only.
  • Every note is a plain .md file in a flat folder you own — ~/Documents/Pane by default, and filenames never change once created.
  • ⌘P searches the whole vault by title or body, and Return on no results creates the note you just described. ⌘N for a new note, and notes can be pinned to the top.
  • ⌘K action panel, a menu bar item, and launch at login.
  • Settings in four tabs: hotkey recorder, dismiss behaviour, Dock icon, vault location, accent, markdown theme, text size, translucency, and rebindable shortcuts. settings.json can be edited by hand and reloads live.
  • Edits made in another editor arrive automatically, and a file that changed underneath Pane is never silently overwritten.
  • Light and dark. No account, no server, no telemetry, and no privacy permissions of any kind.

Install
