@Comfubar Comfubar released this 30 Sep 19:53

The first public release of Know Your Role Recomp: a native Windows port of the 2000 PlayStation wrestling game (NTSC-U, SLUS-01234), built on your PC from your own disc. This release contains no game data.

Highlights

  • Native code, no emulator, no BIOS: the game's code is recompiled with RecompOne and compiled on your PC.
  • One-click setup: pick your .cue; the disc is checked, the game is built (about three minutes) and starts.
  • Every part of the game recompiled and reached in testing: all exhibition match types, Season, the create modes, Rankings, Belt Records, Options.
  • 1-4 players with an automatic multitap; controllers through SDL with per-player cards, live tests and mapping in the launcher; the game's own vibration.
  • Memory card saves kept as files, carried over when you update.
  • Clear error messages instead of crashes (graphics driver, read-only folder, missing Visual C++ runtime with an Install it button).

What you need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with a graphics driver that supports OpenGL 3.3 or newer
  • 4 GB of memory; 1.5 GB of free disk space for setup (the built game takes about 250 MB)
  • Your own NTSC-U disc image (serial SLUS-01234) as .cue + .bin. No BIOS file.
  • The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (x64); most PCs have it, and setup offers an Install it button if not.

Quick start

  1. Extract the zip to a folder you can write to, for example C:\Games\KnowYourRole (not Program Files, not a OneDrive folder).
  2. Double-click KnowYourRole.exe.
  3. Pick your disc image's .cue file (the .bin next to it is found automatically). The game is built and starts. Later, KnowYourRole.exe opens the launcher: press PLAY.

Controllers

  • Tested on hardware: DualSense over USB (menus and a match).
  • Xbox, DualShock 4, Switch Pro, Joy-Con, 8BitDo and generic pads: supported through SDL, tested with simulated controllers.
  • Bluetooth: supported, not yet hardware-tested.
  • Keyboard for players 1 and 2.

Known issues

  • Loading a saved Season with CONTINUE was not confirmed in the latest tests (saving works).
  • A graphics driver with only OpenGL 2.1 starts the game and draws the menus; a match was not tested on one.
  • Bluetooth controllers are supported but not yet tested on real hardware.
  • The game has no analog stick support of its own; the left stick works as the d-pad.
