datapoint labels

idea: to facilitate interpretation, allow use to pass in lists of datapoint labels. plot the datapoint labels near each datapoint (e.g. next to) in a small font...or in a user-specified font

One idea we had is to pass a list the dimensions of the to-be-plotted data with labels for points to be labeled and None where there is no label

e.g. plot_coords.plot_coords(data, labels=['point1',None,'point3'])

A second idea was to pass a list of label/coordinates the length of the points to be labeled. This is nice, but requires the coordinates to be computed before the plotting function is called.

e.g. plot_coords.plot_coords(data,labels=[('point1',(1,3,4)),('point3',(5,2,3))])

and we'd need another before the plotting:

e.g. coords = plot_coords.get_coords(data)

thoughts?

I'd also like to add a flag to hide unless hover:

plot_coords.plot_coords(data,labels=...,hover=True)

The first option seems the most elegant, and I liked the "show on hover" option.

another thought i had this morning-- if the labels are "sticky" (i.e. you show on hover, but don't delete until you hover over again), the partially labeled plots (i.e. with only the specified datapoints labeled) could be saved by the user. or instead of hover, we could do a "show on click" thing-- e.g. you hide the datapoints unless they are clicked, in which case you show that label. and by default (if no labels are specified), clicking on a datapoint shows the datapoint number and PCA coordinate-- e.g. "34: (0.45, 0.3, 1.27)".

that sounds like a useful feature. in terms of implementation, I think maybe two separate flags: 'onhover' and 'onclick' may be the cleanest way to do this.

If no labels are specified, we can default to a datapoint and PCA coord, but only plot if 'onhover/onclick' flags are passed to the function

i like the separate onhover and onclick flags. they have different use cases, so this seems like a good design decision.

labels are working for ND_lists on the 'labels' branch. The API is documented in the readme. I've also added an 'explore' mode which displays labels (or details about the datapoint in no labels provided) when the point is hovered over.

Next I plan to:

• get labels working for all data shapes
• implement a 'tagging' feature that preserves a label if it has been clicked
• redraw the tagged labels when the plot is rotated in 3d mode
