Fish Tank

The Fish Tank is a decorative block that displays items inside a glass-walled enclosure. You can place almost anything inside — fish, blocks, or other items — and fully customize the tank's frame, floor, and glass.

Placing the Tank

Yields: 1× Fish Tank

Craft or obtain a Fish Tank block and place it like any other block. A single fish tank is one block in size and holds up to 27 items (same as a chest).

Adding and Removing Items

Action Result
Right-click holding an item Add one copy of that item to the tank
Right-click with empty hand Remove the most recently added item

Items are displayed inside the tank facing toward the player who placed them.

Connecting Multiple Tanks

Place two fish tanks adjacent to each other (any face) and they will automatically merge into a larger enclosure. Open faces between adjacent tanks disappear, creating a seamless multi-block tank. This works in all six directions.

Size Requirement for Large Items

Items with a size greater than 100 cm (see Fish Species) cannot fit in a single-block tank. You need a connected arrangement that is at least:

  • 3 blocks wide
  • 3 blocks tall

The tank will reject oversized items and explain why in the chat.

Customization

Each fish tank has three visual parts you can change independently:

Part Default
Frame (corners and edges) Oak Planks
Sand (floor) Sand
Glass (side panels) Blue Clear Stained Glass

How to Customize

  1. Set your customization mode to the part you want to change (Frame, Sand, or Glass).
  2. Hold the block you want to apply.
  3. Right-click the tank — that part updates immediately.

The chat confirms the change and shows the block registry name.

Note: Some blocks may be blacklisted for specific parts in the server config. If a block is blocked, the tank will tell you.

Customization Mode

The active customization mode (Frame / Sand / Glass) is tracked per-player. Switch modes using whatever method your modpack or server setup exposes (check your keybinds or the mod's configuration). The current mode determines which part of the tank is affected when you right-click with a block.

Special Glass Blocks

Fishtastic adds two families of glass blocks designed for tank walls:

Family Description
Borderless Stained Glass Stained glass with no visible frame border — tiles seamlessly
Clear Stained Glass Tinted glass with a more transparent/clear texture

Both families exist for all 16 dye colors plus undyed variants (Borderless Glass and Clear Glass).

Recipes — Special Glass Blocks

Borderless Stained Glass — Shapeless, 1 ingredient:

  • 1× [Color] Stained Glass → 1× [Color] Borderless Stained Glass

Clear Stained Glass — Shapeless, 2 ingredients:

  • 1× [Color] Stained Glass + 1× Glass → 1× [Color] Clear Stained Glass

Replace [Color] with any of the 16 dye colors (white, orange, magenta, light blue, yellow, lime, pink, gray, light gray, cyan, purple, blue, brown, green, red, black).

These blocks behave like vanilla stained glass for all other purposes (light transmission, beacon beams, etc.).

Item Rotation

When you add an item to the tank, it is rotated to face the player's position at the time of insertion. This creates a natural "facing the viewer" display. The rotation is stored per-item so it persists through world reloads.
