v2.1.0 — Zotero 10 support
2.0.0 declared support up to Zotero 9 only, so it refused to install on Zotero 10.
Tested on Zotero 10.0.1.
Thanks to @SAPIENTI0R for sending the fix.
v2.0.0 — settings pane
Settings move out of the Tools menu and into Zotero's Settings window, where
your own abbreviations and the ignore list can be edited directly instead of
by hand in a JSON file.
New
- Settings pane at Zotero Settings -> Abbreviation Helper. Every option on one
page, applied immediately. - Add, view and remove your own abbreviations without touching JSON. Your
definitions override whatever a paper says. - The ignore list is editable the same way. Both lists scroll rather than
growing down the page. - One switch for the whole database-link layer.
- "Show every setting in the Tools menu" if you would rather stay in the menu.
- Very small and Very large tooltip sizes.
Fixed
- Databases could not be switched off from the menu — unchecking one silently
re-enabled it. Present since databases first became configurable. - The Databases submenu was built once at startup, so a database added to your
file only appeared after restarting Zotero. - Menu checkboxes could show stale state across windows.
- Form controls now use Zotero's native styling.
Changed
- The Tools menu holds actions only by default; it is rebuilt each time it
opens, so changes made elsewhere show up without a restart. - One name for the settings file everywhere: "abbreviations file".
Note for macOS users
The Tools menu closes after every selection. The menu bar there is a native
NSMenu and macOS dismisses those on selection — no plugin can override it.
That is why settings live in the Settings window.
Detection accuracy is unchanged.
Requires Zotero 7 or newer. Works on macOS, Windows and Linux.

v1.3.0 — reworked menu
Reworked Tools menu and a master switch for database links.
New
- "Show database links" turns the whole lookup-link layer off in one click.
Previously you had to uncheck all seven databases individually.
Fixed
- The Databases submenu was built once at startup, so a database added to
your abbreviations file only appeared after restarting Zotero. It is now
rebuilt each time it opens. - Menu checkboxes could show stale state across windows. They now re-sync
when the menu opens.
Changed
- Menu reorganised by how often things are used: 17 top-level rows became 10.
Modifier keys, database selection and tooltip appearance moved into submenus. - One name for the settings file everywhere ("abbreviations file"), instead of
three names for the same thing. - The two "Hold key to show..." submenus merged into one "When to Show...".
- Modifier choices now read "Always" and "Only while holding Shift". Saved
preferences carry over unchanged.
Detection accuracy is unchanged: 94.7% recall, 90.5% meaning accuracy.

v1.2.1 — first public release
Abbreviation Helper v1.2.1 — first public release
Expands acronyms, initialisms and other abbreviations while you read. Finds
where a paper defines each short form and shows the meaning on hover, so PDFs
can be skimmed without hunting for the first use.
Requires Zotero 7 or newer (tested on Zotero 9.0.6). Works on macOS, Windows
and Linux.
Install: download the .xpi below, then in Zotero go to
Tools -> Add-ons -> gear icon -> Install Add-on From File...
Highlights
- Hover any abbreviation in the Zotero reader to see its meaning
- Parses author-written "Abbreviations" lists in comma, colon and
whitespace-delimited layouts (publishers differ) - Configurable modifier keys (None / Shift / Ctrl / Alt); on macOS the Ctrl
setting also accepts Command - Your own definitions and an ignore list, editable from the menu or a JSON file
- Optional gene, protein, cell line and chemical database lookup links, which
you can add to or remove - Tooltip size and light/dark theme
Accuracy
Measured against a hand-labelled gold standard of 357 abbreviations across 22
papers from 12 publishers: 94.7% recall, 90.5% of found meanings exactly
correct, 97.9% correct or partially correct.
Privacy
All PDF text is processed locally. No telemetry, no uploads. The only network
activity is Zotero's own update check and the database link you click.
