WRL Forge 1.4.0 (Beta)
WRL Forge Releases
Every WRL Forge release, newest first. WRL Forge is a desktop tool for classic
VRML97 .wrl content. It runs on Linux and Windows (x64), and on macOS (Apple
Silicon).
All releases live on GitHub:
https://github.com/DJAscendance/wrlforge/releases
About these versions
- It's a beta. Every version here is marked Beta / Prerelease. None is a
stable or production release, so expect rough edges and changes between
builds. - Signing depends on the platform. Linux and Windows builds aren't
code-signed. That's deliberate for the beta. SmartScreen or Defender may warn
the first time you launch on Windows. macOS builds carry a Developer ID
Application signature and are notarized with the ticket stapled, so Gatekeeper
should let them through normally. - Architectures. Linux x64, Windows x64 and macOS Apple Silicon (arm64).
There's no Intel macOS build, no ARM64 build for Linux or Windows, and no
Snap, Flatpak or Store package. - License: GPL-3.0-or-later. WRL Forge is free software under the GNU
General Public License, version 3 or any later version. SeeLICENSE,
COPYRIGHT.mdand
OPEN_SOURCE_PROVENANCE.md. Third-party
components keep their own licenses. Releases through
v1.3.0-beta.3shipped under the MIT License, and those copies keep the
permissions they came with.
1.4.0 (Beta)
Status: Beta · Prerelease
The machine version is 1.4.0, the tag is v1.4.0, and the release name is
WRL Forge 1.4.0 (Beta). It's flagged as a GitHub prerelease. The release
workflow only assembles a draft. The owner decides whether and when it goes
public.
Linux and Windows artifacts are unsigned. The macOS artifacts are signed with a
Developer ID Application certificate and notarized, with the ticket stapled.
The version numbering changes with this release. The machine version drops
the -beta.N suffix, so it's 1.4.0, not 1.4.0-beta.1. "Beta" moves out of
the SemVer string and into the release name (WRL Forge 1.4.0 (Beta)) and the
GitHub prerelease flag. The project hasn't left beta. The [1.4.0] entry in
CHANGELOG.md covers the source changes since
1.3.0-beta.3.
Once published, 1.4.0 replaces 1.3.0-beta.5 as the current release. Older
releases further down stay available for reference.
This page doesn't repeat the hashes. The SHA-256 for every artifact is in
SHA256SUMS-1.4.0.txt, attached to the release. Check downloads against that
file.

1.3.0-beta.5: Cross-Platform Beta (Private, Unsigned)
Status: Beta · Prerelease · Unsigned. Private candidate, not a stable
release. Do not distribute publicly.
This refresh of the 1.3.0-beta series builds the same source for Linux
x64 and native Windows 11 x64. It adds no product features over
1.3.0-beta.4. The work since beta.3 includes:
- Crash recovery (Phase Beta 2, already in
1.3.0-beta.4). A debounced
recovery snapshot is kept inuserData/editor-recovery.json, and the next
launch asks whether to Restore or Start Fresh. Recovery never changes source
files on disk. Seedocs/PHASE_BETA_2_CRASH_RECOVERY.md. - Accessibility and performance (D1 + D2). The Mall and World toolbars are
keyboard accessible, with toolbar semantics andaria-keyshortcutson
Ctrl+RandCtrl+E.Ctrl+R(Repack) andCtrl+E(Open in Native Editor)
call the same named actions as the buttons. The shortcuts do nothing inside
text inputs, over modal backdrops, or while the matching button is disabled.
The Inspector findings list hasrole=listsemantics, and focus goes back
once, to where it was. The perf gate passes (MEDIAN_GATE: every profile
median is under the 250 ms ceiling). The renderer heap held at 45.20 MB
over 30 edit/reparse cycles. Seedocs/ACCESSIBILITY_PERFORMANCE.md.

the publishedv1.3.0-beta.5release isSHA256SUMS-1.3.0-beta.5.txt,

pre-publication build that went through independent QA, and the later
GitHub Actions rebuild may not match them. For a public download, check
againstSHA256SUMS-1.3.0-beta.5.txt.

The checksums are in release/SHA256SUMS-1.3.0-beta.5.txt, which git ignores,
like the artifacts. For public downloads, that manifest is the authority. The
tables show the pre-publication build that went through independent QA, and the
GitHub Actions rebuild may differ. All five files are unsigned. The PE
certificate table was empty when checked at build time. They are x64 only,
with no ARM64. There is no auto-update, store packaging or public release.
Lifecycle checked on Windows 11. The test machine was a libvirt/QEMU win11
guest at 192.168.122.170, working from local NTFS at C:\Projects\wrlforge
and driven headlessly over SSH. The NSIS installer ran. The installed exe
launched with WRL_FORGE_CAPTURE_SERVER=1 and printed WRL_FORGE_CAPTURE_READY
and WRL_FORGE_CAPTURE_OK. The Start-menu shortcut was there. Uninstall
removed the install directory, the shortcuts and the registry entry. The
SHA-256 of editor-session.json in userData didn't change across install and
uninstall. (window-state.json can change when the launched EXE saves its own
window state. That's expected.) The portable EXE auto-extracted and launched
cleanly in a scratch directory. Source SHA:
2f3591b3c56bee1de5ed38de609f22b11b4f5997.
The Tier-3 capture-server smoke test ran end to end against the installed EXE.
The full event stream came through: ready, capture:start, capture:done,
shutdown:, a graceful exit, leak:check with alive:false, and an empty
survivors list. Details are in docs/CROSS_PLATFORM_BETA.md §9, which also
holds the full cross-platform evidence record.
Known limitations carried over from beta.4 and beta.3
- Unsigned. SmartScreen or Defender may warn on the first Windows launch
(More info → Run anyway). This is by design and won't go away in this
release. Seedocs/SIGNING_READINESS.md. - x64 only. No Linux ARM64, no Windows ARM64, no macOS, and no Snap,
Flatpak or Store package. - Upload is manual. The WRL Forge World Project Bundle is something to
review, then upload yourself through the Cybertown website or the Mall
workflow. WRL Forge doesn't upload anything directly (by design) and doesn't claim to
produce a CTR server format. - No auto-update, telemetry, ads, Microsoft Store packaging or public release.
1.3.0-beta.4: Crash Recovery
Status: Beta · Prerelease · Unsigned. Not a stable release.
This refresh adds crash recovery (Phase Beta 2). If the app exits
abnormally, unsaved work in the native editor isn't lost. On the next launch a
prompt offers Restore or Start Fresh, and nothing is restored or thrown away
until you pick one. Recovery never changes source files on disk. The recovered
text opens as unsaved work, and you decide whether to keep it.
The GitHub release page shows the exact release commit:
https://github.com/DJAscendance/wrlforge/releases/tag/v1.3.0-beta.4
What changed since beta.3
- Crash recovery. A debounced recovery snapshot goes to
userData/editor-recovery.json(schemaVersion 2). It records
sourceStat { mtimeMs, size, sha1 }for the real source bytes, gzip included,
and uses that to detect conflicts. The Mall, Editor and World pages all call
the same sharedWRLForgeRecoveryPrompt.maybePrompton init, once per session
throughsessionStorage. - When the recovery file is cleared. Only a successful Save, an explicit
Discard or an explicit Start Fresh removes it. It stays on disk after a
Restore, a failed Save, a missing source, a renderer reload or an app restart,
so the next launch can offer it again. Independent final re-QA:
PHASE_BETA_2_FINAL_REQA_PASS. - External-change protection for plain and gzip files (B1). If the source
changed on disk afte...

1.3.0-beta.5 — Cross-Platform Beta (Private, Unsigned)
Status: Beta · Prerelease · Unsigned — private candidate. Not a stable
release. Do not distribute publicly.
This is the cross-platform refresh of the 1.3.0-beta series — the same
source built for Linux x64 and native Windows 11 x64, with no new
product features versus 1.3.0-beta.4. The included work since the beta.3 era:
- Phase Beta 2 — Crash Recovery (already in
1.3.0-beta.4): debounced
recovery snapshot underuserData/editor-recovery.json; Restore / Start Fresh
prompt at next launch; source files on disk are NEVER mutated by recovery.
Seedocs/PHASE_BETA_2_CRASH_RECOVERY.md. - Phase: Accessibility + Performance (D1 + D2): keyboard accessibility for
the Mall + World toolbars (toolbar semantics,aria-keyshortcutsonCtrl+R/
Ctrl+E),Ctrl+RRepack +Ctrl+EOpen in Native Editor wired to the same
named actions the buttons use, shortcut suppression in text inputs / modal
backdrops / while the matching button is disabled, role=listsemantics on
the Inspector findings list, single-shot back-focus restoration. The perf gate
is PASS (MEDIAN_GATE, all profile medians under the 250 ms ceiling), and
45.20 MB stable renderer heap over 30 edit/reparse cycles. See
docs/ACCESSIBILITY_PERFORMANCE.md.

authority; the values in the tables above are the pre-publication
independently QA-tested build and may differ from the GitHub Actions
rebuild. All five are unsigned (PE certificate table empty — verified at
build time) and x64 only (no ARM64). No auto-update, no store packaging,
no public release.
Verified lifecycle on Windows 11 (libvirt/QEMU win11 guest at
192.168.122.170, local NTFS C:\Projects\wrlforge, driven headlessly over SSH):
NSIS install → installed exe launches with WRL_FORGE_CAPTURE_SERVER=1 and
emits WRL_FORGE_CAPTURE_READY + WRL_FORGE_CAPTURE_OK → Start-menu shortcut
present → install dir + shortcuts + registry entry removed on uninstall;
userData editor-session.json SHA-256 unchanged across install/uninstall
(window-state.json may change when the launched EXE writes its own window
state — not a regression). Portable EXE launches cleanly via auto-extract in a
scratch directory. Source SHA: 2f3591b3c56bee1de5ed38de609f22b11b4f5997.
Cross-Platform-Beta Tier-3 capture-server smoke against the installed EXE was
emitted end-to-end (full event stream: ready, capture:start, capture:done,
shutdown:,exit graceful, leak:check alive:false, survivors empty) — see
docs/CROSS_PLATFORM_BETA.md §9.
See docs/CROSS_PLATFORM_BETA.md for the full cross-platform evidence record.
Known limitations (inherited from beta.4 + beta.3)
- Unsigned — SmartScreen/Defender may warn on first Windows launch
(More info → Run anyway). Not eliminated by design. See
docs/SIGNING_READINESS.md. - x64 only — no Linux ARM64, no Windows ARM64, no macOS, no Snap/Flatpak/
Store package. - Review + manual upload — the WRL Forge World Project Bundle is a review
artifact you upload through the Cybertown website / Mall workflow by hand.
WRL Forge does no direct upload (by design) and makes no CTR server-format
claim. - No auto-update, telemetry, ads, Microsoft Store packaging, or public release.
1.3.0-beta.4 — Crash Recovery
Status: Beta · Prerelease · Unsigned — not a stable release.
This refresh ships Phase Beta 2 — Crash Recovery so unsaved native-editor
work survives an abnormal exit. A Restore / Start Fresh prompt at next
launch offers the user a deliberate decision before any recovered text
is restored or discarded. Source files on disk are NEVER mutated by
recovery — the recovered buffer opens as unsaved work, and the user
decides whether to keep it.
The exact release commit is shown on the GitHub release page:
https://github.com/DJAscendance/wrlforge/releases/tag/v1.3.0-beta.4
What changed since beta.3
- Phase Beta 2 crash recovery. Debounced recovery snapshot under
userData/editor-recovery.json(schemaVersion 2; carries
sourceStat { mtimeMs, size, sha1 }of the real source bytes as the
conflict anchor — gzip-aware). The three renderer pages (Mall, Editor,
World) all invoke the same sharedWRLForgeRecoveryPrompt.maybePrompt
on init, idempotent per session viasessionStorage. - Recovery lifecycle rule: the recovery file is cleared ONLY by
successful Save / explicit Discard / explicit Start Fresh. Restore,
Save failure, missing source, renderer reload, app restart — all keep
it on disk so the next launch can offer it again. Independent final
re-QA:PHASE_BETA_2_FINAL_REQA_PASS. - B1 plain + gzip external-change protection. Save after Restore
detects a post-snapshot external source change through the existing
EEXTERNALconflict path (no second conflict system). For gzip
sources, the conflict anchor is the sha1 of the gzip bytes, NOT the
decompressed text — the recovery snapshot carries the real disk
identity at snapshot time. - B2 missing-source viewer. When the original source is missing
(or the recovery lacks asourceStatanchor), the renderer shows a
dedicated viewer with the recovered text in a selectable<pre>and
a Copy-to-clipboard action. Recovery stays on disk; the viewer is
non-destructive. - B4 / M1 prompt pages.
recovery-prompt.jsscript tag now loads
BEFOREeditor.jsandworld.jsso the page init can call
WRLForgeRecoveryPrompt.maybePromptimmediately. Deferred scripts
run in document order. - Third-party bundle unchanged: x_ite 15.1.10 (the only runtime
dependency) and CodeMirror 6 (dev-time editor bundle).

This release is still beta, prerelease, unsigned, and x64-only. There is
no auto-update, telemetry, direct Cybertown upload, or automatic
submission.
Known limitations
- Beta limits inherited from beta.3: unsigned (SmartScreen prompt on
Windows); x64 only (no ARM64); no auto-update; not server-certified
for direct Cybertown upload. - Phase Beta 2 accepted limit: the renderer throttles dirty-buffer
recovery pings at 1.5 s and main debounces at 5 s. In the 0–1.5 s
window after a keystroke, the latest text can exist only in renderer
memory. A renderer crash in that window may lose those characters.
Crash survives — the user is still offered Restore on the next
launch (possibly without the last typing burst). - Phase 7D0 deferred: no automatic last-Mall-item restore, no
automatic last-World-Project restore. Mall and World pages open
empty after a fresh launch.

WRL Forge 1.3.0-beta.3 — Public Beta Update
WRL Forge 1.3.0-beta.3
This is a small maintenance update for the public beta. It makes WRL Forge work
properly when you open a .wrl or .wrz from the Linux desktop, a file manager,
or the command line.
What changed
- WRL Forge now appears as an Open With choice for VRML files on Linux.
- Opening a file can start WRL Forge or pass the file to the copy that is already
running. - Startup and later file-open requests are handled in order, so an older request
cannot replace the file you opened most recently. - Extracted Linux builds include a per-user shortcut installer and the approved
cyan SVG icon. The installer discovers the app's location and does not contain
a hardcoded home directory. - The source launcher now forwards file arguments correctly.
- File URL handling is consistent across Linux and Windows.
- Public package metadata points to wrlforge.com.
Files opened from the desktop enter the Mall Item lane. World Projects still
open through their own workspace because WRL Forge needs the project root to scan
and authorize dependencies. The Linux helper adds WRL Forge as an option; it does
not take over as your default VRML application.

1.3.0-beta.2 — First Public Beta
Status: Beta · Prerelease · Unsigned — not a stable release.
The first public beta of WRL Forge. (The earlier 1.3.0-beta.1 was a
private beta.) The exact release commit and tag v1.3.0-beta.2 are shown
on the GitHub release page (which displays the tagged commit SHA):
https://github.com/DJAscendance/wrlforge/releases/tag/v1.3.0-beta.2
Highlights
- Native editor (CodeMirror 6): syntax highlighting, document outline, live
syntax diagnostics + advisories, line/column position, five themes
including High Contrast, and zoom (Ctrl+/-/0). - Backups and conflict handling: saves are backup-first (a timestamped
backup is written before the source is replaced), and WRL Forge detects
external changes to a file so you don't silently clobber edits made outside
the app. - Unsaved live preview (X_ITE) for both the Mall and World lanes: a split
view of your in-memory editor buffer with no temp file, ~700 ms debounce.
It keeps the last valid scene during a temporary syntax error and recovers
when you fix it. - Mall Item inspection with Cybertown placement preview: Original mode
and Fit mode, with placement guides and scale info. Preview transforms
never modify your source. - World Project lane: scans a multi-file world (nested Inline files,
textures), reports missing / unsafe / case-mismatched assets, gives an
embedded X_ITE world preview with a viewpoint selector, navigation
mode, and reset view, and lets you edit a nested WRL with a full-world
preview via an unsaved nested override. - Nested WRL support and plain + gzip-compressed
.wrlfiles, opened
transparently. - World Project Bundle: builds a portable ZIP for manual review and
hand-off (deterministic in-repo ZIP writer). You upload it by hand through the
Cybertown website — it is review + manual handoff only, not a direct upload
and not a server-certified format. - Optional VSCodium / VS Code integration, launched only by an explicit
external-editor action (ordinary file opening never launches it). - New cyan WRL Forge app icon.

Known limitations
- Unsigned Windows builds → SmartScreen/Defender may warn (More info → Run
anyway). Unsigned by design for this beta; signing would not by itself remove
the warning. - The portable EXE has a documented stdout-handshake limitation that
affects automated visual capture only, not normal use. - Historical nonstandard VRML extensions may not behave identically to the
original platform. - Parser advisories are advisory-only; the X_ITE runtime is authoritative
for what actually renders. - x64-only public beta (no ARM64, no macOS).
- No direct upload — the World Project Bundle is a manual hand-off package.
- No telemetry, analytics, ads, auto-update, code signing, or crash upload.
