NFS Underground VR — first public preview

Native VR port of the original Xbox USA version of Need for Speed: Underground (2003), for Meta Quest 3 standalone and experimental Windows x64 PCVR.

No original game content is included. You must supply your own compatible Xbox disc dump. The APK and ZIP contain the port, supporting libraries and custom cockpit/hand assets; they contain no original executable, disc image, cars, tracks, textures, audio, movies or saves.

Download and install

  • Quest 3: Download NFSU-VR-Quest3-v0.3.0-preview.1.apk, install through SideQuest or ADB, then select your supported ISO/XISO/ZIP/7z in the app's importer.
  • Windows PCVR: Download and extract the entire NFSU-VR-PCVR-Windows-x64-v0.3.0-preview.1.zip, connect your OpenXR headset and run Start-PCVR.cmd. The Windows importer accepts ISO/XISO; unpack compressed archives first.
  • Detailed English installation guide covers developer mode, sideloading, data transfer, storage requirements, import, controls, updates, saves and troubleshooting.

Supported data: original Xbox USA/NTSC-U Underground 1, title ID 45410047; default.xbe SHA-256 f4b3dc578fa38abb59961c0c1c692f28514b2ca8bfbd43854c726a1636b34b22. Other platforms, PAL releases, Underground 2 and modified executables are unsupported.

Included in this preview

  • OpenXR stereo, head tracking, multiview rendering and fixed foveation.
  • Touch driving and one/two-hand virtual-wheel steering.
  • Fitted shared cockpit, custom hands, rear-view mirrors, dashboard instruments and center-console minimap.
  • Pause-menu VR Settings for sensitivity, wheel rotation, seat position and resolution.
  • Cockpit remains visible while paused, seat adjustments preview immediately, and mirrors recover correctly after pause/resume.
  • Quest performance improvements, wheel deadzone compensation, mirror stripe correction and improved instrument/map placement.
  • Local game-data import and validation, with existing saves preserved on reimport.

Validation and limitations

Quest 3 gameplay and the latest cockpit, mirror and pause/seat-preview fixes have been confirmed on the headset. Windows builds, automated tests and desktop rendering have been checked; an actual NFSU1 PCVR headset session has not yet been validated.

Release checks passed: 32 Quest importer tests, 43 Windows importer assertions, 62 title/camera checks, cockpit/settings checks and a Vulkan stereo test with 768 verified pixels. Packages were inspected using explicit runtime-file lists, APK asset/library allowlists, and retail file path/hash checks. The APK signature was verified.

This is a preview. Stable 72 FPS, all cars and race modes, extended audio/input validation and full applicable NFSU2 VR feature parity remain in progress. See the feature and validation matrix. The shared interior is a fitted prototype rather than an authentic individual interior for each car. Start at 1680 × 1760 per eye on Quest 3; lower the resolution if needed.

The APK uses the existing development signing key. In-place updates require the same key. Uninstalling or clearing app data deletes imported files, saves and settings; back up before changing installations.

SHA256SUMS.txt verifies both downloads and release-manifest.json. The manifest identifies the exact source commit and lists package entries with hashes. Source, build scripts, attribution and dependency notices are included in the repository and packages.
