Downloads always land in the folder you chose. A row remembers the destination it was added with; if that folder no longer exists when the download runs, TuberX now uses your current destination instead of failing or writing somewhere stale. Trim clips and split parts continue to be written next to their source file.

Development and test instances can no longer touch an installed copy's settings. The app's data folder is now fixed before any settings store opens. This closes a fault that let test runs on the developer's machine change the installed app's download destination; no installed copy in the wild was affected by anything other than its own user.

Also: the pre-release download gate now sets the real "skip if already downloaded" setting.

Select and remove, everywhere. Click, Cmd/Ctrl-click and Cmd/Ctrl+A select rows in the download list, in History and in Download Later. Delete or Backspace removes the selection (the Mac delete key now works; it never did before), a "Remove selected (N)" button appears while anything is selected, and right-clicking inside a selection removes the whole selection. "Clear finished" drops every completed row from the list in one click. Files on disk are never touched by any of these; "Clear history" stays as the everything option.

Trim works even when the preview can't. Very high resolution or HDR files may not decode in the preview player on machines without hardware decoding. The trim dialog now reads the file's duration itself, so Set in/out, chapter presets and Export are available immediately, and it tells you plainly when the preview is the only thing that isn't working. Each trim session is written to the engine log.

Security update: Electron 44. TuberX moves from Electron 38 to Electron 44.2.0 (Chromium 152, Node 24), which closes every open advisory GitHub listed against the app, among them a cross-origin read through custom protocols, a context-isolation bypass and a shell.openPath path check bypass. Electron 38 and 39 are no longer maintained, so this also puts the app back on a line that receives fixes until March 2027. No features change.

Two things had to be adapted for the new runtime and are verified: clipboard paste (the clipboard API became asynchronous) and the trim preview, whose local media stream now satisfies Chromium's stricter rules for custom URL schemes.

Also new: a security policy (SECURITY.md) with private vulnerability reporting, Dependabot and CodeQL enabled on the repository.

Requirements: macOS 13 or newer on Apple silicon (Electron 44 dropped macOS 12); Windows 10/11 x64 as before.

4K is offered as 4K on ultra-wide videos. On cinematic 2.39:1 videos YouTube's 4K stream is 3840×1608, and the picker used to group qualities by pixel height alone, so that stream was labelled "1440p" and the real 1440p rung sat underneath it. Qualities now follow YouTube's own rung names, or the long side of the frame when a site gives none, so 3840 wide is 4K whatever the aspect ratio and a portrait Short stays 1080p. Each rung also downloads its own stream: picking 1080p on such a video gives the 1920×804 file, not the 2560×1072 one.

Clearer failures. A fetch that dies without a message from the site now says so instead of "unknown error", and every failed fetch is written to the engine log.

Fixes a regression in 0.3.2: 4K, 8K and HDR downloads were being re-encoded. 0.3.2 added a rule to encode video codecs that MP4 cannot carry, and its list left out VP9 and AV1, the codecs YouTube uses for everything above 1080p and for HDR. Every such download got a full H.264 conversion it never needed, which is why finishing became slow. 0.3.3 copies VP9 and AV1 straight into the MP4 again, exactly as 0.3.1 did. Only VP8 and Theora sources (WebM-only sites) are encoded. An unrecognised codec is copied, never converted on a guess.

Also in this build: a release gate now runs twelve end-to-end downloads before any publish, including a YouTube pick above 1080p that must finish as a copy.

Update notifications you can rely on. TuberX checks for a new build 15 seconds after it opens and then every hour by default; Settings → About lets you choose every six hours, daily, launch only, or never, and the new schedule applies immediately. A new version now raises a message in the app with a "Get the update" button that stays until you act on it, marks the Settings icon, and is written to the engine log. The check also runs when your machine wakes from sleep.

Two engine fixes found by downloading through the app from 30 different sites, one yt-dlp test link each.

Audio outputs now run on the parallel engine. MP3, M4A, WAV and M4R take the same route as video: the audio stream and the cover art arrive together and a single ffmpeg pass extracts, tags, adds chapters and embeds the artwork. Audio from video-only sites (tumblr, Dailymotion, 9gag …) used to fail at the cover step ("ffprobe not found"); it now completes with the cover inside. M4A copies AAC sources untouched, MP3 encodes at your chosen bitrate, WAV is 16-bit PCM, M4R is a 40-second AAC ringtone.

WebM-only sites produce a real MP4. Sources served only as VP8/VP9 with Vorbis or Opus (9gag and others) used to fail twice: the finishing pass attached a cover to a WebM, then the remux to MP4 rejected VP8. The finishing pass now encodes such sources to H.264/AAC (on the GPU where one exists) and only ever attaches cover art to MP4. A 9gag clip finishes in under three seconds.

Silent videos are offered as video. A source whose formats report a height but no codec (archive.org, generic pages) is treated as video and defaults to Best, instead of offering an audio extraction that has nothing to extract.

Verified on: 9gag, tumblr, Dailymotion, SoundCloud, YouTube (MP3 with chapters, WAV, M4R, 360p pick, subtitles), archive.org, Imgur. The engine ships yt-dlp 2026.08.19 and matches upstream's supported-sites list extractor for extractor.

TuberX 0.3.1: the engine, measured and rebuilt

A report that downloads and finishing were slow led to a measurement of every stage with the app's exact flags on a 245 MB 1080p60 video: 53 seconds in total. The video moved in 31 s, then the 10 MB audio track alone took 11 s afterwards (YouTube caps each connection, and yt-dlp fetches tracks one after another), 6 s went to thumbnail and subtitle fetches before any media started, and the finished file was written three separate times at the end.

Parallel engine

Video, audio, subtitles and cover now download at the same time, each through aria2c, and a single ffmpeg pass writes the finished file once with tags, chapters, subtitles and cover inside. A forced codec is applied in that same pass instead of a second rewrite. Same video, same connection: 23 seconds. Pause, resume, stall restarts, keep-both naming and the classic pipeline as an automatic fallback all carry over. Settings → Downloads has the switch.

PO-token helper on demand

Generating YouTube's proof-of-origin token costs 10 to 60 seconds per run, and the helper regenerated it for every fetch and every download on networks that reach Google's endpoint. It now engages only when YouTube actually asks for a sign-in check, as a retry. Settings → Network offers When needed (default), Always, Off.

Timings in the log

Every job ends with a line like fast: done in 23.1s: select 0.4s, streams 22.3s (299+140, aria2), finish 0.3s, move 0s in engine.log, so a slow machine names its slow step.

Update check

TuberX now asks GitHub Releases for a new version at launch and every six hours, and shows it: a dot on the Settings icon, a badge and a button under Settings → About, and a one-time notice. The Windows installer build downloads and applies the update in place; the portable exe and the Mac build open the release page for the new file. Nothing installs without you, and Settings → About has a manual Check for updates and a switch for the automatic check.
