OpenWrite 1.0.2
OpenWrite 1.0.2 release notes
7 October 2026
Please update from 1.0.1. DOCX and ODT files saved by OpenWrite 1.0.1
on the Amiga are corrupt and cannot be opened again. 1.0.2 saves them
correctly. Files saved by 1.0 and 1.0.1 on the x86 or ARM64 cores (OWConvert there) are not affected, and nothing in the file formats changed.
The other fixes come from loading a real design document (Word for Mac,
17 tables, a cover picture, a footer) on AmigaOS 3.2.3 and comparing what
OpenWrite kept, drew and exported with the original.
Fixed
- Saved DOCX and ODT files were corrupt on the Amiga. The compiler
used for the Amiga build got part of zlib's compression wrong at the
optimisation it was built with, so every compressed file OpenWrite wrote
there was damaged. That part of zlib is now built so it is right; a test
on the Amiga compresses and reads back data of every kind, and OpenWrite
reopens the DOCX and ODT files it saves. - Find selected the match but left the page where it was. It now turns
to the match's page and scrolls it into view. - Table and rule lines were drawn green on true-colour screens; they are
in the document's colours. - Shading and borders: paragraph shading, paragraph borders and table
cell shading were lost. They are kept when reading and writing DOCX and
ODT, and shown in HTML. - PDF export:
- spaces between differently formatted words were lost ("Purposeand");
each line is now one piece of text, with even word spacing on
justified lines; - only a header's or footer's first paragraph was written; now all of it;
- table cells sit side by side in their rows;
- pictures were left out; JPEG and PNG pictures are now included, with
their transparency. Pictures in other formats are still left out, and
the export says so.
- spaces between differently formatted words were lost ("Purposeand");
- HTML export left out tables and pictures; they are written now, with
cell shading, and the pictures are embedded in the page.
Release validation
- native core/editor and spelling tests, with new tests for shading,
borders, cells and pictures in DOCX, ODT, HTML and PDF; - 3,206 corrupt/cut-short format cases;
- m68k AmigaOS cross-build with Chromium's zlib 1.3.1;
- on AmigaOS 3.2.3 (an AmigaChrome instance with OpenRTG): the design document opened and searched (five searches, each shown on its page); its DOCX, ODT, PDF and HTML saved on the Amiga and checked on x86 cores; the saved DOCX reopened on the Amiga.
Known limits
- Table columns are all one width and rows are taller than their text;
tab stops are not used. These come with the new layout engine. - Lists are kept as text with their bullets, not as lists.
- At 100% wide pages run past the window's edge; Fit Width shows them.
- The layout still estimates line widths, so page breaks can come earlier
than in Word, and text does not wrap round floating pictures.
OpenWrite 1.0.1
OpenWrite 1.0.1 release notes
7 October 2026
OpenWrite 1.0.1 fixes what showed when Word and ONLYOFFICE documents were
opened in 1.0 on AmigaOS 3.2.3. Nothing in the file formats changed; 1.0's
notes (RELEASE_NOTES_1.0.md) still describe what OpenWrite does.
Fixed
- Bullets and other characters outside Latin-1 were drawn as UTF-8
bytes (three wrong glyphs for a bullet). Text is now drawn and measured in
the Amiga's ISO-8859-1: bullets as a middle dot; quotes, dashes, the
ellipsis and special spaces as their nearest Latin-1 forms. The bullet-list
button shows a dot too. - Tables: each cell sat a line below the cell to its left. A row's cells
now share a line, a cell with several paragraphs stacks them inside the
cell, and every cell draws the row's height, so the row's lines meet. - Blank lines where the layout's estimate expected a line to wrap: a
paragraph now follows what was drawn before it, with its own spacing, and
tables and pictures follow the text above them. Nothing is drawn over
anything else. - Text colours (a coloured heading) were drawn in the theme's text
colour; they now show. - Small type lost full stops and spaces ("AmigaOS 32", "PC,saved"):
outline fonts such as CGTimes were asked for at a designed size, which
returned one ready-made 10-pixel size for everything from 8 to 14 pixels.
Outline fonts are now made at the exact size asked for; bitmap fonts keep
their designed sizes. - Pictures with transparency (a PNG logo) showed black where they are
see-through; they are now blended onto the paper. - Text over a picture: text after a picture is now placed below it.
Floating pictures are placed in their paragraph; text does not flow round
them yet. - Saved ODT and DOCX files named their generator as version 0.1; they now
say 1.0.1.
Release validation
- native core/editor and spelling tests;
- core and spelling AddressSanitizer/UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer runs;
- 3,205 corrupt/cut-short format cases;
- m68k AmigaOS cross-build with Chromium's zlib 1.3.1;
- on AmigaOS 3.2.3 (an AmigaChrome instance with OpenRTG and the Open look),
installed by OpenUp's OpenWrite part: a DOCX written for the test, two
Microsoft Word for Mac documents (16 and 28 pages) and an ONLYOFFICE
document (30 pages) opened and drawn, and each converted by OWConvert on
the Amiga.
Known limits
- The layout still estimates line widths to place paragraphs and page
breaks, so page breaks can come earlier than in Word. - Text does not wrap round floating pictures.
- Characters outside Latin-1 with no near equivalent are drawn as
?.

plain-text import; - character and paragraph formatting, styles, lists and page setup;

- searchable PDF export and standard printer.device output;
- ARexx port for scripted document/open/save/export/print/text/search commands;
- C:OWConvert for scripted conversion on any 68000.
Release validation
The 1.0 candidate passed:
- native core/editor tests;
- spelling tests;
- core and spelling AddressSanitizer/UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer runs;
- 3,206 corrupt/cut-short format cases under the normal and sanitizer gates;
- m68k AmigaOS cross-build with zlib;
- AmigaOS 3.2.3 + OpenRTG/OpenLook SpeedLab smoke using the release binary and
a multi-page document, with no release-blocking alert/fault reported.
Release binary sizes at qualification:
- OpenWrite: approximately 302 KiB;
- OWConvert: approximately 162 KiB.
Known 1.0 boundaries
OpenWrite 1.0 intentionally does not claim full desktop-publishing layout.
- simple tables are supported; merged/nested/advanced Office tables may be
approximated; - images are inline; floating/wrapped images are post-1.0 work;
- advanced section layout, multi-column sections, footnotes/endnotes and
generated TOCs remain post-1.0; - Word 97-2003
.doc, RTF, Markdown and AmigaGuide import are not 1.0 filters; - tracked changes are accepted on DOCX import rather than edited as revision
objects; - unsupported advanced Office objects are reported rather than silently
claimed as editable; - printer.device output is the standard system print path; a fully unified
graphics/WYSIWYG print-display pipeline remains later work; - grammar checking is not included.
