@Daveofthecave Daveofthecave released this 17 Sep 00:41

MRF is a GPU-accelerated CLI tool that finds massive mountainous megaregions in Minecraft 1.18-1.21.3. It harnesses the power of parallel processing by running custom CUDA kernels on Nvidia GPUs to search up to 20 million seeds per second within a ±16,000-block square centered on the world origin. MRF's pipeline pre-filters seeds based on their climate noisemaps (eg. Erosion, Continentalness); only the few seeds that pass this first stage move on to the slower stages, with biome checks, flood fill, and a custom-calibrated seed scoring system. This cheap-first, costly-last filtering system is what enables MRF to traverse millions of seeds per second. For more info, check out the README.

System Requirements

OS Linux or Windows
GPU Nvidia GPU required (no CUDA Toolkit needed). Tested on RTX 30xx and 40xx; RTX 50xx works after a one-time first-launch translation (automatic; takes a minute or two); RTX 20xx and GTX 16xx work if built manually.
GPU Driver Any recent version works
VRAM 1.5 GiB minimum, 2.5 GiB for full speed
CPU Multi-core
Note

Windows may greet the .exe with a SmartScreen warning, since the binary isn't code-signed. It's built from the exact source in this repository, so you can click "More info", then "Run anyway". Or, you can always build it yourself.

Verify Your Download

If you'd like to check your downloaded executable against the uploaded one to make sure it hasn't been tampered with, download SHA256SUMS.txt into the same directory, and run these commands from that directory:

  • Linux (terminal):
    sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS.txt
  • Windows (PowerShell):
    (Get-FileHash .\mountain_rangefinder.exe).Hash

If the hashes match, then you're good to go. For a more detailed guide, see How to verify the checksum.

For reference, here are the hashes to compare against:

For a full quick start guide, example commands, manual building instructions, frequently asked questions, and a detailed explanation of how MRF works (animations included!), be sure to check out the project's README.

Changes In This Version

  • Fixed a race condition in gpu.cu where threads were concurrently reading and writing to the same s_dilate buffer in the morphological closing erode section, leading to undefined behavior. Thanks to @CactusDuper from the Minecraft@Home Discord server for pointing this out!
  • Tidied up stale comments in the source code
