GeoSkylines, or its fork, now supports importing higher-resolution tree cover from raster and vector data. This is done by converting the tree cover data to trees.xml via the console app ImageToTreesXML or with the QGIS Python script VectorToTreesXML, which generates the position of trees densely in the play-area section, and sparsely (with a distance-based weight from the play-area) in the non-play section.
Besides the higher resolution, the main advantage of this method via GeoSkylinesImport.ImportTreesXML() is the ability to create in-game trees based on the composition (the types of trees in the forests) described in the tree cover.
This means we can accurately recreate a forest from ex, a vector tree layer if the layer describes the composition - composition IDs of the forests in percentages:

Or we can manually create a high-resolution tree raster cover, by filling in specific colors - composition colors, in pixels where trees of a certain type are:

In both cases, a composition can have one or more (random) of the tree (TreeInfo) prefabs. To learn how to set it up, read the Word document.
