SnapDown 0.6.0 — works on any Mac, nothing to install

@Dev-Muhammad-Junaid Dev-Muhammad-Junaid released this 12 Oct 14:22

SnapDown now works on any Mac straight out of the box. Until this release it quietly relied on yt-dlp and gallery-dl being installed with Homebrew, so on a Mac without them every download failed. Everything it needs now ships inside the app, and it keeps its downloader current by itself.

Nothing to install

  • yt-dlp, gallery-dl, ffmpeg and ffprobe are built in. Settings → System Health shows where each one comes from.
  • yt-dlp updates itself. Sites change faster than apps are released, so SnapDown checks for a new yt-dlp once a day, verifies it against the official checksums, and only switches over once the new one runs. If a site breaks today, System Health → Update fetches the fix straight away.
  • YouTube without extra tools. YouTube needs a JavaScript runtime to answer its checks; SnapDown uses the one built into the app instead of asking you to install deno.
  • A new ffmpeg. The previous one described itself as "not legally redistributable". It's replaced by FFmpeg 9.0.2 under the GPL, with its license and source alongside. Settings → Open-source software lists everything the app ships.

Profiles, channels and playlists

  • Instagram profiles, including whole carousels and image posts.
  • Choose how many. Pasting a profile, channel or playlist shows how many it found. Download the last 5, all of them, or type any number, and load more when there are more. "Always" remembers your choice.
  • Sets stay together in the queue as one card with a thumbnail strip. Clicking a thumbnail glides to that item.
  • Captions become titles for Instagram posts. Posts without one are numbered: "Video by natgeo #12".

The library knows what a post said

  • Caption, creator, collaborators, post date, likes, views and soundtrack are kept with each download, shown in the info panel, and searchable.
  • Filters per platform. Pick a platform to get the filters its posts can use (creator, hashtag, soundtrack, posted within) and sorts by post date, likes and views, which group by the day it was posted.

Editor

  • One project across trim, crop and captions, with a single export for every edit.
  • Word-synced captions and motion templates, on a new timeline. Captions already in the picture aren't burned in twice.
  • Image and audio editors work the same way as the video editor.

Also

  • Transcripts don't invent speech. Music and silence are marked "no speech" instead of being filled with words Whisper made up. Profiles can transcribe every download automatically.
  • Cancelling a download removes its partial files. Cancelling a paused download used to leave it frozen; it now stops.
  • Vertical videos match their quality profile. Resolution is measured on the short side, so a 1080p profile accepts a 1080×1920 reel.
  • Cookies come from the browser profile that's signed in, and the Full Disk Access prompt names the app that needs it.

Updates now come from SnapDown-releases. This version moves you over, and nothing changes on your side.
