OpenTrickyNX Builder: build without typing commands
OpenTrickyNX Builder: build without typing commands
This release adds a window that does the whole Windows build for you. Download Source code (zip) below, extract it to a short folder such as C:\OpenTrickyNX, and double-click OpenTrickyNX Builder.bat.
The window takes you through four steps, one button each:
- Install the tools (once). It downloads and sets up everything the build needs: MSYS2 with Python, WSL and Docker Desktop, the Switch compiler and the Vulkan driver files. Windows asks for permission twice, and you restart once after Docker is installed.
- Your game. Pick the
.isoof your own SSX Tricky (USA) Xbox disc, and choose Vulkan (recommended) or OpenGL. - Build. It builds
SSX Tricky.nro, showing each step as it goes. It adjusts to your PC's memory so the build doesn't stall. The first build takes 20 to 40 minutes; later ones only redo what changed. - Copy to the SD card. Pick the card's drive. It copies the game and its settings file, and unpacks your disc's files straight into
switch/opentricky/game, so you no longer need extract-xiso.
An optional part makes the home-menu icon (.nsp) from your prod.keys and any picture.
New to this? [docs/windows-guide.md](https://github.com/DevCrashDay/OpenTrickyNX/blob/main/docs/windows-guide.md) walks through every step, says where each file goes, and covers what to do when something goes wrong.
Also new
- The README is updated for this release: Vulkan tested at about 60 fps in races, the PowerShell build steps, settings and known issues.
- The Vulkan driver files (Mesa NVK, MIT licensed) are now a normal download on the [nvk-sdk release](https://github.com/DevCrashDay/OpenTrickyNX/releases/tag/nvk-sdk), with no GitHub login needed.
extract_iso.py --allcopies a whole disc image, checking that there is enough free space first.
As before
You need your own SSX Tricky (USA) Xbox disc. This release is source only: no game files, translated code or built .nro are included. What you build contains code from your copy of the game, so keep it to yourself.
Please report problems in [Issues](https://github.com/DevCrashDay/OpenTrickyNX/issues), with the log from build\windows\ (for building) or SSX Tricky.log from the SD card (for the game).
SSX Tricky Switch Edition 0.1.0 (first playable release)
First release of OpenTrickyNX: SSX Tricky on the Nintendo Switch as native homebrew, built from your own disc.
What works
- Boots, menus, sound and races on Switch hardware.
- Races hold about 60 fps with the default speed options (the game's x86 registers live in CPU registers; indirect calls skip the thread pointer).
- OpenGL renderer by default; an optional Vulkan renderer (NVK) is used in this .nro release 0.1.0.
- A second controller is player 2.
-and+open the Controllers screen. - Optional in-game frame counter (
XBOX_SHOW_FPS=1inSSX Tricky env.txt). - Settings in
SSX Tricky env.txtandsettings.inibeside the.nro.
Build
Windows (PowerShell), with MSYS2 and Docker Desktop running:
.\build_switch.bat "C:\path\to\SSX Tricky (USA).iso"
Linux / macOS: ./build_switch.sh "path/to/SSX Tricky (USA).iso"
For the Vulkan renderer, set VULKAN=1 and NVK_SDK first. SWITCH_JOBS=2 helps when Docker runs short of memory. The full steps, install and settings are in docs/switch.md.
Copy dist/switch/opentricky/ to sdmc:/switch/ and start it from the Homebrew Menu opened over a game (hold R).
Known issues
- Experimental: not played through end to end yet.
- Four-player split screen is in the works. Two-player needs more testing but is working.
- Post-processing, SMAA and soft shadows are off on the Switch.
Mesa NVK SDK (Vulkan driver files)
Mesa NVK for the Switch (MIT licence), for building the Vulkan renderer: unzip it and set NVK_SDK to its portlibs/switch folder. The Windows builder downloads it for you. Built from: https://github.com/danfromtico/mesa-switch.git 0ff52079ca9e9e837ed27eb95a8d239f439a1864. No game code is in it.
