Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Welcome to the NetToggle FAQ. If you are experiencing issues or have questions about how the app works, you will likely find the answer here.
Q: Why does NetToggle require Root or Shizuku?
A: Changing the preferred network type (like forcing 5G/4G Only) requires elevated system-level permissions (MODIFY_PHONE_STATE). Standard Android apps cannot hold this permission. NetToggle uses Root or Shizuku to securely communicate directly with the Android telephony framework to bypass this restriction.
Q: Why does NetToggle require the "Read Phone State" permission?
A: This is an optional permission used strictly for performance. By granting "Read Phone State", NetToggle can use fast, native Android APIs (SubscriptionManager) to instantly detect your active SIM card and network capabilities. Without it, the app must fall back to slower background shell commands (dumpsys), which can introduce lag when tapping the Quick Settings tile.
Q: Why does NetToggle require the "Run at startup" (Receive Boot Completed) permission? A: NetToggle does not run persistent background services that drain your battery. It only uses the startup permission for a split-second when you turn on your phone to clear stale Quick Settings tile data. This ensures that the tile accurately fetches the true network state from the system, rather than displaying incorrect, cached data from before the reboot.
Q: I selected "Root", but my device didn't ask for permission and the app isn't working. A: Modern root managers (like KernelSU, APatch, and sometimes Magisk) no longer automatically prompt you when an app requests root access in the background. You must open your root manager app, go to the Superuser/Permissions tab, find NetToggle, and manually toggle the switch to grant access.
Q: Shizuku is running, but NetToggle says "Permission Denied" or "Shizuku Unavailable". A: Ensure that you have actually allowed NetToggle within the Shizuku app. Open Shizuku, tap on "Authorized applications", and ensure the toggle next to NetToggle is turned on. If you recently rebooted your phone, you must start the Shizuku service again before the tile will work.
Q: What is the exact difference between "4G Only" (LTE only) and "Preferred 4G"?
-
4G Only (
LTE only): Locks the modem strictly to a 4G connection. If you lose 4G signal, your phone will drop service completely rather than switching to 3G or 2G. - Preferred 4G: Tells the modem to prioritize 4G LTE, but authorizes it to seamlessly fall back to 3G or 2G if the 4G signal is weak, keeping you connected.
Q: Why can't I make or receive phone calls when using "4G Only" or "5G Only"? A: When you lock your device to 4G or 5G only, you disable the ability for the phone to fall back to legacy 3G/2G networks for voice calls. To make calls on 4G/5G, your carrier and device must support and have VoLTE (Voice over LTE) or VoNR (Voice over NR) actively provisioned and enabled. If calls are dropping, switch back to a "Preferred" mode.
Q: Why isn't there a "Preferred 2G" option? A: At the hardware level, Android modems do not support a "Preferred 2G" state that falls back upward to 3G or 4G. Modems naturally camp on the highest available generation. To restrict your phone to 2G, you must use the 2G Only mode.
Q: Why are some modes (like "5G Only" or "2G Only") disabled or greyed out in the app? A: NetToggle dynamically checks your device hardware and current carrier configuration. If your phone's hardware does not support 5G, or if your carrier has permanently shut down their 2G/3G networks (e.g., US Carriers, Jio India, Telstra Australia), the app automatically disables those options to prevent you from selecting a mode that would result in a total loss of service.
Q: Does NetToggle support Dual SIM devices? A: Yes! By default, the app is set to Auto, which dynamically detects your active data SIM and applies the network change to it (this includes zero-battery SIM-swap detection). You can also manually force changes to SIM 1 or SIM 2 via the Target SIM card in the app.
Q: Is this app safe for AMOLED screens in Dark Mode?
A: Yes. As of our Material 3 overhaul, the dark theme utilizes a pure black (#000000) background to maximize battery efficiency and prevent burn-in on OLED/AMOLED displays.
Q: The Quick Settings Tile isn't updating or doing anything when I tap it. A: Check two things:
- Ensure you have actually selected modes in the Quick Tile Cycle card inside the main app. (If no modes are selected, the tile has nothing to cycle through).
- Ensure your Execution Mode (Root or Shizuku) is active and properly granted.
Q: I tapped a mode in the tile, but it says "Error Check App". What went wrong? A: This means the underlying shell command failed to execute properly. Open the main NetToggle app, and you will see a red "Command Failed" banner. Tap it to view and copy a detailed Diagnostic Report, which you can share with the developer to help fix the issue.
Q: The app says "Auto SIM detection failed", what should I do? A: On some custom ROMs or highly modified manufacturer software, Android cannot accurately report which SIM is actively being used for data. If you see this warning, simply select SIM 1 or SIM 2 manually under the Target SIM card.
Q: I found a bug or have a feature request. Where can I contact the developer? A: You can open an issue here on GitHub, or join our community group on Telegram for faster support and discussions: Join the Project Chat.
