v0.3.14 - Safety & refactors

No functional improvements here, only minor bug fixes, increased safety, and missing best practices.

At time of creating this release, building wheels for MacOS 13 is still pending. Will be updated as soon as they are created.

• refactoring, whitespace changes, unused code removal
• Uninitialized memory could result in wrong remaining time when instantiating
  with paused=True
• Lots of python error checking added
• Some more tests
• docstring fixes
