What's new in 2.7.1

Profit & Loss: drill down by month

  • Click a month name in the Monthly Breakdown to see that month on its own: Income, Expenses and Net Profit, plus breakdowns by customer, category and vendor.
  • Keep clicking to narrow it down, for example March, then Supplies, then one vendor, then the single expense. Each page's total matches the line you clicked.

Back remembers where you were

  • Going back now returns every page to the spot you had scrolled to, instead of the top.

Download ProfitDjinn.exe below and replace your old copy. Your data is not affected.

What's new in 2.7

Settings > Features: two new switches

  • Revenue report: turn off the Revenue page if you don't use it. The dashboard still shows this year's revenue.
  • Service items: turn off Items and the invoice "Quick-add service" list. Saved items are kept and come back when you switch it on.

Both are on by default, so nothing changes unless you turn them off.

Profit & Loss: click any figure to see what makes it up
Click a tile, a month, a total, a category, a vendor, a year, a bar in the chart or a slice of the doughnut. A page opens showing:

  • the figure, exactly as the P&L shows it,
  • how it is worked out (cash or accrual),
  • every payment, invoice or expense behind it. Click a row to open that record.

Download ProfitDjinn.exe below and replace your old copy. Your data is not affected.

Bug fix for 2.6.0-beta.

  • Fixed: opening Work Orders crashed with "InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid" when no customer had open work. It now shows "No open work" as intended.

Nothing else changed. Download ProfitDjinn.exe below and replace your old copy; your data is not affected.

Faster customer and vendor boxes

  • Type part of a customer or vendor name and ProfitDjinn fills in the rest.
  • A new name shows an Add Customer / Add Vendor button. It adds the customer or vendor without leaving the invoice or expense you're working on.

Expenses

  • Cost of revenue: on the Categories page, mark categories such as hosting, domains or processing fees as cost of revenue. The Profit & Loss (and its PDF and CSV) then shows Gross Profit and margin above operating expenses.
  • Who paid: each expense payment is Business, Personal funds (to be paid back), or No cash. The "Owed to You" tile and Mark Paid Back keep track of what the business owes you.
  • Mileage: enter the miles and the amount is miles × your rate (Settings > Expenses).

Bank Accounts (optional, off until you turn it on in Settings > Features)

  • Checking, savings, card and payment-processor (e.g. Stripe) accounts.
  • Owner contributions and draws, fees, transfers and payouts. None of these counts as income or expense.
  • Pending versus cleared, and Reconcile against your statement.
  • Payments can record which account the money went into or came out of.
  • For a processor payout, see the charges and fees it covers.

Also

  • The Recurring Invoices page shows monthly and yearly recurring revenue and active clients.

Download ProfitDjinn.exe below and run it; there's nothing to install. Your data is upgraded automatically, and a backup copy is saved first. Invoicing works exactly as before.

New

  • Settings > Features: switch Work Orders (and Expenses) on or off. Turning one off hides it; nothing is deleted.
  • Service dates on invoice lines: use the calendar button on a line to add optional From/To dates. They print under the description, e.g. "Service: 09/01/26 - 09/30/26". A recurring invoice line can fill in the period each invoice covers automatically.
  • PDF preview: a Preview button on invoices, upcoming invoices and the Profit & Loss shows the PDF in a ProfitDjinn window, with Save PDF and Print. Nothing is saved unless you choose to.
  • Business settings start empty, with example hints instead of sample text you had to delete. Leftover sample values from older versions are cleared; your real details are not touched.

Fixed

  • Editing a recurring invoice with no end date crashed (2.4.0).
  • Spacing and layout fixes across the app:
    • Profit & Loss toolbar.
    • Revenue tiles.
    • Chart heights.
    • Empty-list messages.
    • Detail page headers.
    • Button gaps.
  • Icons in the collapsed sidebar are now centred.

Download ProfitDjinn.exe below and run it; there's nothing to install. Your data is upgraded automatically, and a backup copy is saved first.

Recurring invoices

  • On a customer: Recurring Invoice sets up an invoice that repeats every month or year: its lines, the first date, the day of the month and an optional end date.
  • Created on the date: the next time ProfitDjinn opens, it creates the invoice with the next invoice number. Missed dates each get their own invoice. A first date of today or in the past asks first.
  • Billing period text: {month} and {year} in a line or in the notes are filled in, so "Lawn care - {month} {year}" becomes "Lawn care - November 2026".
  • Upcoming: the Invoices page has an Upcoming section above the full list. Open an upcoming invoice to see it like a normal invoice. Print, PDF or Issue Now send it early, and it keeps its scheduled date. Skip passes on one date.
  • Dashboard: the first tile now shows the invoices due in the next 30 days.

Also

  • A new app icon in every size, so it is sharp in Explorer and on the taskbar.
  • The payment dialog's account-credit notice now wraps instead of being cut off.
  • Icon buttons and links work with screen readers.

Download ProfitDjinn.exe below and run it; no install. Your data is upgraded automatically, and a backup copy is saved first.

ProfitDjinn 2.3.0-beta

Choose a tag to compare

@DjinnRutger DjinnRutger released this 02 Oct 18:00

ProfitDjinn 2.3 makes Settings easier to use and tells you when a new version is out.

Install or update: download ProfitDjinn.exe. To update, close ProfitDjinn, replace the old exe with this one, and start it. Your data is upgraded automatically, and a copy is saved first to %LOCALAPPDATA%\ProfitDjinn\backups\. One 75 MB file with .NET built in, for Windows 10 or 11. SmartScreen may warn because it is not code-signed; choose More info > Run anyway.

What's new:

  • Settings, reorganized. Sections on the left (Business, Invoices, Work Orders, Expenses, Appearance, Security & Lock Screen, Backup, Updates & About), one at a time, with plain labels and hints. Change anything and a bar appears at the bottom with Save Changes and Discard; leaving with unsaved changes asks first. The theme can be picked under Appearance too.
  • Update badge. Once a day ProfitDjinn checks GitHub for a newer version. When there is one, an "Update available" badge appears next to the version number at the bottom of the window; click it to open the release page. Nothing about you or your data is sent. Turn it off, or check now, under Settings > Updates & About.
  • Fixed: switches now respond to the keyboard and to accessibility tools, not only the mouse.

Coming from 2.2 or earlier: this is the version that adds the badge, so download it by hand this once. After that, ProfitDjinn tells you about new versions itself.

ProfitDjinn 2.2.0-beta

Choose a tag to compare

@DjinnRutger DjinnRutger released this 02 Oct 16:52

ProfitDjinn 2.2 adds optional expense tracking and a Profit & Loss report, so a small business can see both sides of its books in one place.

Expenses is off until you turn it on in Settings > Expenses. If you only want invoicing, nothing changes.

What's new:

  • Vendors: who you buy from, with contact details, a default category, and what you've been billed, paid and still owe.
  • Expenses: bills and purchases with due dates, partial payments, Overdue flags, and receipts (PDFs or photos) attached to each one. Mark a new expense as already paid in one step.
  • Recurring expenses: rent, subscriptions and insurance that add themselves every month or year, either already paid or as a bill to pay. A start date in the past asks before filling in the earlier ones.
  • Categories: a starter list based on common small-business tax categories. Rename, add or hide them.
  • Receipts folder: kept in your data folder by default, or choose a OneDrive or network folder in Settings. Receipts are separate files, not inside a database backup; the Backup page shows where they are.
  • Profit & Loss: income, expenses, net profit and margin for any year, month by month, with expenses by category and vendor. Cash basis (money in and out on the day it moved) or accrual (invoice and expense dates). Export to CSV or a one-page PDF for your accountant. The Dashboard shows this year's net profit.

The P&L is a guide, not a tax filing. Check the figures with your accountant.

ProfitDjinn 2.1.0-beta

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@DjinnRutger DjinnRutger released this 02 Oct 15:21

ProfitDjinn 2.1 adds two safety features for your data.

Install or update: download ProfitDjinn.exe. To update, close ProfitDjinn, replace the old exe with this one, and start it. It is one 75 MB file with .NET built in, for Windows 10 or 11. SmartScreen may warn because it is not code-signed; choose More info > Run anyway.

What's new:

  • Automatic backup before every upgrade. When a new version opens your database, it first saves a copy to %LOCALAPPDATA%\ProfitDjinn\backups\ (pre-upgrade_<date>_from-<old>_to-<new>.db). The newest five are kept. If the copy cannot be saved, ProfitDjinn stops and leaves your data untouched. The first start of 2.1 saves one, since earlier versions did not record their version.
  • Backup reminder. On by default, every 7 days: when ProfitDjinn opens, it asks you to save a backup. Choose Back Up Now or Not Now; either way it waits the full interval again, and saving a backup from Backup & Restore also restarts the count. A new install waits the interval before the first reminder. Turn it off or change the number of days in Settings > Backup.

To go back to an earlier copy, open Backup & Restore and restore one of the files in the backups folder.

ProfitDjinn 2.0.0-beta (native Windows app)

Choose a tag to compare

@DjinnRutger DjinnRutger released this 02 Oct 14:44

ProfitDjinn 2.0 is a native Windows app. It is one file with no install, no browser engine and no local web server, and it has the same screens and look as 1.x, in all three themes.

This is a beta. Take a backup in 1.x (Admin > Database) before trying it on real data.

Install: download ProfitDjinn.exe and run it. It is one 75 MB file with .NET built in, for Windows 10 or 11. SmartScreen may warn because it is not code-signed; choose More info > Run anyway.

Your data: 2.0 opens the 1.x database where it already is, %LOCALAPPDATA%\ProfitDjinn\app.db, unchanged. The first start only adds two settings. 1.x can still open the file afterwards, so going back is safe.

What's different from 1.x:

  • Sign-in: there are no users or roles. Instead, an optional app password, under Settings > Security, is asked for at start and by Lock in the sidebar.
  • Admin > Database: reduced to Backup & Restore. Backup uses SQLite's online backup, and a restore keeps a safety copy and puts it back if anything fails.
  • Print and PDF: both use one layout, checked against 1.x's PDF.
  • Fixed:
    • Editing an invoice down below its applied credit no longer strands the credit.
    • Invoice numbers count by value, so JQ999 is followed by JQ1000.
    • A 0-hour line bills as $0.
    • The Item form's Delete button deletes; in 1.x it saved instead.
    • $0 items are allowed.
    • The payment dialog's default date is local.
    • All Years revenue counts unpaid invoices.
    • An invoice keeps its customer when that customer is made inactive.
    • A removed logo stays removed.

Every money rule (totals, payments, credit, work orders, billing roll-ups, dashboard and revenue) is tested against 1.x on the same data, to the last cent. The full list of differences is in docs/port-spec.md.
