@github-actions github-actions released this 07 Oct 20:38

The first public release of Moon Pearl: a native Android port of zelda3, snesrev's complete C reimplementation of ALttP. Bring your own ROM (the US release); the app builds the game data on your device and does not keep the ROM.

Highlights

  • Widescreen up to 2:1, filling the screen, with the map edges kept correct. Optional HUD at the screen edges.
  • Rewind: hold LT+RT on a controller, use the touch button or the in-game menu, and drag through the last minute of play.
  • Image filters: sharp or smooth pixels, CRT, LCD grid, xBR, OmniScale, or your own RetroArch GLSL shaders, switched live from the in-game menu.
  • Save states (9 slots with pictures), chapter select, fast-forward (2×, 3×, max) and resume where you left off.
  • MSU-1 soundtracks, including MSU Deluxe, read straight from the pack's folder.
  • Link's look: any community sprite (.zspr).
  • Touch controls you can move and resize, plus controller support with remapping.
  • Cheats, including Pro Action Replay RAM codes, and the optional enhancements of zelda3.
  • Save management: import and export .srm saves, full backups.
  • English and Brazilian Portuguese. No internet permission.

Changes since 0.6.0

  • The speed used while holding fast-forward (on-screen button, or L3) can be 2×, 3× or max, and L3 can either cycle the speed or fast-forward while held. Both are in the in-game menu and in Settings → Controls.
  • The remap screen says "original" for the original controller's buttons.
  • New app icon: "Moon" by Lorc (game-icons.net, CC BY 3.0) with a pearl.

Installing

Download moonpearl-1.0.0.apk below and open it on your device; Android 8.0 or newer, 64-bit. Tested on a Galaxy S26 Ultra, S25 Edge, Note 20 Ultra and a Blackview Tab 18. It installs over earlier versions and keeps your data. See the README for the ROM, controls and common questions.

All the hard work of reimplementing the game is snesrev's and the zelda3 contributors'; this app brings it to Android.

New

  • New home screen. Continue shows where you left off, with a picture and how long ago. Chapters starts the game at any point of the story. Settings is the gear in the corner. The first launch shows only the ROM step.
  • Rewind, like on Nintendo Switch Online. Hold LT+RT on a controller, use the optional touch button or pick Rewind in the in-game menu. Drag the bar (or hold LT / RT) to go through the last minute of play, then Continue from any point or Cancel. Loading a save state or a chapter starts the history over.
  • Image filters. Sharp or smooth pixels, CRT scanlines, an LCD grid and pixel art smoothing (xBR, OmniScale), or your own RetroArch GLSL shaders (import a folder). The new Image tab in the in-game menu switches them instantly, with the game visible behind. Video output can be OpenGL (all filters) or SDL (the most compatible).
  • HUD at the screen edges (optional, widescreen). The magic meter, item and counters move to the left edge and the hearts to the right.
  • Touch controls layout editor. Move and resize every on-screen button, with undo. Optional fast-forward and rewind buttons.
  • Controller button remapping, with SNES layout and by-letter presets.
  • MSU-1 soundtracks, including MSU Deluxe. Pick the pack's folder; the files are read in place.
  • Link's look. Choose from the community sprites (.zspr), with a preview.
  • Settings reorganized into five categories: Display, Audio, Controls, Game, App.

Changes

  • On a controller, L3 cycles the game speed (1×, 2×, 3×, max). LT and RT stepping the speed is now an option (off by default), since LT+RT rewinds.
  • Save times under a minute read "Just now".

Fixes

  • Sprite colors were wrong after loading a save state with a different Link sprite.
  • If a shader (or the OpenGL output) freezes the game, it is switched off and you are told which one.

Installs over earlier versions and keeps your data.

v0.5.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 06 Oct 16:31

Fixes

  • Widescreen: wrong map columns at the screen edge outdoors. On wide screens, a strip at the left (or right) edge could show part of the map from elsewhere, for example the Tower of Hera over the Death Mountain bridge. The original game loads map columns with scroll counters that drift with how you move; the original 256-pixel view hides that, a wide view does not. The edges are now kept in sync with the map every frame.
  • If the game stops because of an error, the launcher now shows the message instead of closing silently.

New

  • Open source licenses screen in the launcher (zelda3, SDL, Opus, stb, AndroidX/Kotlin).
  • README rewritten for players, with screenshots, controls and common questions.

Installs over earlier versions and keeps your data.

v0.4.0

Moon Pearl

The project has a new name and icon. This is a new app on your device (new package id), so it installs next to the old "Z3" app instead of replacing it. To bring your progress over:

  1. In the old app, open Manage saves → Export backup.
  2. Install Moon Pearl and select your ROM again.
  3. In Moon Pearl, open Manage saves → Restore backup, then uninstall the old app.

Fixes

  • The game is now really paused while the in-game menu is open. Before, it kept running behind the menu on Android 7 and later, so menu buttons could act in the game and a held direction stayed held after closing it.
