Xephyr does not provide the necessary hardware acceleration for applications, so VirtualGL is the only option. There are two ways to do this: granting access to the host's X server (something I want to avoid, as it compromises isolation), or using EGL. I chose EGL.
When using VirtualGL with EGL, the hardware acceleration devices simply need to be visible inside the jail. Everything works as if the application were running on the host, with imperceptible overhead.
