mache 5.0.0 moves Spack builds to Spack 1.x, which breaks existing Spack instances and templates.

  • Spack 1.x: Environments are built with unmodified Spack 1.x instead of the E3SM-Project/spack fork, from three pinned sources: a Spack release, a spack-packages release and the new e3sm-spack-packages overlay.
  • Migration: Downstream packages need a new spack_path and must migrate their Spack templates to the Spack 1.x compiler model. The Intel classic templates are retired.
  • PyPI: mache is now published to PyPI as e3sm-mache.
  • Python: Support for Python 3.10 is dropped.
  • Compute nodes: Deployments now work on compute nodes without outbound ssh.
  • Core ids: The new ParallelSystem.usable_core_ids lists the core ids a job may use on a node.
  • Machines:
    • E3SM-Unified is deployed without Spack on Improv and Bebop.
    • Aurora moves to oneapi 2026.1.0.
    • The Frontier craygnu templates now match cpe/25.09.
    • config_machines.xml is synced with E3SM.
