This major release focuses on the visual language and long-term maintainability of the ELIXIR Toolkit Theme. It refreshes the news, events, navigation, related-page, More information, page metadata, supporter, callout, sidebar, and top navigation experiences, while tightening the upgrade path for sites that pin theme releases.

✨ Highlights

  • News and events have a new visual design, with news rendered as a timeline and events rendered as clearer cards.
  • Navigation and related-page tiles now share one card pattern, with stronger hover and arrow affordances.
  • The More information section has been restyled into clearer collapsible lists with compact source logos.
  • Page metadata now uses the Supported by wording instead of "Affiliations", with backwards compatibility for existing sites.
  • Callouts can now be written directly in Markdown blockquote syntax, including custom titles and nested callouts.
  • Theme UI icons have moved to the Lucide static icon font, while Font Awesome remains available for brands and existing authored content.

🔧 Improvements

  • Added a limit option for news items and documented the equivalent event listing options.
  • Added natural sorting for section navigation tiles, making numbered and mixed-case page titles sort more predictably.
  • Added compact supporter-name hover states and optional type filtering/sorting for supporter overview tiles.
  • Added SVG logo sizing guidance for supporter tiles.
  • Improved resource, training, contributor, page metadata, and badge icon alignment.
  • Polished documentation and example page structures so the demo site better reflects recommended usage.
  • Updated known ELIXIR Toolkit Theme instances with the ELIXIR-GOBLET Train-the-Trainer website.

🐛 Bug fixes and robustness

  • Fixed an unclosed list item in the sidebar include.
  • Fixed mobile top navigation dropdown toggles so the toggle target uses the full available width.
  • Fixed active and hover styling in the top navigation and sidebar.
  • Fixed social icon centering on contributor cards.
  • Removed extra "about" text from training listings.

🚨 Breaking changes 🚨

Sass variables for news and events

The old news/event variables have been renamed:

$news-title-bg
$news-border-color
$news-title-color

Replace them with:

$news-accent-color
$news-timeline-color

Update any custom Sass overrides that still use the old names.

More information Sass variables

The following obsolete More information tile variables have been removed:

$info-card-bg
$info-card-color
$info-card-bg-hover
$info-card-color-hover

These variables no longer affect the current More information styling. Remove them from custom Sass overrides.

FAIRsharing metadata

The deprecated fairsharing-coll key has been removed. Use the fairsharing key with the DOI suffix format instead.

Flag icons

The vendored flag icon assets have been updated to flag-icons 7.5.0. Custom templates or content that use flag classes directly must update from the old flag-icon* naming to the new fi* naming:

The flag SVG files are now organised under assets/flags/4x3/ and assets/flags/1x1/. Theme includes have been updated, but custom overrides should be checked.

Lucide icons

Theme UI icons now use the Lucide static icon font and icon-* classes, for example icon-chevron-right or icon-calendar. Font Awesome remains loaded for brand icons and existing authored content, but custom copied includes or custom CSS that target old Font Awesome UI icons should be reviewed. See the icons documentation for the supported authoring pattern.

⚠️ Deprecated ⚠️

The old "Affiliations" terminology remains backwards compatible in ETT v7, but is deprecated and will be removed in ETT v8.0.0. See the Supported by documentation for the new data file, page metadata, and includes.

Before upgrading to ETT v8, migrate:

  • affiliations page metadata to supported_by.
  • _data/affiliations.yml to _data/supported_by.yml.
  • affiliation-tiles-selection.html to supported-by-tiles-selection.html.
  • affiliations=true to supported_by=true in section navigation includes.
  • affiliations_sort to supported_by_sort in theme configuration.
  • Custom affiliation-* CSS hooks or include overrides to their supported-by-* equivalents.

Contributor-level affiliation fields and schema.org affiliation metadata are unaffected.

🌀 Migration notes

  • Pin the site to 7.0.0 and update the site Gemfile from the 7.0.0 release tag. See Versions and upgrades.
  • Review local copies of theme includes, especially topnav.html, sidebar.html, news.html, events.html, more-information-tiles.html, section-navigation-tiles.html, and page metadata/supporter includes. See Safe customization and overrides.
  • Replace removed or renamed Sass variables in _sass/_custom_variables.scss. See Custom branding.
  • Replace direct flag-icon* usage with fi* classes.
  • Review custom icon usage and copied includes for the Lucide icon-* class change.
  • Replace fairsharing-coll data with fairsharing.
  • Start using Markdown callouts for new content:
