Egle v3.0.0
- Picture Flow can now show your albums as records, CDs or cassettes. You choose in two steps, first the container and then the model, which is eight entries covering twenty four combinations. When the album on screen is the one playing the object comes out of its box: the record slides out of the sleeve and turns, the disc slides out of the jewel case, and the cassette tape really winds from one reel to the other as the song goes on. A Manage views window gives a different look to a single album, to an artist, to a genre or to a range of years, so your seventies records can be vinyl while the nineties are CDs. Picking the default look is free, the rules are a Supporter feature.
- You can now replace the artwork Egle draws in the Picture Flow with your own images. Seventeen parts can be swapped for a PNG or WebP, and every part ships with the drawing Egle uses for it, so you open the file, paint over it and save. Mods live in named folders, so you can keep several, switch between them from a menu, mix them object by object, or share one by sending the folder. A Modding guide button opens a full reference with the standard artwork downloadable from it. Supporter feature.
- Picture Flow feels right now. The row of covers is worked out from the real width of the window instead of missing on one side or the other, scrolling and opening a track list no longer stutter in any look, dragging moves the row album by album exactly like the arrows do, clicking beside a cassette no longer opens the wrong album, and going in and out of full screen is one smooth movement with the mini player staying where it is.
- Artists finally have a face and a story, free on every tier. When a file has no artist picture in its tags Egle looks one up online, so your Artists page shows faces instead of album covers, and names shared by several artists are sorted out by matching your own albums instead of taking the most popular result. Click the photo and you get a biography in your own language, plus type, country, active years and genres. If a photo is still wrong you can pick another from everything found online, and your choice is saved and used everywhere.
- Albums with no cover art no longer sit as grey placeholders. When an album has no picture in its files and no folder image, Egle finds the cover online and shows it in the album grid and on the album page, free on every tier. Supporters also get a Save cover button that writes it into every track at full resolution and saves a folder.jpg, so it shows up on your DAP and in any other player too.
- Lyrics can now come from the web. When a song has no lyrics in its tags and no .lrc file next to it, Egle looks them up online, synced ones included so they scroll in time. You choose the order it searches, and in the Now Playing view a small row of buttons shows where the current lyrics come from and lets you switch source for that song. All of it is free, on every tier.
- A new Discover similar panel shows you music like what you are already playing. It opens from any artist, album or song, tells you what you already own and what you do not, and every suggestion can be explored further in one click so you can keep wandering from one thing to the next. Smart Playlists learned the same trick: an Include similar artists chip adds to your query the similar artists you actually own. It needs your own free Last.fm key and is a Supporter feature.
- The Massive Tag Editor can now hear. A new Identify tracks operation recognises a song from the audio itself and fills in the official MusicBrainz details, so it works on files with no tags at all and on files whose tags are simply wrong. By default it only fills fields that are empty, so it can never damage a library you already curated, and the preview shows you every change file by file before anything is written. A ready recipe called Auto Tagging is waiting in the recipes menu. It needs a free AcoustID key. Supporters only.
- Everything Egle fetches from the internet now sits behind one switch. In Settings, under Library, a master switch turns off every online lookup, and each one below it has its own switch plus a plain line saying what it fetches and from which service. Everything ships turned on, and update checking stays separate under General. Your Last.fm and AcoustID keys are hidden behind dots with an eye button to check what you pasted, and each has a step by step guide behind a link.
- Track lists now have the columns you choose, everywhere. A button on any track table header lets you pick which columns to show and in what order, and your choice applies at once across the whole Library. Two of them are new: Plays counts how many times you played a track in Egle, and Listens shows how many times it has been played worldwide. Both can sort the list, columns can be resized by dragging, and you can have them fill the width or keep a fixed size and scroll sideways.
- The Statistics page has been redesigned. It opens with your listening time for the period in large type, next to how it compares with the period before, your streak and your totals. Top artists became a real podium, the first three large with their photos and clickable, and a Track of the period card highlights your most played song, ready to play with one click.
- Smaller things: big playlists no longer lag, the volume slider no longer jumps around while you drag it, the window title bar is now part of the app, the tops of the Library and of the Massive Tag Editor take one row instead of three, albums starting with an accented letter are no longer filed under #, text that does not fit now scrolls instead of ending in dots, and the translations were reread and corrected in the six languages other than Italian.
Egle v2.0.0
- Smart Playlists: build a playlist from a plain-language query like 90s r&b or most played, fully offline, and save it to your Library or straight onto a Rockbox DAP. Saving onto a DAP is a Supporter feature.
- Playlist transfer Library to DAP: Egle matches the same songs across PC and device even when the paths differ, writes the playlist on the DAP, and can copy over the missing songs too.
- Manage DAP playlists: a new PC / DAP switch on the Playlists page lists, opens, creates, renames and deletes the playlists on your connected device, and the Add to playlist menu can drop a song straight onto a device playlist (copying it across first if it is not there yet). Writing to the DAP is a Supporter feature.
- Any folder layout in the DAP Manager: Auto mode finds albums at any depth, so Artist / Album / file libraries (MusicBee, iTunes, foobar2000, NAS) finally show up, and copies are mirrored on the DAP with the same structure.
- DAP Manager advanced scan: compare tags and audio quality of the files you have on both PC and DAP, see what differs (quality, tags or modified), and re-sync the ones you pick in either direction. Live speed and ETA, smooth with thousands of files, and a clean cancel.
- ReplayGain in the Massive Tag Editor: measure the loudness of each track or the whole album and write the standard ReplayGain tags, so your library plays at an even volume. Both the player and Rockbox read them.
- New Duplicates page: finds songs that appear more than once, even across formats like FLAC and MP3, marks the best copy, and moves the rest to the Recycle Bin, with optional album renumbering afterwards. Finding is free; deleting is a Supporter feature.
- Gapless and crossfade: play albums with no gap between tracks, or blend one track into the next (up to 12 s). Both off by default, in Settings under Player.
- Immersive lyrics view: a Spotify-style Now Playing with the lyrics large on the right and the current line highlighted, click a line to jump. Lyrics can also come from an external .lrc file. Smoother scrolling and transitions.
- Richer browsing pages: artist, genre and year pages now have the full three dots menu, a Play all button, and a grid / track-list toggle. History rows are clickable, and empty genres are gone.
- Consistent back and forward: full screen and library detail pages are now real history steps, so back, forward and Escape move through Picture Flow, Now Playing and album/artist/genre pages as expected. Last session also restores a fullscreen Picture Flow and your scroll position.
- Now Playing controls: the heart and add to playlist buttons sit next to the playback controls, and the cover highlight is a softer glowing frame.
- Live palette preview: press Preview to see Egle recolored with your palette in real time, with a Dark / Light switch and a plain description on every color.
- Crash-safe settings: the settings file can no longer be left half written, and Egle restores from a backup if it is ever found damaged, so a crash during a save no longer resets your preferences.
- Smaller fixes: sidebar reordered (Library, DAP Manager, Massive Tag Editor, EQ Converter, FLAC Checker); the DAP album list refreshes itself after a transfer; Settings opens on the right tool's section; a corrupt file no longer crashes a scan; the startup picker shows DAP Manager properly; and the Add to playlist menu no longer shows an empty strip.
